Yvonne Ashley Stover Green

May 23, 1934 - November 2, 2025

Sunday, November 2nd, 2025, Yvonne passed away at Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice.
Yvonne is survived by her beloved son Philip Arthur Stover, his wife Tammy and her cherished grandchildren Connor and Lachlan.
Predeceased by her parents Lisle and Edith Way and her sisters Renie Simpson and Dorothy Dorland.
Yvonne was a graduate of Queen’s University and post graduate of the University of Toronto. She held Ministry of Education Specialist Certification in Special Education. Throughout her 35 year career with the Northumberland and Newcastle Board of Education, she taught every elementary grade level, worked as an Exchange Teacher in the UK, served as Special Education Resource in the Consultants’ office and retired as a principal. She was a member of various provincial committees with the Ontario Federation of Women Teachers.
As an Exchange Teacher, she was presented to the Queen Mother with Margaret Thatcher in attendance, received by the Bishop of Westminster and the Canadian High Commissioner. As the guest of the local Member of Parliament she attended the sitting House of Commons. She and Philip travelled extensively and on weekends explored London ‘on foot’ and on the ‘tube’. They made life long friendships.
She was a member of various local volunteer boards including the Cobourg Historical Society, the Cobourg Library Board, Art Gallery and Probus Club. She is a past president of the Northumberland Hills Hospital Auxiliary.
Yvonne loved wild flowers and her annual Mother’s Day wildflower hike (rain or shine) with Philip. Her favourite holiday was heli-hiking in the Cariboo Mountains and later exploring the Churchill Tundra with Philip.
She spent years researching her family ancestry with visits to Scotland, Ireland and Price Edward County ancestral homes and farms. She treasured her family antiques collection.
Her many travels included the Baltic, the Black Sea, Norway, Austria, Finland, Russia, Holland, France, Germany, Alaska and the Yukon.
As a youngster she could never have imagined that one day she would stand on the very spot where Columbus was given permission by Queen Isabella to sail to the “New World” or from a gondola to see Marco Polo’s home in Venice.
In keeping with Yvonne’s wishes, a private family service will take place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Northumberland Hills Hospital or Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice would be appreciated by the family.
The family would like to thank all of the staff at Extendicare Port Hope, Northumberland Hills Hospital and Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice for their compassionate care of Yvonne.

Philip, I loved your mom, right from the days when I used to babysit you on Hawthorne. Also so fondly remember your dad, Art. I tried to find your mom on FB a couple of years ago, wish I’d made more of an effort to get in touch. I love all the things you did together. And hey, you and Steve went across the tracks?!

Steve Macklin - November 7, 2025

Phil was my very first friend as a child. We played together on Maplewood and Hawthorne with our scooters and mustang bikes. Later Phil and I would go explore along the lake or over the train tracks or in the back woods. We would usually get into some trouble together. Yvonne - but I always remembered her as Mrs Stover, was like a 2nd mom. She always had a a smile. I remember Phil's 4th birthday party when Mrs Stover tripped and the birthday cake fell upside down on the floor. We ate it anyways. Phil, I have fond memories of our youth . Your mom was a big part of that. All the best to you and your family. Steve

Philip, Tammy & Boys, I first knew Yvonne in 1955-'56, 70 years ago when we shared weekly trips to and from Peterborough Teacher's College. Then many years on the local. Education scene and latterly when I was entrusted with Chelsea their beloved dog many times. In visits back and forth over the years, family was so very important to her. A memorial gift will be made to Ed's House in honour of our long friendship. Be extra kind to yourselves.

Philip, Tammy & boys, I'm so sorry to hear this sad news! I've known Yvonne for many years, since meeting her in Brighton when I worked for Dr. Dunnett, many years ago. I also knew her sister, Renie. It was such a nice surprise when she moved next door where we lived in the Forest Hill community, off Ontario St., north of Cobourg. I visited her a few weeks ago in Port Hope, and am so glad I did. I can't count the number of stories I wrote about wonderful things that were happening at the school, at the library, at the hospital, at so many places, where her name figured prominently. Mrs. Stover was my Grade 2 teacher. I often think that my career as a primary teacher was the result of my love for her as a teacher. I have such fond memories of her kind and patient manner. When I was a student teacher at Merwin Greer, she was the principal and became a role model and mentor. I was very fortunate to learn from such a gifted educator. Many years later, Mrs. Stover dropped by my parents’ house while I was visiting and presented me with a Bo-Peep doll from her doll collection. She had told me that she always thought of me when she saw the doll and wanted me to have it. Thinking of you all as you navigate the loss of such a wonderful woman. Debra Hubbel Leguard
