Passed away peacefully at Ed's House on Monday, May 19th, 2025 in her 106th year.
Beloved wife of the late William Maughan, daughter of the late Verna and the late Clarence Brooks, sister of the late Marion Minifie. Loving mother of Robin Maughan (Rosemary), Barbara Maughan (Fred), and John Maughan (Deborah). Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her nine grandchildren: Karen Ham (the late Peter), Brenda Petzold (Todd), Tina Maughan-Downes (Greg), Patricia Geurts (Ian), Keith Maughan (Miranda), Christopher McIntosh, Ian McIntosh (Lauri), Robert Hardy, and Ashley Hardy (Nathan), fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. They were very special to her and her interest in them added significantly to her happiness. Muriel greatly valued her nieces and nephews, here and in England, and made a special effort to write and to connect with them regularly.
Muriel is appreciated as a local historian, having researched and written a detailed family history and having published a historical record of the local farming community in Pioneer Stories of Cold Springs. She is recognized for the many quilts she made and donated, and for her frequent calls and visits to keep the family and community together, often over a cup of tea. She was active in the choir, United Church Women, and Women’s Institute. During retirement, she volunteered at Cobourg Public Library, carpet bowled, and she and Billie square danced across the country.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 6 at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg. Visitation will be at 12:30pm, service at 1:30pm. Reception to follow.

Natalia and I have fond memories of travelling to Peterborough together with Muriel and William to square dance at the LiftLok Square club. These were good times. We kept in touch with Muriel even after we moved away from Cobourg in 1989, ending up eventually in Langley, British Columbia. She was a wonderful, caring lady. We will miss her. May God hold her and William in His arms forever. Blessings, Allan & Natalia Cusworth

Muriel was like a second mother to me. It was wonderful to often see her in the audience with Barb and Fred at the Noteworthy Singer's Concerts where I am a member. Muriel was my go to person for genealogy info on my mother's side of the family. It was about a month ago when I wasn't sure of the date when she and Billie hosted a family reunion at the Cold Springs farm but Muriel was able to tell me. Muriel was always an inspiration to me in many ways. She and Billie inspired my late husband, John MacLennan and I to take up square dancing which we enjoyed for many years. Muriel will be missed so very much.
Robin, Rosemary and the Maughan Family. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to you and the whole family. Your mother lived a good long and fruitful life and was proud of her family.
My sincere condolences to the Maughan family. I had the pleasure of meeting Mrs. Maughan last summer at a Coldsprings Supper when i was visiting my sister. A remarkable woman for sure.
To the Maughan Family. I'm 67 and lived on Brook Rd. S. in Cobourg as a child. I believe Mrs. Maughan was our Egg Lady, I remember her coming each week in her BIG green car to deliver eggs to our family, and have a cup of tea with my mother, Brigid. I always thought her name was Mrs. Mom, and it suited her because she was so kind and gentle. May she rest in peace.
Dear John and Family , we are sending our sincere condolences . From Marion & Ric.
