With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Catherine Pearson, age 67, who left us peacefully on November 5, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer. Catherine was surrounded by her loving family.
Cathie would tell you that her two greatest accomplishments and joys in life are her daughters, Alexandra (Dylan) and Avery (John). Catherine dedicated her life to giving her daughters the best life possible, and her daughters are forever grateful. Despite her progressing illness, Catherine fought hard to attend both of her daughters' weddings. Her daughters will cherish the endless love and precious moments shared with their mom forever.
Her nurturing qualities did not stop with her children. Catherine was a dedicated and compassionate nurse who began her career in labour and delivery in Sudbury. During her twenty-five years working as a Durham Public Health nurse, Catherine helped countless members of the community. She was also a highly respected prenatal educator in the Durham Region and at Mount Sinai Hospital. Catherine had a deep and avid passion for educating new parents and working with babies.
Catherine has gone to join her mother, Mary Usitalo, who passed away before her. Catherine is survived by her siblings, Peter (Cindy), Patricia (Mike), and Tracey, whom she cherished. She couldn’t be more grateful for the bond they share and for their dedication as aunts and uncles in her daughters’ lives. Catherine is lovingly remembered by nieces, nephews, beloved relatives in Scotland, and many supportive friends.
Catherine had an incredible sense of humour, a contagious, spirited laugh, and the ability to make anyone around her smile. Her generosity, empathy, and warmth were far-reaching and touched many of those who surrounded her. Catherine’s friends often acknowledged her impeccable taste, passion for fashion, and some even referred to her as a diva. There was so much more to Catherine than words can express, but to know her was to know true strength and humility. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know her.
A celebration of Catherine’s life will be held on Saturday, November 15, from 1:00–3:30 on the second floor of 12welve Bistro in Whitby. At 2 p.m., speeches in Catherine’s memory will begin. Those who wish to remember her fondly are invited to celebrate her remarkable life. To honour Catherine’s cancer journey and love for animals, particularly her best pal Charlie, donations can be made in her honour to Mount Sinai Hospital or the Northumberland Humane Society.
I met Cathie when she was expecting her first child and was incredibly lucky to meet her again at the health department where we both worked. Cathie was kind and shared her ability to manage through difficult things with grace, humour and humility. I recall with fondness the days waiting for our children lessons at Thomas house of Music where we had to "keep it down" so not to disturb the teachers. We cooked up some plans to get the girls down to St. Mikes for the dances among a few other little capers of the day. So very sorry for your loss Alex, and Avery you were her delight and joy; her bright light will live through you now. I send my deepest sympathy to you especially, and the rest of your family, as you journey through this sad time of loss.
I was so saddened to hear this news, Cathie and I attended St. Cecilia together with six other classmates, some of which I am still in touch with, she certainly touched the lives of so many people, and leaves behind a legacy her daughters and wider family can be proud of, my condolences to her family and close friends on your loss, may she Rest In Peace, hugs and prayers ... Roz
Dear Avery, John and Family. We are so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. We are thinking of you and your family and praying for peace and comfort for all in this difficult time. She showed such strength and grace throughout her battle with cancer. She loved to speak about her daughters and was so proud of all their accomplishments. Most of all she wanted to witness her daughters marrying and that she did. We will miss seeing her as she takes her long walks with Charlie.

Avery, John & Family, Please accept my sincere condolences on Cathie's passing. Your mom was such a warm, bright spirit who always had time to stop and chat with me anytime I saw her. I often ran into her while out shopping so it made me smile to see her "passion for fashion" mentioned, she certainly had great style. The last time I saw her she showed me photos of your family at your wedding and it was evident how proud she was of you all. Sending love and light as you navigate this difficult time.
