Jacob 'Jack' Bart

November 10, 1933 - June 10, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Bart on June 10, 2026, surrounded by the loving care of his family.
Jack was a remarkable man whose life was defined by love, compassion, generosity, determination, adventure, and unwavering strength. He continually sought opportunities to help others and was truly a “Jack of all trades,” able and willing to lend a hand wherever it was needed. Through his Christian ministry in Argentina, Spain, and Canada, he made a lasting impact on countless individuals and communities. Jack was deeply loved by his parishioners, friends, family, and all those whose lives he touched.
Born on November 10, 1933, in The Netherlands to Abraham and Alberta Bart, Jack was a devoted brother to Annie, Jan, Dieuwertje, and Abraham. He immigrated to Canada in 1954 and proudly became a Canadian citizen in 1960.
While attending seminary, Jack met Margaret and they married in 1961. United by their shared commitment to Christian ministry, they moved to Argentina, where they served for 18 transformative years in Patagonia alongside fellow missionaries, including Esther Swain, who would later become Jack’s wife after Margaret’s passing.
During his years in Argentina, Jack tirelessly served both his congregation and the wider community. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, he helped build churches and shelters, supported those struggling with alcoholism, assisted abused women, and offered practical help to anyone in need. His faith was expressed not only through his words, but through a lifetime of meaningful action.
Jack and Margaret returned to Canada in 1980, where he continued his ministry, pastoring churches in Hamilton and St. Catharines. Through his devotion, wisdom, and compassionate leadership, he touched countless lives. In retirement, Jack remained committed to serving others, volunteering extensively with community organizations and his church. When Margaret became ill, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to her care, tenderly supporting her throughout the final years of her life.
Jack is survived by his adoring wife, Esther Swain (née Frueh), whom he married on December 28, 2025, and by his loving daughters, Cynthia, Pamela (Frank), and Jacqueline. He was a deeply cherished grandfather to Jonathan (Erin), Laura (Diego), Sarah (Jeremy), Tesa (Alex), Kateri (Karsten), and Abigail, and took great delight in being the great-grandfather of Marie Therese and Jamie. At his core, Jack was a devoted family man and a beloved patriarch whose strength, guidance, care and love shaped generations.
Jack will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a beautiful legacy of practical service, steadfast faith, and loving kindness. He made a lasting difference in the lives of countless people. He lived out the teachings of Jesus by welcoming the stranger, caring for the vulnerable, feeding the hungry, and helping others without judgment. Whether through grand acts of service or simple everyday kindness, Jack gave generously of himself—often, quite literally, the coat off his back.
A Celebration of Life for Jack will be held at Fellowship Baptist Church in Cobourg, Ontario, on June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will take place at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service. Following the service, family and friends are invited to join together for a light luncheon and fellowship.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Habitat for Humanity www.habitatnorthumberland.ca/donate in recognition of Jack’s many years of dedicated volunteer service and his commitment to helping others build a place to call home.

What an amazing human being, and what an incredible life! I never had the chance to meet Jack, but I have known his daughter, Jacqueline, for many years, and if she is any example of the rest of the family, his legacy of practical service, welcoming the stranger, and caring for the vulnerable will endure for many years beyond his death. My condolences to all the family at the loss of this huge and loving presence in their lives.

Héctor Masters - June 13, 2026

Jack and Margarita were the pastors with whom my parents returned to Christ and with my brothers we met Christ. It was the 1970s, in the inhospitable city of Comodoro Rivadavia. You girls remember when the Masters arrived, we were children and we played in the garden of the house that Jack and Margarita kept like a colorful postcard in the middle of the gray desert that was Argentine Patagonia. This warrior of the faith visited Argentina and said that he regretted that their lives in Argentina left no fruit, what a mistake, you Barth as a family, taught us to love and embrace faith, you girls continue the legacy of those gringos who brought the kingdom to our lives because the task does not end. Our heart is with you, and our children and now grandchildren will know the story of those two Pastors and their daughters, who sacrificed so much so that many like us today know the author who consummates the faith. God bless you, and your children and your children's children forever. Héctor Masters and family

Gabriela Manrrique Moran - June 13, 2026

Today I want to pay tribute to an incredible man of faith who profoundly shaped my childhood. He wasn't just a leader in our community - the Pastor or my best friends dad that would get involved in the PTA and show cool creation movies, or a devoted family man; he was the first person who made the love of Jesus real and visible to me. Through his kindness, his patience, and the way he lived his daily life serving his family, the congregation and the people of San Antonio Oeste in Patagonia Argentina, he modeled what it meant to walk with Christ. Because of the foundation he built and the seeds he planted during my early years, I ultimately came to believe in Jesus and surrender my life to Him. I find so much hope and peace knowing he is now with the Savior he served so faithfully. Thank you, Pastor Bart for being such a great role model. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of everyone you touched. My condolences to Esther, to Cy thia, Pam, Jacqueline and the rest of the family.

David Bell - June 13, 2026
