It is with great sadness that the familyof Gwendolyn Florence (Waller) Devaney, announces her peaceful passing at Ed's House Hospice, Cobourg on Tuesday, January 6th at the age of 78.
Left to mourn Gwen are her beloved husband Tom Devaney, her daughters Sherry Richardson (Jason) and Christine Devaney, her sister Brenda Quinn (Ted), her grandchildren Michael (Sarah), Blake, Riley, Natosha (Kyle), Braeden and Colin and Great Granddaughters Jennie and Hannah. Also missing her is her much loved dog Tucker.
Gwen was a very accomplished seamstress who loved to crochet and knit lovely keepsakes for her family as well as being a wonderful baker. She had several careers, starting as a bank teller with Royal Bank, then working as Head Cashier at Save-a-Centre in Cobourg, then movingto White Rock, B.C. where she managed a jewelry store and finally, as the president of the board of the condo where she and Tom have lived the past 15 years in Cobourg's New Amherst. She approached each job with great dedication.
The past 15 years have been very challenging for Gwen as she was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2010, undergoing intensive chemo and a stem cell transplant from which she mostly recovered. However, the cancer left her with severe kidney disease requiring thrice weekly dialysis treatments at Northumberland Hills Hospital. We would like to express our appreciation to the nurses in the Dialysis Unit for their exemplary care. She endured the dialysis treatments with her usual optimism and determination until sadly, this past October she contracted C.difficile, from which she was unable to recover.
The family would like to thank Dr. Essak and the nurses at Ed's House, for their wonderful care and compassion these past days. In memory of Gwen, donations to Ed's House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre would be much appreciated by her family.
The familywillhold a celebration of life for Gwen. Friends and family are invited to the home of her sister and brother-in-law, Brenda and Ted Quinn, at 60 Hamilton Avenue, Cobourg, starting at 1 p.m. with prayers and memories at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026.

I am so deeply sorry for the loss of Gwen, A wonderful wife, sister and mother. I have many memories of her as Christine and I were growing up. I remember she would be up late into the night in her sewing room, her and Tom sitting in their own armchairs facing the Tv to watch baseball games. Calling my dad late at night to pick me up from yet another attempted sleepover when I would become homesick. I was always welcome in their home as long as Christine and I weren’t too noisy and didn’t make any mess. That’s just how it was and how Gwen liked it. I feel very blessed to have known her and could be there for one last visit near the end. She will be missed and thought of often xoxo

Dear Tom , Sherry, Christine and Brenda. I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Gwen. I first met Gwen when I was on dialysis in the Cobourg hospital, we were on the same days (shift) 3 times a week. She would always stop by my pod after she was done her treatment to chat, usually about family or baseball and the happenings with the Jays, as she was a great knowledgeable fan! I was lucky enough to have received a transplant, which got me out of there, but I would go back for visits with Gwen and the crew. Please accept my condolences at this time.
Tom and the entire Devaney family, please accept our sincere condolences. Gwen was so kind to be our shoulder to lean on during Joe’s first SC transplant journey! Take care of yourselves and know that Gwen spoke of you all with fondness and love..
Sending our deepest condolences on the passing of your sister. Please know you are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
