Joanne Thom (Chartrand) was born on July 11th, 1951, in Cobourg, Ontario. She was the beloved daughter of Joe Chartrand and Thelma (Beale), both war veterans and respected members of their community. Joanne grew up alongside her sister Janice (Sherwin), forming bonds rooted in love, laughter, and shared memories that lasted a lifetime.
It was in Cobourg that Joanne met her loving husband of 50 years Richard Thom. Soon after Joanne took on the role of loving mother to Stuart and Jessica (Shane). Whom she taught the value of kindness, the importance of integrity, inclusion of others and the power of showing up — no matter how hard the day. Joanne was a constant presence in her children’s lives and education — often seen dropping them off at school in the morning, only to be spotted later helping in the office or volunteering on field trips and at school events.
Soon after moving to Dunbarton Village in Pickering, Joanne quickly became an integral part of the neighborhood, forming deep, lifelong friendships with the Gilson family (Marie, Bill, Billy, Charlene, and Michelle), Eileen Ingram, Brian & Doris Webb and Helen & Jack Patch. These relationships grew into an extended family, and the moments they shared became some of the most treasured in her life.
Joanne took pride in keeping a beautifully maintained home and was known for her talents as a bowler, excellent baker, skilled gardener, and craftsperson. Her generosity for others knew no bounds. Joanne was known for her laugh and ability to see fun in everything.
Her playful spirit shined brightest in the time she spent with her grandchildren — her beloved FaceTime buddies, Miller and Ellis — where laughter, stories, and silly moments were always on the menu.
Gone but never forgotten and in our hearts forever. She is now accompanied by her favourite four-legged companions: Maggie, Alex, Nelly, Biggles and Rufus.

What a wonderful lady. I have great memories of working together at the community lunch making egg salad sandwiches. She was a great teacher for me when I had to start eating gluten free. Thank you for being so nice.

Dear Stu, Very sorry for your loss in the passing of your mother. That was a beautiful tribute to your mother, and offered us a glimpse of a wonderful, and a life full of kindness and service she led. Our thoughts and prayers are with you in your time of sorrow. Heartfelt condolences to the Thom family.
Joanne volunteered at the Colborne Community Lunch Program a number of years back, along with Rick, which is where I first met her. Her quirky sense of humour and quick wit endeared her to many, including myself. Joanne’s courage and strength in the last few years were admirable She will be missed by many, I’m sure.
I would speak to Gloria briefly while she would walk passed my house while I walked my dogs. A very kind woman. My condolences to her husband Richard, family and friends. R. I. P.
While I never had the pleasure of meeting Joanne, I did have the pleasure of working with Stu. Joanne’s work as a mom is evident in her son. May her memory forever be for a blessing.
Sending condolences to all members of Joanne’s family.Thinking of you at this difficult time.
