Carol Shirley McLeod

October 23, 1949 - March 20, 2026

Carol passed away peacefully Friday March 20th, 2026 at Ed’s House Hospice surrounded by love after living with ALS. She will be remembered for who she was beyond her illness and for the place she holds in the hearts of those who loved her. Carol was known for her warmth and the connection she shared with others. Those who knew her will remember her through their own personal moments, conversations and memories that time cannot take away.
ALS profoundly changed Carol’s life and the lives of those close to her. It was a difficult and unforgiving disease and it took much from her. Even so, Carol remained herself – a woman whose life mattered, whose presence was significant, and whose absence will be deeply felt.
She is lovingly remembered by her husband John who stood by her throughout her illness with care and devotion. She will also be remembered by her sister Betty. Carol was predeceased by her parents Joan Atkinson and Bill Atkinson, her sister Margaret “Peggy” Boot. Cherished aunt to her nephew Ross Boot and niece Susan (nee Boot) Martins and her husband Frank Martins and her great nephew Mathew and niece Adelaide Martins
Carol also leaves behind extended family, Sean (Kayan) McLeod, Sheila McLeod, granddaughter Aliya McLeod. They will carry her memory forever. She was loved and will not be forgotten.
A Celebration of Life will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg on Sunday April 12th, 2026 from 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm. Words of remembrance will take place around 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Ed’s House Hospice would be appreciated by the family.

Carol was my sister and friend. From the time she was very young with red hair and freckles she was always laughing and full of fun and mischief...that she never lost. She had a full life, never missing a chance to do something new or meet someone new and before you knew it they were best friends. Even in her last weeks she became friend with the nurses and they had their little jokes together. She loved to socialize and be the hostess with her beloved husband John. From the time she met him they were very close and till her last days you could see and hear the love between them. My heart goes out to him. He was always near anticipating her needs. Carol was always there for me, inviting me to stay with them and go off on some little adventure or shopping trip or helping me move to Cobourg so we could be closer together. I will miss her and her laughter and hugs. Baamaapii Carol I will love you forever, sis.

Carol will always hold such a special place in my heart. Even through the most difficult moments, she met each day with warmth and kindness that I will never forget. She truly touched my life, and I will think of her often. John and Betty, it was so clear how deeply you loved and cared for Carol. You were incredible caregivers, and your compassion and dedication meant so much to her. I will be thinking of you both during this difficult time. Love Alex (SLP)

Our friend, Carol, the White Buffalo, is free! John, you were right, ALS is a brutal and unrelenting illness. First, it took her voice. Carol loved to engage people in conversation. She was so articulate. Then it took her ability to swallow. She enjoyed food and the social part of it with friends and family. And then finally, it began to take her breath, all while leaving her mind sharp and observant! And John, you were there every step of the way, from 8 in the morning to 8 at night, month after month. You cared for her every need whether it was to fix her pillow or calibrate her breathing apparatus, you did it all in the exact way she wanted it done until you got the most important acknowledgment, the thumbs up! 👍🏻 We know you are heartbroken as are her Dear Ones but Please remember the love and care you gave her and be proud and at peace for all you did for her so selflessly. Baamaapii, White Buffalo, Baamaapii

I’m very saddened to hear the news of Carol’s passing. I knew Carol from her time at Heidelberg where she was a real team player and was involved in trade shows and many social events. She worked very hard and was a pleasure to work with. My sincere condolences to her family and husband John who was also a big asset at Heidelberg.

Bill and I will miss Carol’s beautiful spirit. Her support for my music will always be remembered as well. Carol would bring a crowd out to support me and my music. Carol always had an uplifting and cheerful way about her. The first time I met Carol without even meeting her, she had agreed to come into my home to watch our beloved Lucy our golden retriever. And from there on, we were instant friends. Rest easy Carol. Biggest hugs to John and to all who loved Carol. 🙏
