Around suppertime on Sunday September 29, Mom passed away peacefully surrounded by the love of her family. A true country woman of her time, mother, teacher, farmer, friend, community volunteer, United Church member, and the love of Doug’s life (deceased 2016). Her family learned the importance of respect, kindness, having fun, and community service through the way she lived her life. The outdoors and especially her vegetable and flower gardens were her joyful place where she fulfilled her creativity. Paula found every opportunity to teach a lesson about nature; taking young ones by the hand to learn about a flower; identify birds by their call; and plant seeds for a future harvest.
Paula was born in Pembrooke Ontario to Victor Earl Ives and Olive Mary Mills. The middle child of seven, she excelled at sports and formed close bonds with her siblings. During the depression she spent summers in Vernonville, Ontario with family friends Will and Edith Robson. When travelling to a neighbouring farm for eggs she met Doug Deviney, but it wasn’t until fifteen years later when he (as the school trustee), hired her to be the teacher at the local one room schoolhouse that she fell in love and married the gentleman farmer. Busy days of farming, family and church life carried the years away until Paula and Doug were able to take some time for themselves to travel the world, square dance and enjoy touring the roads in their MGB sports car (license plate GR8 FUN). They were married for 65 years.
Predeceased by her husband Doug (2016). Loving mother of Barb (Al Harnden), Joanne (Brian Connor), Jim ( Deb O’Rourke), Gina ( Ted Jackson), Laurie (Jim Martin). Proud Nana / Grandma of Erin Connor (Ben Sykes), Terry Connor, Jacob Deviney, Jordan Jackson (Jamie Hilditch), Mitchell Jackson (Vanessa Pietrantonio), Rachel Jackson, Hamish Deviney Martin, Cameron Deviney Martin and Elias Deviney Martin. Blessed great Grandmother to Bode Sykes and Ilah Jibb. Dear Sister of Janet Ingall (Roger) and sister in law Ruth Haig (Milton). Pre deceased by siblings, Hubert Ives ( Ruth), Helen Jarvis ( Ernie), Garruth Ives (June), Joan Mackinnon ( Bert), and Beverly Ives as well as sister-in-law Marion Sherwin (Gordon). Many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbours will miss her dearly.
Thank you to the staff at Legion Village who helped make the transition from the farm easier for Mom and Dad. Thank you to the PSWs, Nurses, and recreation staff of Extendicare Cobourg who saw the genuine woman through the dementia and cared for her with respect and kindness. Thank you to Gail Ferguson and Helen Stewart for their companionship during Mom’s time at Legion Village and Cobourg Extendicare. Mom enjoyed her outings and time she spent with both of these women.
Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home in Cobourg (30 King St. E) on Friday October 11, 2024 from 5 - 7 pm. The funeral will be held on Saturday October 12 at St. Andrew’s United Church Grafton at 1 p.m. with visitation at the church from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will follow at Vernonville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Vernonville Cemetery, for either the Heritage (building) or Cemetery fund, or the United Church Mission and Service Fund.
As Mom would say, C’est la vie.

To all of the Deviney siblings, I have so many wonderful memories of walking over the hill and down the lane to your old homestead. I still dream of it from time to time. Both your parents were always welcoming, busy as they were with all the farming activities. Both of my parents held yours in high regard, as friends and members of the community. You all come from good stock, as my father would say. I send my deepest condolences on your mother’s passing. I know she will be dearly missed by all who knew her. To everyone of the Deviney family our sincere condolences. I can hardly count all of the memories I have of Paula that have accumulated over the years of being a close neighbour, a babysitter, a strawberry picker adviser and a watchful eye of whatever i got into doing at the Deviney farm. Paula was my first and most rewarding egg customer as long as delivered on time and there were no broken eggs which at a young age could be quite a challenge!!! Honesty, diligence, sincerity and most of all being real in life is what I believe Paula taught to everyone she met in a subtle fashion. When I come down the laneway to plant or harvest she is still waving at me. ( maybe to slow the tractor down lol)

I was saddened to learn of Aunt Paula's passing, though the somber thoughts are softened by the many fond and joyful memories of her life intertwined with our family's. Aunt Paula was always a kind-hearted, family-oriented head of a fun-loving, active household of 5 children she managed, supported by her husband, Uncle Doug. Our family spent a lot of time over the years with visits to the Deviney farm helping out with some farm chores, spending time with our cousins, and cleaning up dishes -- we usually were there during meal times, often unannounced, but always warmly welcomed by Aunt Paula. She was in some ways a second mother to our family with all the time we spent there. We easily became part of their family, and they became part of ours. We will miss her and her kind spirit. We send our deepest condolences to the Deviney family.

For many years your Mom was my near neighbour. One day she asked me, "Were you ever in Pembroke?" When I replied that I was with my Dad who was preaching there Paula told me a story I remember well. "We were on our way to school and we passed some children playing in a sandbox. One little boy looked up at us and said 'hello". I asked, 'Who is that?' My friends said, "Murray"! I always wanted to ask you if that was you!" The last day your Mom was here she was being taken out in a wheelchair. I asked if they could wait just a moment and I put my battery-driven musical keyboard across the chair. Turning it on Paula played a beautiful song from memory. The years in-between were precious and I have so many fond memories. Just loved your Dad's blue MG (as in Murray Griffin). My Condolences and Prayers are with you all. Luv, Murray.
Dear Diviney Family. I extend my heartfelt condolences to All of you. I trust that your special memories will bring comfort and strength during this difficult journey. Take care! Brenda Leonard

I saddened to hear of the recent passing of my neighbor, Paula Deviney. After I bought a piece of land from Doug and Paula in 1989, where I eventually built my house and still reside today. My deepest condolences to Barb, Joanne, Jim, Gina and Laurie and to all the family members. May she rest in peace.

She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and all who knew her. All the family have so many wonderful memories to share and keep close to their hearts. Rest in peace sweet lady and fly with the angels.
It is with a heavy heart that read Aunt Paula’s obituary. I have so many happy memories from my childhood when we would visit the Deviny house on weekends and holidays and later during my summer school breaks after my parents bought a house a few km away from theirs. If you were at their house you had to pitch in - I learned how to milk a cow , drive a car off road , collect the bails of hay in August and help stack it in the barn for the livestocks winter feed, pick cucumbers every 3rd day for Bicks Pickles - #’s 1,2and 3 ( refers to the size of the cucumbers ) and having tomatoe fights with my cousin Jim . I would do it again in a heart beat . My condolences to my cousins .
Laurie, Jim and family. Our deepest condolences on the loss of your mother. Although she’s really not lost, she lives on in each of you. It is easy to see where you got your family values and love of the outdoors from. May she rest in peace and live on in your hearts.❤️🙏🫂
