Beverly Bateman passed away peacefully in hospital in Cobourg, Ontario, near her home in Port Hope, two years following the loss of Rick, her beloved husband of more than 60 years. Both are dearly missed by sons Ryon and Craig, and daughters-in-law Lucy and Jenny.
Born in Edmonton to Jack Marshall and Matilda Bassendowski, and sister to Gordon and Connie, Bev’s youth saw the family move across Canada several times, but she always considered herself a Prairie girl with deep roots in Alberta and Saskatchewan. She was a proud alumnus of Mount Allison University, serving as class of 1960 vice-president, having double majored in Literature and Fine Arts, and met her future husband there while they were students. After an adventurous time as a young stewardess, she and Rick made their home in the Montreal suburb of Beaconsfield to raise their family. They eventually moved to Newmarket, Ontario, before settling in their final home in Port Hope more than 35 years ago. Throughout her life, Bev maintained friendships with many old classmates, neighbours, friends and extended family.
A passionate genealogist who traced hundreds of family members throughout Canada, Scotland, Eastern Europe and around the world, she also enjoyed connecting with distant cousins and fellow genealogists, in particular her dear friend Morris Kay of Aberdeen.
With too many doctors, nurses and caregivers to name individually, Bev’s family extends their appreciation to all the healthcare workers in Port Hope, Cobourg and Kingston who assisted her in her final days, in particular Jayne Dennis, who was both a caregiver and friend. Special thanks to John Bristow for his continuing kindness and support. In lieu of flowers, family and friends are encouraged to make a donation to a cause of their choice in her memory.
So very sad to hear of the passing of Auntie Bev. Such an elegant, sharp and kind individual. My love and sincere condolences to Ryon, Craig, Lucy and Jenny.
Very saddened to lose Bev, my Canadian relatives contact person and pen pal of many years. Sorry we never got to meet. Sending love across the ocean to Bev’s family, Morris Kay Aberdeen, U.K.
