Danny John Frei

November 14, 1946 - April 6, 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Danny Frei who died peacefully on April 6, 2025, with his family at his side. Predeceased by his beloved wife Judith, Danny is survived by his two sons Brian (Lindsay) and David (Thelma), his five grandchildren who he loved dearly, Rohnan, Emrie, Natalia, Ethan and Madeline as well as his sister Bonnie, and brother Johnny.

Raised in Cobourg, Ontario and having lived more than fifty years as a resident of Grafton, Ontario, Danny was a well-known and respected member of the local community. After completing high school, Danny began teaching at Dale Road Senior Public School and continued teaching while completing his Bachelors Degree at Trent University, his Teaching Certificate at night school and while raising his two boys. For 32 years, “Mr. Frei” taught at Dale Road where he shared a love of science, outdoors and gymnastics to thousands of students.

An avid outdoorsman and sportsman, Danny spent large portions of his life in the wilderness or on the water canoeing, surrounded by the nature he shared so fully with his family and friends.

Danny particularly cherished the Dale Road Outers Club where he shared his passion for outdoor education with countless students, staff and parent volunteers throughout his entire career. Many will fondly remember their experiences on his Canoe Trips, October Camps, Winter Camps, Ski Days or weekends spent whitewater paddling.

In 1990, Danny acted as team manager for the Canadian Junior Whitewater Slalom Kayak Team, where the young athletes, including his own son Brian, traveled and competed at the Junior World Championships in Switzerland.

In his “retirement”, Danny combined his love of teaching and his passion for the outdoors to become a Hunter Safety and PAL course instructor. Through his efforts for more than 25 years, he introduced new generations to the sport of hunting and the safe and lawful use of firearms. Danny was also honored to be recognized as a Lifetime Member for his 35 years of service to the Northumberland Revolver and Pistol Club.

Right up until the end and despite his mobility severely diminished by Parkinson’s, Danny’s favourite moments were those spent in the outdoors with his grandchildren, or sharing stories of times so spent with friends and family.

Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, Friday April 18th from 2pm – 5pm and Saturday April 19th from 1pm – 2pm followed by a service at 2pm. Interment at Cobourg Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Danny requested that those willing please consider donating instead to Ducks Unlimited Canada, to support the preservation of wetlands, a cause that Danny fervently supported through his life.

The family wishes to thank his neighbours, the staff at Landmark, as well as the palliative care staff at the Northumberland Hills Hospital for the care and support that Danny received.

Brian, David and families, my sincere condolences. I have such fond memories of both your parents, Danny and Judith. Your dad was my teacher at Dale Road, he encouraged me to run for student council and I participated in many outdoor camping activities including winter camp and the canoe trip. I remember going skiing with him and your grandpa many times. Also fondly remember being both of your babysitter when your parents would go out to movie night. Although it been years since we have seen each other I have fond memories and hope that you will cherish your love and memories of your dad. He was a wonderful person and so supportive of so many. A life well lived.

Keith & Monica Long - April 13, 2025

To: Brian, David & Families, and all Frei Families, we are very sorry to hear about Danny's passing. Please know that we share in your loss & sorrow, and our thoughts & prayers are with all of you. May all the fond & beautiful memories that you have of Danny live in your hearts forever and may they help you through these sad & difficult days. We have known Danny for many years as we were all part of the original founding members of the Ducks Unlimited (DU) Northumberland Chapter (in Cobourg), in the mid 1980's, along with Clayton Drury, Jack Graham & Lloyd Libke as President. We did many years of annual Fund Raising Dinners-Auctions for the conservation & preservation of wetland waterfowl habitats in Ontario, Canada. Danny was also an active member of Safari International (Canada Chapter) & he served on the fund raising committee for many years. Danny loved the outdoors and loved hunting .. in particular, duck hunting, which he & Keith did together for many years. They would sit in the duck blind, drink lots of coffee and have a good chat. "Thank you, Danny, for all the great memories .. you will be missed".

Leslie Orpana & Steve Gleason - April 13, 2025

So sorry for the loss of your brother, Bonnie.

Hans Larsson - April 13, 2025

Our condolences to the Frei family. I first met Danny as my grade 8 science teacher. He was one of the most effective public school teachers I knew - I still remember most of his classes. His dedication to outdoor extracurricular events with Dale Road students was extraordinary. October camp and canoe trips were rights of passage for many of us. In later years my kids would call him Grandpa Danny, piling onto his lap to listen to him read stories and learn some of the same outdoor skills from him I did. For years we would all enjoy the huge family and friends gatherings at the cabin. He will be missed by many.

Rick and Shirley McBride - April 13, 2025

So sorry to hear of your loved ones passing. Had him as science teacher at Dale Road. Truly a great leader.

Peter Ormerod - April 13, 2025

Danny and I were best friends when we were children . Danny , Gary and David Jones , sometimes Phil Keeler and David Nash would spend hours of every day tramping the woods around Ontario Street building forts, or imaginary hunts , or just simply Cowboys and Indians . We spent many hours on hikes farther afield and bicycle rides to Gores Landing to swim . Sometimes even made the trip twice in one day. I have missed his company for many years and am sorry I never got to say good bye. Condolences to his family and sister Bonnie.

Ursula Novellas - April 13, 2025

Our condolences to Danny’s family. I was fortunate to have Danny as my science teacher at Dale Road school. My children also had him as their teacher at Dale Road. As parents Ray and I joined Danny with other school staff and parents for overnight camping at Dr Wilson’s property for a few years. Later on I was fortunate to work at Dale Road School and reconnect with Danny for a couple more overnight camps. It was such a great way to give students an outside adventure I am sure most never forgot. I will always remember Danny’s great laugh. Thank you Danny for sharing your gift of the outdoors with so many others.

Kathy Thompson - April 12, 2025

Brian and David, I remember your dad coming to my parents house many times during the summer of 1968. Your mom, was my cousin and was staying with us to help my mom with my baby brother after mom had surgery, and your dad would come to pick her up for dates. He’d often give me rides on his little motorcycle or in his “ beautiful mustang”. Judy would always tell him he was going too fast in that car, but I loved it. Condolences to you both and to your families

Frank Quinn - April 12, 2025

To the families of Mr. Frei. (Danny) I am so sorry for your loss. Mr Frei was my most favourite teacher going thru school. Danny was my grade 8 science teacher at Dale Road. A teacher that treated all students with respect ( if deserved) and a teacher you wanted to perform for. From dissecting frogs to going on class ski trips he always made it interesting and fun. He would have me help with ski instruction which made you feel good. He was such a great person that I’ve often thought of over the last 55 years, and will never forget! Rest easy Mr. Frei.

I am so sorry to read this news. I first met Danny and Judy skiing at Northumberland Ski club. Judy, myself and two other very young women competed in different races there. I then had Danny as a science Teacher at Dale Road. He really was one of the few teachers I connected with. I remember when Judy passed away so suddenly. That was so sad. I moved to Grafton and spoke with Danny several times. I called him "Danny" but Mr. Frei would have come a lot easier. He was good man and lived a good life.

Lisa Bates - April 12, 2025

Michelle MacDonald - April 12, 2025

Very sad to hear this news and sending my deepest condolences to his family. I will always remember Mr. Frei as one of the best teachers I ever had. Although I will never enjoy a frog dissection! he made science and geography fun and engaging. He was firm, funny and kind while providing his students with so many opportunities to learn skills outside of the classroom. Personally, I remember his dedication to coaching our gymnastics club, ski club and giving me the opportunity to experience my first overnight canoe trip and portage. My love for this type of adventure stuck and I will always remember him fondly for that. Rest in peace, Mr. Frei.

So sorry to learn of Danny's passing. He will certainly be missed by family and friends. We used to ride the same bus to CDCI West together (back in the 60's) and I still remember the day I said to him on the bus, "Congratulations!" and his immediate response was, "Who told you?" to which I answered, "You just did!" He had asked Judy to marry him the night before. I was sworn to secrecy of course. We had many good times together. I will miss you my friend.

A very special man to many. How blessed was I to be able to spend many wonderful moments together. He was always my biggest cheerleader. I learned so much from Danny long after I left his classroom. He was wise beyond his years, always a story to tell and willing to help at any moment. I will forever hear his loud wake up calls “Daylight in the Swamp” and see his gentle warm smile around the campfire. May you find strength Brian, David and families in the stories being shared at such a difficult time. He was so proud of his family and loved each of you fiercely.

Merna (Moore) Zahn - April 11, 2025

I met Mr. Frei during my 2 years at Dale Road Public School. Those were the days when teachers were able to expose students to great adventures! I remember being disappointed in Grade 7 when I did not make the list for the Fall Camping trip but was happy to see I would be joining the canoe trip later in the year. The laps we swam in the outdoor YMCA pool to prove our strength in swimming! The canoe trip was topped by Grade 7 and 8 Winter Camping trips. You wonder why there was room left in those 2 trips. Mr. Frei said we would be nice and warm sleeping in the lean-to, cozy as bugs in a rug he said and we foolishly believed. 😊 Those were great times filled with fun and many great memories. Thank you Mr. Frei for helping to fill my memories with those great adventures. Thank you for giving up your time for us! Bonnie, Johnny, Brian and David, My condolences on your great loss. May your numerous wonderful memories help to carry you through this time.
