Passed away peacefully at Ed's House on Monday, May 19th, 2025 in her 106th year.
Beloved wife of the late William Maughan, daughter of the late Verna and the late Clarence Brooks, sister of the late Marion Minifie. Loving mother of Robin Maughan (Rosemary), Barbara Maughan (Fred), and John Maughan (Deborah). Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her nine grandchildren: Karen Ham (the late Peter), Brenda Petzold (Todd), Tina Maughan-Downes (Greg), Patricia Geurts (Ian), Keith Maughan (Miranda), Christopher McIntosh, Ian McIntosh (Lauri), Robert Hardy, and Ashlee Hardy (Nathan), fifteen great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. They were very special to her and her interest in them added significantly to her happiness. Muriel greatly valued her nieces and nephews, here and in England, and made a special effort to write and to connect with them regularly.
Muriel is appreciated as a local historian, having researched and written a detailed family history and having published a historical record of the local farming community in Pioneer Stories of Cold Springs. She is recognized for the many quilts she made and donated, and for her frequent calls and visits to keep the family and community together, often over a cup of tea. She was active in the choir, United Church Women, and Women’s Institute. During retirement, she volunteered at Cobourg Public Library, carpet bowled, and she and Billie square danced across the country.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 6 at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg. Visitation will be at 12:30pm, service at 1:30pm. Reception to follow.
If desired, donations may be made to St. Paul's United Church, Cold Springs or Ed's House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre.
Dear Barb, John, Robin and family. My heart is heavy yet I smile through my tears. Muriel was an inspiration and her spirit will live on in so many of us. The laughter we shared, and the quiet moments together will be forever cherished. We remember, we honour, we carry you in our hearts.
I was sorry to hear of Muriel's death and want to extend my deepest sympathy to her family. I knew Muriel at Empire Crossing and always enjoyed talking to her. She was an amazing person and I was lucky to know her.

Muriel was a lovely lady, so kind and caring. I remember the many times that my mom, Mary Whitefield, would be excited that Muriel had invited her to tea! My thoughts are with the family.

Muriel will be fondly remembered for sure. She touched the lives of so many of us. I knew her as a young child, and when we met over the years at Massey family gatherings, she always had a smile for me. Her face radiated kindness throughout her life. Her last days may have been hard at 106, but I remember her being sharp-minded all her life. What a blessing! Godspeed into Heaven, Muriel, I know you've most likely been inducted into a very special group of angels who need your kindness and smiling face to greet newcomers. I firmly feel Heaven is not a place we go to sit around, as I thought when I was a child, but a place God has for you to use all the talents you've honed in this life. You have honed so many skills, the most wonderful of which is your love and kindness, which you gave us all.

Our sincere sympathies to all members of the Maughan family on the passing of Muriel. She lived a long, and rich life. And now, she has gone to be reunited with her "Billie". ❤️❤️ To me she was like a second mother. We all have our shared and personal special memories. Personally, since moving to Mexico, I always looked forward to our chats, her emails and our yearly visits. Reg and I never missed a chance to spend time with her during our yearly visits to Ontario, over the past 20 years. RIP, Muriel dear.

Muriel will always be in my memories as a kind and caring person, and Billy full of laughter and stories. My Mom and Dad, and Muriel and Billy met as young couples in Cobourg and from earliest remembrances of my childhood the Maughan's were always a part of our lives-- whether we were at their farm in Coldsprings or they were at our farm south of Peterborough enjoying a meal or just having a visit. My sister Linda formed a strong bond of friendship with Barb and remained best friends from early childhood until Linda's passing in Jan 2024. Muriel was a like a second mom to my sister and friendships like theirs is rare. I hope Linda and Muriel are enjoying a joyous reunion in their heavenly home.
Muriel was my link to the past, and I could count on her to fill in the blanks, when I had questions about my family tree. I feel proud that we shared some of that lineage. I will miss our phone chats. My sympathy goes to Muriel's family. Marian Davidson

Muriel was like second mother to me. I am going to miss our phone conversations of me asking her about the old days of Cold Springs. Our Condolences to the Maughan family. Garth and Nancy
One of my earliest memories of Muriel Maughan was that she and her husband sat in front of us at Church. She always gave us a smile as the Beedham tribe entered. Probably the last time I saw her, was when Mom was temporarily at Empire Crossing. Mom's first day there, I saw Muriel in the dining room, she recognized me right away, and we had a chat. Later that evening, she went to Mom's room and they had a visit, which I was grateful for. Sending my most sincere sympathy to the Maughan family.
My sincere condolences to the Maugham family. Such a wonderful lady in so many ways.
We felt sad to hear of Muriel's passing. We knew Muriel from carpet bowling at the CCC several years ago and felt she was a lovely lady. Our thoughts and prayers are with all her family.

Natalia and I have fond memories of travelling to Peterborough together with Muriel and William to square dance at the LiftLok Square club. These were good times. We kept in touch with Muriel even after we moved away from Cobourg in 1989, ending up eventually in Langley, British Columbia. She was a wonderful, caring lady. We will miss her. May God hold her and William in His arms forever. Blessings, Allan & Natalia Cusworth

Muriel was like a second mother to me. It was wonderful to often see her in the audience with Barb and Fred at the Noteworthy Singer's Concerts where I am a member. Muriel was my go to person for genealogy info on my mother's side of the family. It was about a month ago when I wasn't sure of the date when she and Billie hosted a family reunion at the Cold Springs farm but Muriel was able to tell me. Muriel was always an inspiration to me in many ways. She and Billie inspired my late husband, John MacLennan and I to take up square dancing which we enjoyed for many years. Muriel will be missed so very much.
Robin, Rosemary and the Maughan Family. I wish to extend my sincere condolences to you and the whole family. Your mother lived a good long and fruitful life and was proud of her family.

To the Maughan Family. I'm 67 and lived on Brook Rd. S. in Cobourg as a child. I believe Mrs. Maughan was our Egg Lady, I remember her coming each week in her BIG green car to deliver eggs to our family, and have a cup of tea with my mother, Brigid. I always thought her name was Mrs. Mom, and it suited her because she was so kind and gentle. May she rest in peace.
Dear John and Family , we are sending our sincere condolences . From Marion & Ric.
