Her lifelong interest in Indigenous culture fueled her strong advocacy for improving their quality of life.

Alongside her husband Roy, Betty worked tirelessly through the Merchant Navy Association to secure recognition for Merchant Navy personnel as Veterans of the WW II, making them eligible for the same benefits as other branches. It was with profound sadness that I learned of the loss of my dear friend and colleague Betty. I extend my heartfelt sympathies to all her wonderful family especially the wonderful daughters and all the assorted Lovekins and Chandlers. You were all so important to Betty and had so many good times together. I'm sure you will find support with each other in this difficult time. Betty was a perfect supportive colleague for many years at Red Cross and I have so many fond memories of that time. She became a good friend as well, and we had some fun trips at Red Cross and good times with many of you in Cobourg. Her intelligence, and easy going good humour made her loved by so many. Her achievements were so many and she so well deserved all the recognition she received. She leaves behind so much good, and will be sorely missed.

To Sue Lovekin, and all the family of Mrs. Spry. Heather and I were sorry to hear of your mother's death Sue, and this will be significant transition for you and all of her extended family. While I did not have the pleasure to know her, you are obviously a reflection of a lifetime of her love for you. Her list of achievements in her long and productive life are an impressive reminder of the difference one person of great quality can make in the life of not just her family, but of the whole community.
