Our beloved mother passed away peacefully on the morning of September 17, 2024 at Northumberland Hills Hospital at the age of 94.
Loving wife of the late Victor, Mary leaves behind her five children, David (Janice), Gary (Debbie), Russ (Elaine), Ruth, and Donald (Gwen), grandchildren Jennifer, Kevin (Ashley), Lauren (Brian), John (Lorraine), Connor (Stephanie), Kristen, Colin (Riley), Grace (Nick) and Andrew (Lee), and great-grandchildren Callum, Cameron, Brooke, Brynlee and Caden, and her precious dog Rosie. Predeceased by her brothers Robert Milburn (Dale), Jack, and sister Margaret.
Mary was born in Glasgow, Scotland to John and Catherine Milburn and was raised in Sudbury Ontario, where she met her cherished husband Vic. Together between Sudbury and Belleville they raised their five children and following Vic’s retirement, moved to Barmston, England for seven years where they enjoyed travel and the English countryside. They returned to Canada in 1994 and settled in Cobourg.
Mary loved music and enjoyed singing and performing in local choir and theatre group productions. An avid reader and lover of history, she travelled to many countries to experience the various cultures the world had to offer. Mary enjoyed watercolour painting, playing bridge with friends, and socializing at the Palisades sharing stories and memories past.
Her legacy endures through the lasting impact she made on her loved ones and the many friends and neighbours fortunate enough to know her. As the heart of the Simonds family, we know that she will be with us in spirit at gatherings of the Simonds clan.
The family wishes to sincerely thank all the staff at the Palisades Retirement Residence for the wonderful care and kindness shown to our mother and to the nurses and doctors at Northumberland Hills Hospital for their compassion and care.
A private graveside service will be held by the family at the Heritage Cemetery of St. Peter on Friday, September 20th at 1pm. Friends are invited to share their memories with the family at a celebration of life at the Best Western Plus Cobourg Inn, Northumberland Room, 930 Burnham St, Cobourg, between 3pm and 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation or the Northumberland Humane Society would be welcomed by the family in Mary’s name. Please raise a glass in memory of a wonderful woman.

I met Mary when she was involved with Barnum House Museum. I lost track of her over the years but when I did know her, I always enjoyed her humour and enthusiasm for all things of heritage interest. My sympathies to her family.
God Bless Mary was absolutely adorable. She will never be forgotten ♥️ Sending my Prayers to all who knew her and my deepest condolances to the family. Rest in Peace Mary.
I have the fondest memories of both Mary & Molly? as I worked at Palisade Garden’s all through highschool. Forever one of my residents that still to this day holds a place in my heart? My condolences to her entire family, her smile & personality was simply infectious?

Russ and the Simonds family, Marty and I were so very sorry to hear of your mother Mary's passing this week and our sincere sympathy goes out to you, your brothers and sister and all the many grandchildren. Mary certainly had a very long and a very active and well travelled life, and we know you will have so many fond memories of those times to serve as a comfort during this time of loss.
Don, Gwen and Family: Our deepest condolences to all of you on your great loss. May the memories of the many great years you shared together be a source of peace and comfort to you all. Carolyn Dyer and Michel Mantha
I was lucky to meet your Mom about 3 years ago when I agreed to be a bartender at Palisades a couple of times a week for their happy hour. Your Mom was affectionately known by us as Red Wine Mary. She always had one glass of wine and usually sat in the corner near the bar. She really enjoyed listening to some well known Scottish songs and just being around the group. She was a lovely lady who always had a smile on her face and was an important part of the fabric of the home. My bar partner Pete and I will really miss her company . She was a grand lady indeed. We played a couple of tunes in her memory yesterday and raised our glasses in a fair well toast. We will think of her often .
David, Russ and Families: I was so sorry to hear of the passing of your Mum. Wow, what a life, 94 years old. Wasn't it great that the whole Simonds "clan" were able to get together for your Mum's birthday celebrations at the beach, what wonderful memories. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time. Hugs, Love, Cindy
Mary and Rosie were my next door neighbours at Palisades and what a gracious and kind neighbour she was.
Russ, Please accept our sincerest condolences on the death of your Mom. So glad that the family celebrated her birthday earlier at the beach in Cobourg which will remain as a wonderful celebration of her life to the entire family. She will be in your hearts forever! Virginia, Grant and Kelly Spence
