Marie Ann Vandewater passed away peacefully in Cobourg, Ontario at Ed’s House Hospice Care Centre, on January 25, 2025, with her family by her side.
Marie was born in Toronto on April 4, 1940, a first generation Canadian to her Lebanese-born parents Michael and Victoria Francis (nee George). She was predeceased by her sister Yvonne Tracz (the late Walter). She will be missed by her ‘honorary’ brother Jim George (Sandra).
She was predeceased by her husband of 33 years William Vandewater.
Marie is survived by her children Jackie Monahan (the late Greg Monahan) of Cobourg, Gwen West (Dave West) of Fenelon Falls, Thomas Bethell (Paula McGuigan) of Sydney, NS. and her eight grandchildren, Kenny Mayhew, Justin Monahan, David West, Christopher West, Brandon West, Thomas Bethell, Robert Bethell and Ramona Bethell, and her nine great-grandchildren.
She will also be missed and lovingly remembered by her life-long best friend of over 80 years, Stella Kwiecien.
We will all miss her quick wit and sense of humour.
In her early days, she learned to play the bagpipes at age 13, and marched in many parades in Toronto. She also danced and in time ran her own dance school. She was a loyal Toronto Maple Leafs fan, enjoyed her friends at the CCC Euchre groups, and was a lifetime fan of Englebert Humperdinck. She always looked forward to Thursday nights to watch her favourite program, Law and Order, SVU.
Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home 30 King St. E., Cobourg, on Friday January 31 from 9:00 – 10:15 am , followed by mass at St. Michael the Archangel Church 379 Division St., Cobourg, at 10:30 am. A Meal of Mercy will follow the mass service, at the Best Western Hotel, 930 Burnham Street at 12:00 pm.
We wish to express our appreciation for the kindness shown to our mother by both the doctors and nurses at the Cobourg Hospital Palliative Care unit, and the Palliative Care Team at Ed’s House.

Dear Jackie, So very sorry to hear of your mother’s passing. Condolences to you & your family.
Marie, there is a hole in our hearts today and we will miss you every single day going forward until we meet again. You were such a wonderful big sister to me and we shared so much growing up together. You were the strongest, bravest woman I have ever known and I am very proud to call you my honorary sister. Rest in peace, sweetheart. Love, Jim.
Farewell my friend - sleep in God’s loving arms. Thank you for the years we were fortunate to spend together - the laughter, the tears, the secrets. You will always be a part of my life. I will always love you. Until God unites us once again, it was my honor to say she was my best friend.
