Brenda, John, and Barb. So sorry to hear about your Mom's passing. I remember running into her at the grocery store a few years ago and saying hello, and she didn't recognize me. When I told her who I was she laughed and said, "Oh for goodness' sake" and then we had quite a long chat. One of us hadn't changes at all. The other one apparently had. Lots of fond memories.

Ann Closs - March 4, 2026

Dear Hinman Family, My condolescences in the loss of your dear mother. Shirley was a beautiful and kind woman. I always enjoyed our conversation when our paths crossed. Our families go back many years to high school days when Shirley and her sister Ruth attended high school in Cobourg with my mother, Patricia Birmingham Gummer and her sisters Betty Ravensdale-Montague and Jean Stevenson — the Birmingham girls. Included in the friendship was your Aunt Grace, your father’s sister. They had many good times together playing bridge. I am reminded of your family when I travel past Shirley and Ruth Streets in west end Cobourg. Your grandfather built the homes there and named the streets after his daughters. On a few occasions as a teenager, I had the pleasure of babysitting Brenda and John. My thoughts are with you all as you morn the loss of Shirley, who has been a part of your lives for so long. I hope you find comfort in the fact that so many people held her in high regard. She really was special. Sincerely, Ann Gummer Closs
