With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Rick Jones on Monday, December 22, 2025, at Ed’s House Hospice following a brief battle with cancer. Beloved husband and best friend of Pam (nee Tapscott), and son of the late Barb and Ed Jones. Loving father of Adam Quinn (Ginette) and John Quinn (Kristy), beloved grandfather to Mathew, Joshua, Kaitlyn, Bella and Xander. Dear brother of Brian (Pam), Paul (Gus), and the late Bob and Dave. Rick lived a full life and his presence was a gift to everyone who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and a family that will miss him dearly.
Rick was a man of boundless energy and ambition. Whether he was skimming the water on his Hoby Cat or organizing the legendary “Gonzo Ski Club” trips to Mont Tremblant for the last 40 years, he was the undisputed life and soul of the party. Rick was famous for a vocabulary that was entirely his own. If you knew Rick, you likely didn’t go by your given name; he had a nickname for everyone—and if you were special, he probably had two or three for you. His passions were as high-energy as his personality. An avid golfer, Rick viewed "opening day" at the club as a mere suggestion, often hitting the links long before the season officially started and well after the final frost. When he wasn’t on the green or the water, he was likely air-drumming to Rush—the "greatest rock band in the world"—whom he saw in concert an incredible 57 times. He also held a deep fascination for aviation, specifically the history and legacy of the Avro Arrow. With a keen interest in skydiving, Rick also organized numerous “Gonzo” skydive adventures for he and his friends, and members of his family.
Above all, Rick was a loyal friend and motivator. As retired Chief Building Official for the Municipality of Brighton, Rick understood how to build things. Not just structures, but a vibrant, well-lived life. With his “get it done” attitude, he pushed his friends and family to be their best selves, constantly encouraging them to finish projects and improve their lives. His greatest love, however, was reserved for his wife, his two sons and their families; and his beloved siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, "Gonzo" adventures, and a vocabulary that we will spend the rest of our lives trying to translate.
The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Northumberland Hills Hospital and Ed’s House for their compassionate care and kindness during Rick’s illness.
There will be a Celebration of Ricks Life at the Columbus Community Centre Cobourg, 232 Spencer St. E., on January 17th, from 1 - 4 pm .
In lieu of flowers, donations to Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre or Northumberland Hills Hospital, would be most appreciated.
So very sorry to hear of Rick passing, my deepest condolences to his family. Peter Delong
Pam and the Jones family, we are truly sorry for your loss. Rick was a unique and special person. Mark has great memories of Rick both on and off the golf course. His running commentary and ‘quick’ pace of play will sorely be missed. Our hearts go out to you all. Blue skies and cheers
Rick, you’re gone too soon! Met you way back in High School and would cross paths every so often. You loved life and of course RUSH!! To the family my sincere condolences. Jeff & Robin.
Pam and family and Rick’s close friends, I am beyond sad to hear of Rick’s passing, yet memories of funny and unforgettable times with Rick came to me immediately. He was such an inspiration as a person and colleague, and an example of how to live life. I met Rick when I started as a CBO more than 30 years ago, and will always remember the nicknames Deaner, Mr Chair, Mr Pres and Captain Peterborough!! I tell anyone that will listen to move to your own drum and take everything life gives you, and Rick was always that person to me. He also had a lot of integrity and honour in his approach to life, and I will always cherish the time and fun we had together and mostly with the Pine Ridge Chapter and OBOA events. And I admire the way he lived his life, not a moment wasted! Our thoughts are with you all!
Pam. We were saddened to hear about Rick’s passing. He was a very special person. His positivity, energy, enthusiasm and wonderful sense of humour spread joy whereever he went. Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Adam and John. Lynn & Bill Thomas
So sorry to hear of the passing of a truly great man. I did up many a Gonzo ski trip decal and signs for his charity golf tournaments. He was the best kind of person there is.
Pam, Brian and the rest of the family, I want to convey my most sincere condolences. I don't have many great friends, besides my family, but Rick certainly was one of them. His larger-than-life personality, great sense of humour, and huge heart made him someone very special in my life. I am privileged to have spent time and some joyful adventures with him, from concerts to flying to an airshow. I am also privileged that he called "Capitaine"... in French. He will be with me, and many others, for the rest of our lives. Sylvio
Pam, we want you to know that we are thinking of you at this sad time. Keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. Jeanette Drury and Wayne McCurdy

It's always too early to leave your Family & Friends. Rest assured you will be missed as a husband, brother, dad & grandpa.& ... When I lost my dad in 2004 you were there with words of comfort. Best wishes...Ron Kolbe
Pam, I am sorry to hear this news. I have fond memories of Rick - especially the time he came out to Wooler to see the damage that our pileated woodpeckers had done to our tree. Rick was a fabulous man, and he will be missed by so many. I hope you are alright - this was a terrible blow. Sending hugs and condolences.
A very nicely written obituary, it captures a lot of his special attributes as he was a unique soul that enjoyed life to the fullest, I couldn't imagine how hard it would be, Cancer really sucks. My condolences to you Pam, I am so glad I got on that Gonzo Ski Bus 40 years ago...... Rickardo was always a good pal on and off the Ski Slopes, he could always make us laugh with his creative vocabulary and his radical intelligent conversations. I am still not sure how or even why Rick nicknamed me Prime Minister but I carried that title around every Ski Weekend, Rock Tour, Skydive or somewhere on a Golf outing. He will be greatly missed, I just doesn't seem real......a big Gonzo hug to all that loved him.....
Pam , family and the Jones family, so sorry to hear that Rick has passed. My condolences. I enjoyed getting to know Rick as a colleague and working with him . Lots of great memories of our golf outings as well . He was a great man and will be truly missed. Rest in peace my friend .

Pam & Family - Sending you all my heartfelt condolences on this incredible loss. I was fortunate to work with Rick for many years at Murray and then Quinte West until he continued his career in Brighton. The memories I have of Rick and his exuberance for so many things - from monarch butterflies to finding birds for taxidermy, or when he purchased tires from an Indy car race and stored them in his office - are many and will be treasured. My heart hurts for this loss but as he recently assured me, he "lived an incredible life". Pam - please know that our thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
Blue skies and cheers

Rick was great to work with and always willing to help me solve a building or planning problem while at the municipality. His invitation to be part of a Gonzo sky diving adventure is something l will never forget. May the love of those around you bring comfort in this time of sorry.
It was with much sadness I learned of Rick's illness and demise. He was a man always with a smile that you were never sure you weren't going to be the centre of mischief. Dear Pam and family. There are no words to express how sad I feel right now. Having met Rick for the first time in 1974 at Grandpa Goulds cottage in Quebec. The whole family was there and Aunt Joan and I were there on our honeymoon. Over the years I watched as you and your brothers grew into fine young men. Tragedy hit through out the years with the passing of family members but there were great times too. Being the MC at your wedding was a blast. A lot of laughs that day. Hooter (stuffed owl) is still watching over us. Take care. I’m sure there was a special place set aside just for you in heaven. Love Uncle Ger

Pam and family, Rick and I worked together for about 20 years. When he retired, it took weeks for him to clear out his items that included photos, objects, taxidermy animals and books. His knowledge went far beyond the building code. Rick often spoke of his love, Pam and I am grateful that she reached out to me recently. Pam, you are in my thoughts He had nick names for his friends but I had a special name for him. I always called him “Tricky Ricky”. Rick, you will be missed beyond measure
