It is with love and grateful hearts that we remember a life well lived. Arthur William Joynt passed away peacefully in his 90th year at the Golden Plough Lodge on Monday, May 12, 2025. His legacy will live on in those he loved the most: his wife of 62 years Velma (nee Rea), his children Derek (Anita), Bryn (Bonnie) and Dorelle, as well as his treasured grandchildren, Alyssa, Kylan, and William.
Arthur will be deeply missed by his brother Neil (Margaret), sister-in-law Beatrice (the late Wilbert), and other cherished members of the Joynt and Rea families. In death, he is reunited with his loving parents, Thomas and Hilda, sister Margaret (Cecil) Holder and brother Wilbert.
In his youth, Arthur spent time in 4H (raising prize winning chickens!), he loved to dance, play sports and socialise with friends.
After high school, Arthur attended Ottawa Teachers’ College and later Queen’s University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree. Arthur was a life member of the Teachers’ Federation and was recognized in 2007 for 50 years of teaching (36 in the classroom and 14 additional years as a supply teacher). Teaching was a rewarding career that led to many lasting friendships with former colleagues and students, including some from the English as a Second Language classes he taught.
Arthur embodied the values of gratitude, generosity and selflessness in all he did. Over the years, Arthur served on the Cobourg library board, was president of the Queen’s Alumni Association, was the manager of his son’s soccer team, and was an organizer of the Driftwood Bridge Club.
As an active parishioner at St. Peter’s Church, Arthur sang in the choir, was a member of the sidesman team, served as treasurer of the Men’s Club, and was involved as a group committee member of Scouts Canada.
Arthur loved to travel and enjoyed meeting people along the way. Over the years, he and Velma cruised with family to the Caribbean, the Panama Canal and Alaska. He flew ‘across the pond’ a number of times to visit England and Scotland. When not setting sail or visiting the British Isles, he enjoyed camping and many road trips throughout Canada and the United States.
Arthur will be remembered as someone who greeted everyone with a warm and friendly smile. He loved making new friends, including those he met at Bingo, euchre and bridge, both within the community and at Palisade Gardens.
Arthur’s family was the centre of his life, and he cherished every moment he spent with them including holidays, game nights, daily phone calls, and watching movies with his grandchildren.
The family would like to thank the numerous doctors, nurses, personal support workers, and other healthcare professionals who helped care for Arthur throughout his journey.
Family and friends are invited to share their memories of Arthur during visitation at MacCoubrey’s Funeral Home, Cobourg, on Thursday, May 15, 2025 from 6 pm to 9 pm. Arthur’s life will be celebrated at St. Peter’s Anglican Church on Friday, May 16,, 2025 at 11 am. A private family burial will follow the reception.
Those wishing to make a donation in remembrance of Arthur are kindly asked to consider giving to St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Cobourg or the Northumberland Hills Hospital.

My deepest condolences to the Joynt family. Bryn’s dad… Mr. Joynt to me… always exuded such positivity. It’s remarkable how he not only put up with our band’s jamming (most likely ‘noise’) in the home’s basement, but he encouraged it! Mr. Joynt didn’t seem to have any limits when it came to support. A rare and precious soul is that for those around him. Wishing you strength and peace during this time.
Velma and family. Sincere condolences on the loss of your husband and father. Julius and Louise
My deepest condolences for your loss. I have many fond memories of Mr. Joynt, when visiting my friend Dorelle (xo) in high school. He always had a joke, big smile and a deep laugh and was always very kind. May he rest in peace.

I have so many amazing and adoring memories of Mr. Joynt as a young girl attending Grant Sine Public School. I always had a soft spot for him and always will. I was so blessed meeting up with him one day at Walmart while he was zipping around on his scooter, and I was able to get a picture of him and I together. I will cherish that picture forever. My prayers are with you and your family, Mrs. Joynt. ( I still can never bring myself to call you by your first names, even though I'm an adult). So much love and respect for you both.
So sorry for your loss. Mr. Joynt was a great guy, he taught me at Grant Sine school and was a wonderful teacher. Later in life when I was no longer his student he was always friendly and stopped to have a chat. He will be missed.

To Mrs. Joynt, Dorelle, Derek and Anita, Bryn and Bonnie, Alissa, Kylan and William, the world has lost a good one. Growing up, our families were pretty darn close, and somewhat interchangeable! No Christmas Eve, or New Year's Eve passed without the fun and noise of our two families. The kid's table was always a raucous good time! I remember camping trips to Presqu'île, snowmobiling and toboganning. Dad and Mr. Joynt were always so much fun. It is hard to accept that they are gone, and we are still here trying to figure out how to go on without them. Good thing there are so many wonderful memories to hold on to. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all as you find your new "normal". Heidi and Pat Behan

My first meeting with Mr. Joynt was as my grade 5 teacher his first year teaching in Cobourg. He was a wonderful teacher and man of faith as he arranged for Rev. Bull to teach our class religion. When I next met Arthur it was a fellow parishioner of St. Peter’s in the late 1980’s. Whenever I saw him there was always a big smile and booming laugh. You will be missed by many. RIP Arthur. Sincere sympathy to you Velma and your family.
