It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Harry Edward Rous. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Ed passed away peacefully on January 8, 2025, at the age of 68.
Born in Brantford, Ontario in 1956, Ed grew up on a farm outside of Lynden, one of five children. He developed a strong work ethic and a love for games, growing up in a large family. As a young boy, he picked cucumbers and strawberries to save up for his first mini bike, igniting a passion for motorcycles and trail riding. When he was young, his life revolved around school, playing hockey, golf and baseball, as well as the accordion. Ed was especially close to his father, Harry, his mother, Sophie and his siblings Don, Mary, Bob and Richard.
A graduate of the University of Waterloo with a degree in Chemical Engineering, Ed was a proud Professional Engineer (PEO) who dedicated his career to the automotive industry in Detroit and Southern Ontario. His sharp mind and problem-solving skills were evident in his work, as well as in his passions for spreadsheets, coding and negotiating an excellent deal.
Beyond his professional achievements, Ed was a man of many passions. He was a lifelong lover of baseball and a skilled pitcher, renowned for his "dangerous riseball" that kept batters on their toes. One of his prize possessions was his enduro road & trail bike. He loved spending hours exploring any back road or trail in Northumberland County. In his later years, he embraced the joys of tennis, badminton, and pickleball. He loved games night – he was competitive and loved the bantering, laughter, company and conversation.
Above all, Ed cherished his family. He was the devoted husband of Karen (née Laidlaw) and a proud and devoted father to Lindsay (Dave), Colin (Brieanna), and Adrianne (Adam). His role as "Grandpa" to Orin and Nya brought him immense joy, and he treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren.
Ed will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His kind spirit, infectious laughter, and genuine love for life will forever be remembered. A celebration of life will be held on May 10th in Rockton, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be considered for Canadian Cancer Society, Diabetes Canada or Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre, where Ed spent his final days.
We are so sorry for your loss, Karen, and the loss to your children and extended family. Ed was such a fine man, who obviously loved you and your family so very much. We are honored to have known him. As his father-in-law, Ed embraced and welcomed Adam into your family, and for that we are always grateful. Adrianne and Adam have been blessed to have you two as a loving role model. We have donated to Ed’s Hospice House in honor of Ed. May he rest in peace.
Dear Karen, Lindsay, Colin, Adrianne and your extended family, We were saddened to read about your husband and father's passing. He was quite involved in many activities throughout his lifetime.
