David Morrison Rogers

May 14, 1942 - July 20, 2024

Our family is deeply saddened to announce the death of David Morrison Rogers. After living with Parkinson’s Disease for 14 years, he passed away at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, Ontario on July 20, 2024, at the age of 82 years.
He was much loved and is sadly missed by his wife Jennifer (née Sutton), his daughter Jennifer Ingham and her husband Wayne, his daughter Emily Swanson and her husband Duff, and his grandchildren Paige and Evan Ingham, and Olivia Swanson.
David was the beloved son of E. Benjamin and Frances Rogers, whose diplomatic career shaped his early life. Born in Australia as a Canadian citizen, he spent his childhood in South America and Europe with carefree periods of suburban life in Ottawa. He had fond memories of his high school years as a boarder at St. Andrew’s College in Aurora, Ontario. After graduating with a degree in economics from St. Peter’s College in Oxford, England, he had a long career with CIL in Montreal and the Bank of Montreal in Toronto, followed by a move to the Northumberland Hills outside Cobourg in retirement. Throughout his life, he developed many and long-standing friendships.
David will be remembered for his wit and wonderful laugh, his gentle demeanor, his curious mind and pursuit of life-long learning, his many creative inventions, his woodworking talent and meticulous approach to all handiwork, his love of music, his performances in choirs and musical theatre, and above all his love for his family.
A celebration of life will take place at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg on Monday, July 29 from 1:00-3:00 pm, with words of remembrance by the family at 1:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Parkinson Canada or the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.

DONATION A memorial donation has been made to the St. Andrew’s College Foundation David and I go back almost seventy years to the fall of 1955 when we both arrived at St. Andrew’s College. Over the next six years we became the best of friends. He was a frequent weekend guest at our home in Toronto to the point that my Mum came to think of him as her second son. In 1959 we spent a glorious summer together touring Europe with his parents followed by a month-long holiday at the Canadian embassy in Ankara. He was an usher at my wedding and I was groom’s man for him. We gradually lost touch with one another when he was working in Montreal and I was in Toronto but I always looked forward to reconnecting at our annual SAC old boys’ gatherings. I don’t think I have ever known anyone with such a happy, cheerful, sunny disposition. It’s hard to believe that I won’ see him again. My heartfelt condolences to Jennifer and his family. Rest in peace my friend.

Jennifer and family, sorry to hear of David’s passing. Having worked for yourself and David throughout the years I feel like I got to know David quite well. He had such a calming nature but at the same time knew what he wanted. He was a pleasure to be around. My thoughts are with you. Chris Chidley

Gordon Watt - July 24, 2024

Jennifer and family, Joanne and I were sorry to learn of David's recent passing. David was a childhood friend of mine. When at St. Andrews he usually spent the Easter holidays with me at my parents' house while his father and mother were posted overseas. Joanne and I shall always remember David at dinnertime. His mother brought back from Peru a beautiful wooden bowl that she gave to my mother. It was used for salads until my mother died. Now we have it. In recent years, Joanne and I have followed a primarily Mediterranean diet. We shall think of David at dinner. Gordon Watt

My thoughts are with you Jennifer and family. I first met David on Piccadilly Avenue in Ottawa when he and I were about ten years old. He was a close and enduring friend of my brother's. One day his mother caught me ringing their door bell and running away, a favorite sport of ours. It was something she made sure I never did again. David and I were in the same class at boarding school near Toronto with our parents in diplomacy or international business respectively. Their long friendship created a sense of kinship between David and my siblings. Losing David feels like losing a brother. May he rest in peace. Tony Campbell

Mich Woodall - July 24, 2024

So sorry to hear that Uncle David passed, I know that we lost touch (my bad) but I still have great memories of visiting with him n Auntie Jennifer both in Toronto and in Cobourg. I especially used to enjoy seeing his ‘gadgets’ like the 3 legged table that could cope with any surface and not wobble! His dry wit will also always be remembered, rest easy Uncle David. Love Mich (Michelle as was)

ALAN BARTON - July 24, 2024

So sorry to hear that David has passed away. We met in 1962, when David lived in the room next door to me on the fourth floor of the accommodation block at St Peter's College, Oxford. David was a good neighbour to have, always friendly and charming. We were briefly re-acquainted a few years ago when David and Jennifer visited us in Parbold, Lancashire. It was so good to meet David again, and we have kept in touch since then. My thoughts are with Jennifer and the family.

To my sister Jennifer, Emily and Jennifer and their families, and also my sister Christine who I'm sure will also be feeling this loss terribly. Please know how much Jean and I share in your grief at this difficult time. I will always remember David for is kindness, his generosity, his genuine welcoming nature, his humour, that special laugh, his perfection and attention to detail in all his commitments - oh the list could go on and on. Even from across these miles I will miss my wonderful brother-in-law law. I probably never told him how much I admired him - but I wish I had. Love and condolences, Peter, Jean, Angela, Andrew and all family.

And just as important, we know he was loved by you, his children, his grandchildren, and his friends. We are sending you our most sincere condolences.

Rachel tilley - July 23, 2024

Uncle David, You were the kindest and most perceptive person you always seemed to understand I was shy of meeting people and helped me cope with it and made me feel so welcome and happy. Me and my family especially my mum (Janet) loved how happy you made auntie Jennifer and how welcome we always were visiting from the UK. We drank wine together and enjoyed the best company, I can’t believe I’ll never enjoy that again but am So glad I got to love you and spend so many amazing times and make so many memories with you even from living so far away, god bless and goodnight xxxx
