Charles Raymond Gowland, also known as “Ray”, passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones at the Peterborough Hospital this past Monday, October 14th. At 87 years of age, Ray was the beloved husband of Nancy Gowland, eldest brother to Sandy and the late Mike Gowland, son of the late Mary and Allan Gowland, cherished father of Lynn and Leigh Gowland, devoted grandfather to Amy, Carol-Ann, Justan, Abby and Thomas Gowland. Ray was also a proud great-grandfather to Emma, Echo, Faith, Chloe and Ashton. He will be missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Ray loved and provided for his family throughout his entire life. He is fondly remembered for his devotion to the Eldorado in Port Hope and to General Motors, Oshawa as Lead Supervisor for over two decades. His strong leadership abilities were admirable to all. Ray was also an avid traveler, visiting several countries alongside his loving wife, Nancy. His favourite destinations included Australia, New Zealand, Africa and of course, Florida, where he and Nancy spent their winters with friends at “The Winds of St. Armands” community for 35 years.
Ray was a capable handyman, and was always willing to help others with projects. He was also a talented golfer and dedicated sports fan. He always cheered on the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Blue Jays and The Toronto Argonauts. Ray enjoyed playing euchre, eating butter tarts and spending time with his miniature poodle, Jax. Above all, Ray was known in his later years for his captivating stories about his time at General Motors, his childhood memories of Toronto and Garden Hill, but most of all, his childhood dog, Buster. He often provided long chats and wise advice to those who idolized him. He was a resilient, dependable, hardworking and wonderful man. We all learned something from Ray and wish him nothing but peace and rest in his final destination.
A visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E., in Cobourg on Sunday, October 20th, from 12pm - 1pm, followed by a funeral service.
