Wade Gibson, loving husband to Marilyn, caring father to Shane (Nicole) and Adam (Andrea), and cherished grandfather to Callum, and recent step-grandfather to Ben and Sam, passed away peacefully at Port Hope Extendicare on October 29, 2024.
Wade was born on Amherst Island on August 8, 1939. Son of a commercial fisherman and one of 13 children, Wade had a childhood spent combing the beaches and generally avoiding chores. His brothers (Thomas, Andrew Junior, William, Robert, and Fred) and his sisters (Julia, Jenny, Mary, Susan, Cora, Hazel, and Marion) would all agree he was the spoiled one of the family. He left the island to pursue a career in teaching, a career that eventually brought him to Northumberland County. Wade spent many enjoyable years at Plainville Public School, and did turns at Thomas Gilbard PS, Burnham PS, and finally Dr. Hawkins PS. Retiring in 1993, Wade was able to travel, read, pursue his love of cooking, and occasionally visit a slot machine somewhere. More importantly, he was able to spend more time back on “his” island, visiting with family. Numerous evenings were spent playing cards and chatting with his siblings and the many people that called him “Uncle Wade”.
Being a grandfather to Callum made his life complete.
Wade’s life was full of family, good food, good friends, and laughter. He loved to hear a good story, but loved to tell his own whenever the opportunity arose. His stories of growing up on the island, his antics as a young man, the many students and colleagues he had over the years, and his prowess at euchre will live on as they are told and retold by those he leaves behind.
The family would like to thank the staff at Port Hope Extendicare for their care and companionship to Wade in these last few months.
Donations to the Alzheimer Society of Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland and Haliburton or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
Memorial Celebration to be held in the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre in Cobourg (30 King St. E) on Wednesday, November 6, 2024 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with words of remembrance at 6:30 p.m.

This announcement brings such sadness. Even though I only knew Wade for a few years in the educational setting ( plus a couple of lovely Christmas parties that he and Marilyn hosted) , I felt his warmth and great sense of humor always. Just a really wonderful man. To all of his family, I send heartfelt condolences.

I'm 4'11" lol. He always stopped to talk to me, and what a kind man and insightful he was. A fantastic listener and gave the best advice. He Will be missed. My condolences to his family and friends and all who knew and loved him as much as I did.
