Muriel Sudbury passed away peacefully on April 25th, in her 105th year. Born in Alberta in 1920, she grew up during the Great Depression. During World War II, while contributing to the war effort at Neon Products in Vancouver, she met Alan Sudbury, the love of her life. They married in 1947 and raised four children—David, Harold, Peter, and Nancy. Alan was transferred to Toronto in 1964 and the family settled in Scarborough. Muriel became a medical secretary and worked for many years in a medical practice.
After Alan’s retirement, they moved to Cobourg, Ontario, where they became active members of the local arts community. Though they enjoyed traveling, their greatest joy was time spent with family. They were proud, devoted grandparents to nine grandchildren.
After Alan’s passing in 2005, Muriel—fondly known as Grandma Suds—remained active at Palisade Gardens in Cobourg for nearly 20 years. Even as her eyesight and hearing faded, she stayed engaged and full of warmth until a fall required long-term care.
Muriel’s sparkling green eyes and smile lit up every room. She found joy in painting, photography, music, and conversation. Her words of wisdom stayed with many, especially this favorite saying:
“Life is like a path of newly driven snow; be careful how you tread it, for every step will show.”
Rest in peace, Muriel. Love always
—Your family and friends
I fondly remember meeting Muriel when my late step-mother Molly was a member of the CAC. The photo her family chose captured her perfectly. My condolences to you.
I recently learned of Muriel's passing. I had the privilege of getting to know both Muriel and Alan when I was the proprietress of the Train Place Cafe & Gallery. She was a bubbly, happy, and vivacious lady, as well as a huge fan and supporter of Alan and his artistic talents. A truly beautiful woman, she has now rejoined the love of her life!
Muriel was a dear friend always cheerful and positive even when her eye-site was failing we met at the Art club and had a lot in common.
Muriel was A dear friend we met at the art club and kept in touch for many years she was always happy and cheerful we all miss her.
I am sorry Muriel has passed but she will be in a better place. I know Muriel from Art Club. She had me up to see her apartment in Palisades. I remember her as being very happy and kind.
Just heard of Muriel's passing. She was a great fun lady and would NEVER admit her age - so maybe that was the secret to living such a long, successful life. Muriel will be remembered by CAC members and will be missed by a lot of people. My condolences to the many family members. Sheila McCoy (Cobourg Art Club)

Condolences to the Family of Muriel Sudbury. I knew Shirley and as church family at Trinity Church. As a child of God she will now be in the Kingdom of Heaven with her Lord enjoying the rewards!
Muriel was the sweetest lady with a lovely chuckle. Even as she aged she remained cheerful and busy. She was a good friend of my mother in laws, living opposite Margot at the Palisades. Appropriately named Violet she loved flowers and gardening and was very supportive of the Hort Society and Palisades Courtyard garden. Always welcoming, I used to enjoy visiting her. My condolences to the Family for your loss.
Just learned of Muriel's passing - had no idea she was still alive after all these many years! What a trooper she was - always with a smile, courageously accepting her loss of sight (so traumatic for an artist) and cheerfully continuing on no matter what challenges came her way in her marvelous long life. My sincere sympathies to her family.
