Jeanne Louise Grol

February 16, 1930 - February 5, 2025

Our dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Jeanne Louise Grol, passed away peacefully at the age of 94, on the morning of February 5 2025, days before her 95th birthday.
Jeanne was the heart and soul of our family, a strong independent woman who had a passionate zest for life. She was known for her sense of humour, hearty laugh and vivid imagination. She enthralled us all with her story telling, especially of her childhood in Indonesia and the war years.
After the war, she came to the Netherlands as a refugee, where she met Bill and married. They immigrated to Canada and made a life together. Jeanne had a variety of jobs through her life, but found her true calling as a community health care provider in her later years. She could often be seen riding her much loved moped to clients’ homes throughout Colborne and surrounding area much to the consternation of Bill!
Jeanne embraced Canada whole heartedly and loved to explore her new country. She had a childlike wonder for the land that carried into her old age.
Jeanne was preceded in death by her husband Wilhelm (known as Bill) and son Conrad (Gabrielle).
She is survived by her eldest son Casey (Barb) and daughter Elizabeth (Brent)
Lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Casey, Anna, Jessica, Jennifer, Matt, Michael, Chris and Jordan, great grandchildren, Evelyn, Brianna, Jasper and Hannah
A special thank you to Joanne Ivatt, with her added support, Jeanne was able to stay in her home longer than what was otherwise possible.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Fosterbrooke and the wonderful staff who have done their best to provide comfort and care to Jeanne in the midst of challenging circumstances.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2025 from 1p.m.-4p.m. at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. Cobourg. A mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, February 17, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Grafton. The interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in the spring.
In lieu of flowers Jeanne requests donations be made to one of the following organizations:

We had known for a while that this day would come. It was time, and we should be thankful that tante Jeanne died peacefully in her sleep. Still, a little voice inside me whispers that she should have left with a big bang!—she was a formidable person, after all. This is how I picture her. Once upon a time, in a magical forest, stood a beautiful tree—tall and strong. She provided shelter, shade, and food to the birds, the bees and other animals of the forest. People would pass by, and everyone loved the tree, especially the children! Kids would run in circles around her, listening to magical stories told by the rustling of her leaves. They would climb her branches and feel safe in her embrace. The tree stood tall for many generations, surviving countless storms. She was struck by lightning and endured many hardships. Some branches broke off, and she began to lean—but the birds, animals, and people loved her all the same. Even as the other old trees in the forest began to fall and disappear, she remained standing, cherished by all. Then, one cold but sunny winter day, the tree cracked and slowly fell to the ground, he whole forest trembled from the enormous blow. The birds stopped singing, the bees stopped buzzing. And then it was quiet. Of course, it was bound to happen—she was old and weathered—but from that moment on, the forest felt just a little less magical. I have wonderful memories of tante Jeanne. We did not live in the same country but I feel I got to see her often. She laughed a lot - and really loud! Tante Jeanne always seemed so interested in us kids and the feeling was mutual. When the Welter sisters got together, they were so much fun!Although…if am honest as a teenager, they made me feel embarrased. I remember one day visiting the mummies in the church in Wiuwert. There were graves around the church and the sisters started reading - and criticizing - the words on the gravestones out loud, while laughing hysterically. And I tried to act af if I did not know them. As a student, I lived in Ontaria for a year and this is when I really got to know her. Tante Jeanne was always there for me, we had long heart-to-heart conversations about philosophy, family history, religion, politics and more. She was both a second mother and a friend. And we had fun, explosive fun! Playing Scrabble, going to a National Parc, engaging in weird conversations with perfect strangers, ….One day she called over a guy on a snowmobile to tell him he had to let me ride the thing. And he did, of course. Who could refuse her? When my kids were born, tante Jeanne summoned the fairies to bestow upon them unique, precious gifts: imagination, joy, wisdom.… And I feel those gifts were delivered. Tante Jeanne was the kind of person who could make you believe in fairies. She must have befriended them in the magical forest.

She was always ready to tell a story or joke and we had many a laugh when she would come into the post office to pick up a package. Sometimes, she would just come in to say hello or share a funny story. If you met Jeanne on the street, you could be sure you would be kept talking for awhile!!
