We are sad to announce that Antonia Aiello (nee Ielo) died peacefully with family by her side at her home, Extendicare Cobourg, on May 21, 2026, nine days after her 97th birthday.
Antonia was born in Reggio Calabria, Italy, and was the oldest of seven children. In 1953, she bravely left Italy as a young bride to join her husband, Francesco. Together, they built a home, a family, and a life in Cobourg. Antonia loved spending her days in her large vegetable and flower gardens and cooking big Italian meals for her family. Her greatest love in life was caring for her children and their families.
Antonia was the cherished wife of Francesco (d. 1994), and mother to her children Giovanna (Fred), Domenico (Penny), Carmelo (Debra), Anna (Stephen), Frank (Pam), and infant daughter Diana (d.1968). She was Nona to Darryl (Lynn), Brandon (Tanya), Jamie (Laura), Alyssa (Mitchell), Elizabeth, Christopher (Alexandra), and Timothy (Sarah), and seven great-grandchildren. Loving sister to Angela Pedace and Tony Ielo and her predeceased brothers Domenico, Francesco, Santo, and Carmelo. Antonia was the cherished Zia to many nephews and nieces in both Italy and Canada.
Antonia was loved by many wonderful caregivers at Extendicare Cobourg and her previous home at Palisade Gardens. Her family is deeply grateful for the loving and compassionate care provided to Antonia over the years, and in her final days. We are especially grateful for the friendship and special care provided by her honorary family member Jeannie.
A service to honour Antonia’s life will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. Cobourg on Tuesday May 26th 2026 at 2 pm with visitation from 1 pm. Reception will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial donation to Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation (www.nhhfoundation.ca/donate/) or Extendicare Cobourg Resident’s Council Fund.
We enjoyed worshipping with Antonia for a short time while she visited at Calvary Baptist church. She was just a joy to be with always so happy. Sincere condolences to her family Tony and Carol
I am so very sorry for your loss. Atonia was a very special woman. I met her when I sold Avon and I always saved her delivery for last as it was a visit. I learned a lot of things about gardening from her over the years and my grandson went with me a few times. She always gave him homemade cookies. He loved visiting her and she would tell him about all the plants in her garden. I think he was 4 or 5 years old. When we left one time with his prized cookies he commented, "wouldn't she the best grandma ever" which made me smile. She was a very dear and kind soul. Kathy
