Karl vom Dorff

November 27, 1978 - November 10, 2024

We are heartbroken and saddened to announce the passing of our wonderful son, father, brother and uncle, Karl vom Dorff. Karl passed away at Northumberland Hills Hospital in his 46th year on Sunday November 10, 2024 after a courageous fight to free himself from the ventilator.
He leaves behind his greatest joy in life, his daughter Ella as well as his loving parents Margaret and Bernd, his dear sister Monika, brother-in-law Mike and god-daughter/niece Maggie.
Born November 27, 1978 in Cobourg ON, he lived here most of his life. In 1997 he suffered a spinal cord injury that left him wheelchair dependent for the rest of his life. That didn't stop Karl from showing the world what he was made of.
In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology (Honours) and a Minor in German at Carleton University in Ottawa and settled back in Cobourg in his own Condo, opening up his own web design business and IT specialties: NUMBDESIGN.
He was diversely talented in so many different ways, especially music. Some will recall the Cobourg Song he wrote "One Way Track" when he ran for Cobourg Council in 2018. You can find it on You-Tube under his name and Cobourg Song. A brilliant piece of his talent where he put together the local video clips to his music for a fun and upbeat original by KvD.
He could fix and repair almost anything and humorously posted his work on Facebook with photos "Crip fixes Crap" Many of his friends acknowledged Karl as a worthy mentor and advisor, he could solve almost any dilemma.
Travelling and vacationing was always on top of Karl's mind. He has travelled on numerous family vacations before his accident but even after he became wheelchair dependent he enjoyed many holidays. His list of places he has been include, Germany, the Netherlands, Austria, Czech Republic, Belgium, Canary Islands, Jamaica, Aruba, Bahamas, Turks and Caicos and an Alaskan cruise.
Karl served on the Board Of Directors for Northumberland Standard Condo Corp 58 for 2 years. He also was the Chair for the Northumberland Accessibility Advisory Committee right up to his debilitating health tragedy last Feb 28, 2023.
He also received recognition for his volunteer work in website designs at not for profit businesses like Cobourg Daycare Inc. and Club Loreley in Oshawa.
Mostly, though Karl was an honest, generous loving person and he will be forever missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. Cobourg, ON K9A 1K7 on Saturday, November 16, 2024. Visitation from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Roman Catholic service at 2:00 PM with interment to follow at St. Michael's Cemetery. Friends and family will then be welcomed to a reception afterwards at MacCoubrey Funeral Home reception hall.
donations may be made to Spinal Cord Injury Ontario (SCIONTARIO) or any other organization of your choice. The family is very grateful to the ICU teams at NHH as well as PRHC and Toronto Western UHN

Dear Margaret, Bernie and family, I was saddened to hear about Karl’s passing. During our time together at Carleton University, there was music, laughter, and support, and those memories will stay with me forever. Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family during this incredibly difficult time. It was very nice to reconnect with Karl many years later at his condo in Cobourg. Karl and I chatted about accessible living, finances and life as a whole. I was very proud of him when he ran in the municipal election and it was always nice to see him play the keyboard with his band in university. He did not let his disability get in the way of dreaming big. He will be missed. Wishing you strength and comfort in the days ahead. With heartfelt sympathy, Yves

Karl, I can’t believe that your spirit and body have left our world at this time. I hoped that you would have come back to us. You were so full of life, generous with your time, and a great conversationalist to all. I’m glad to have you as a friend for the past 10 years, with chats & visiting your condo on 3rd floor, directly above from me. You were in seventh heaven on becoming a father to Ella, in 2022. At least you enjoyed your time with her until your accident. Your Mom & Dad have done an excellent job raising her since, and will continue to do so in your honour. I remember I our talks about your time on the board for the PHCHC, and the good programs you help with. You were always so kind to me, and i will pass that on to others. So very sorry that you will not be there to see. My condolences to your family and Ella.

I had the luck of being Karl's roommate at Carleton University for a semester in 2003. We had a great time, discussing about history, football (he made me a huge fan of Dortmund) and many other subjects while playing dominoes or drinking a beer. We even had a beer wall collection. He met with my other latinamerican friends and all of them enjoyed having a conversation with Karl and they even mentioned, "I hope I had a roommate as cool as Karl, you are really lucky". After that, we kept in touch quite often for over 20 years. I feel priviledged to have met such an excellent friend and human being. I believe Karl is a true example of perseverance, tenacity and resilience. He accomplished so many things that I consider himself an example of how to handle adversity and succeed. However, it was unfair that he continue suffering as he did for the last 21 months. He is now with the Lord. My deepest sympathies to all of Karl's family during this grieving process, it is a sad day, but at the same time a day to celebrate Karl's life and all those happy moments that you experienced along with him. Rest in peace my friend!

I still struggle with the fact that you’re not coming back. No more big smile rolling down the hall. You should be here. I’m so sorry all of your fight wasn’t enough. Your parents love you so much. I’ve hugged them for you. Thank you for being kind to me. I will remember you.

I met Karl at Carleton University in my first year. He was living with another wheelchair-bound friend of mine. We bonded over spinal cord injuries (my brother) and our common heritage. Karl was a kind, witty person, and over the years, we kept in touch, if sporadically. He led a full and adventurous life. I am so saddened to hear of his passing and am devastated for his young daughter, parents and family. Though we have not met, I carry your family in my prayers and extend my deepest sympathies to you all in your time of grief.

Although it has been a few decades since I last spoke to him, I can see from this loving and wonderfully written obituary that he led a very rich and fulfilling life. You always gave the best advice and taught me many things that I’ll never forget. Your brain, the most intelligent, and your determination to live the best life possible no matter what hardship you faced, will always be remembered. Ella will live on your legacy and you will be her angel and guiding light in this crazy world. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later Bump. ?❤️

My heart is broken. You all know how much I thought of this man...his courage, his humour, his willingness to live life as much as anyone. No words!!!!

Peter Brotherhood - November 12, 2024

I remember Karl and his sister, Monica from St. Secondary School. Karl and Monica are remembered as being bright and cheerful youth. I enjoyed having them as students. On afield trip in Washington, D.C., I heard about Karl,s devastating accident. I had to announce it to his friends who were equally devastated. Karl proved that one could led a full life despite his handicap. His determination to travel and volunteer to help others is so admirable. Karl, May you. Rest in peace Sincerely Peter Brotherhood
