John Frederick Logan, Q.C.

December 8, 1927 - July 12, 2024

Our family is saddened to announce the death of our father John Frederick Logan, Q.C., at Cobourg, Ontario on July 12, 2024 in his 97th year.

John is survived by his sister Catherine Patricia Philp, his children Margaret Ann Logan, John Alexander Doran Logan and Janet Mary Logan, his step children Jennifer and Thom McKercher, Philip Grenfell and Al Liu, his son-in-law Randy Mokelky, grandchildren Margie Leggatt, David Mokelky, Samuel Mokelky, Rachel Mokelky, Ian McKercher, Daniel McKercher, Elliott Liu and five great grandchildren.

John was predeceased by his sister Margaret Fraser Logan (1937), his wife Margaret Doreen Logan (1985), his daughter Susan Elizabeth Mokelky (1995) and his wife Molly Elizabeth Logan (2010).

John was born in Lindsay, Ontario to Frederick Alexander Logan, M.D., and Florence Elizabeth Logan (nee Weir), R.N., on December 8, 1927.

John attended the University of Toronto Schools (UTS) while his father was the Superintendent of the Toronto General Hospital prior to his death in 1942. John graduated from Lindsay Collegiate Institute before moving to Toronto to attend the University of Toronto and Osgoode Hall Law School (Class of 1955).

John married his high school sweetheart Margaret Doreen Doran on April 24, 1954 and raised their four children in Toronto. John and Marg provided their children with a loving home with many opportunities and experiences.

John and Marg and Ken and Catherine Philp built a family cottage on Indian Point on Balsam Lake where they made wonderful memories with another of dad's lifelong Lindsay friends Dick Sylvester and his wife Dodie.

Uncle John was loved by Ken and Catherine's children Nancy and Steve Pelletier, John Philp and Sara Turner, Andy Philp and Paula Murphy and Margie Philp and Martin Mittelstaedt.

John was a great friend and brother-in-law to Margaret's brother Jim Doran and his wife Jacqui and his sister Dorothy and her husband Ed Eberle. He was a wonderful uncle to James, Gregory and Anne Doran, and Margie, Mary, Ted and David Eberle.

John's practised corporate and mining law his entire career with the law firm Holden Murdoch. John retired in 1991 as co-managing partner. He was well-regarded by his colleagues and treated the staff with respect.

But no life comes without hardship. Our father's life came to an abrupt change with the death of his beloved wife and best friend Marg on July 20, 1985. Her loss was profoundly felt by John and his children. With perseverance and fortitude, our father soldiered on with life on life's new terms.

After several years as a widower, John was fortunate to meet Molly Elizabeth Davis. They married on May 13, 1988 and started a new life together. John welcomed Molly's children Jennifer and Thom McKercher and Philip Grenfell into his family.

In retirement John and Molly moved to Warkworth, Ontario to their cherished home, Burncroft.

John and Margaret's daughter, Susan Mokelky, died on September 2, 1995 after years of mental health struggles. It was a devastating and life-changing loss.

After Susan died, John and Molly moved to Cobourg. They had a life full of family, friends and travel including many trips to Longboat Key, Florida, until Molly's sad passing on February 14, 2010.

John was blessed with a 25 year friendship with Cindy Davidson based on loyalty, trust and respect. John considered her family.

In recent years John enjoyed the fellowship of his coffee and golfing friends Al Rempel, Hugh Glennie and Dr. Tom Wilson. John enjoyed his travels with his companion Helen Perkins of Ottawa.

John enjoyed curling, tennis and golf throughout his lifetime.

During the pandemic, John and his condo floor-mates, Reba Smith, Nancy Biggar and Donna Wootton, supported one another, gathering together for meals most evenings over those challenging years. Their friendship meant the world to Dad.

John will be most remembered for his kindness, sense of humour, intelligence and perseverance. John's determination and strength in hard times was strongly influenced by the positive examples of his mother Florence and treasured sister Catherine. John’s admiration for his mother was enduring.

Our father recently proclaimed with gratitude, “It’s been a good life”. Hopefully John's friends and family can hold onto those comforting words in the upcoming days of grief and reflection.

Much appreciation and thanks must also be extended to the staff at Northumberland Hills Hospital and to his Flourish at Home caregivers. They were as fond of John as he was of them. We thank them for their warmth and compassion.

The funeral of John F. Logan, Q.C., will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East. Cobourg, Ontario on August 1, 2024 at 11am with a reception to follow in the Reception Centre.

Dad was a supporter of The Bridge Hospice, Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre and Northumberland Hills Hospital. He would be honoured if you would consider making a donation in his memory.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Dawn Bell Logan - August 3, 2024

It is always particularly sad to lose a senior member of a family like John Logan. Like so many, I remember his dry sense of humour and pleasant personality. During Bobcaygeon days we would go to Indian Point for evening visits at the Logan/Philp cottage and as one can imagine there was lots of banter and good conversation. Good memories for a life well lived.

Dear John and family. Rupika informed me of the sad news of your father’s passing. David’s heart is surely with you, as is mine, at this difficult time. He often spoke about your love and respect for your dad and it was wonderful to hear about this closeness. You were a good son to him. The obituary describes a very special human being. May the many good memories you and your family share help you get through this big loss.

Susan Eddy - July 25, 2024

John was that special kind of individual who made everyone who knew him happier and wiser. Ross and I were privileged to have enjoyed many memorable moments with John. When he and Ross had their regular lunches at the Mill Restaurant, they were known by the staff as Statler and Waldorf of Muppet fame...something that seemed to suit them perfectly! My deepest sympathy to all of John's family and friends. He will be missed by all who knew him. Susan

Mary Anne Rowlands - July 24, 2024

Dear Ann, John and Janet I am so sorry for your loss. He had such a remarkable way with the people he met. I mostly remember him with a twinkle in his eye and a ready chuckle on his face. John was one of the best!!! Thank you for your kindness, John, and may you know peace as you rest. Mary Anne Rowlands

What a wonderful tribute to special man. Your words stirred up so many memories that I have of Uncle John and his honoured place in the Fee family along with Catherine and of course Florence. I will always remember Uncle John for his kind manner and intelligent sense of humour. Ask Carol Ann to tell you about his Toast to the Bride speech at her wedding to Rudy on September 10, 1960. My mum Laurie always referred to John as the brother I always wanted. As a young boy I can remember vividly the laughter, living and loving between the Fee, Logan and Philp families. I offer my sincerest condolences for the loss of your father but I know that he will always be with you in spirit and kindness just as he always has been.

Amy Whitmore - July 18, 2024

I remember John from our earlier Bobcaygeon days, visits back and forth between the families and in particular Ann, my age. My mother always loved to tell the story about how she and John, cousins, were born just a few days apart in the same hospital to brothers, so there was a lot of confusion over which Dr. Logan had had a baby, and which baby. She and John kept in touch for years by phone. My mother always treasured that relationship, even after she was unable to keep up with the phone calls.

Alexander (Sandy) Logan - July 18, 2024

I will always remember John as a true gentleman of the finest British tradition. I enjoyed his sense of humour and admired his integrity and the importance of family. On a personal note, he helped me with my first home purchase in Toronto, guiding me with great patience through a process that at the time was frightening. He will always hold a special place in my heart. I will miss him deeply.

Jennifer Darrell - July 16, 2024

I met John through my husband, Rod, who was one of the Meet @ 66 coffee club guys. I enjoyed his subtle, quick wit and admired his perseverance through many challenges that I was aware of but it is obvious my knowledge only touched the surface of all he overcame. I was impressed when, as a widower, he held informal Christmas seasonal gatherings in his penthouse condo for, not just his coffee buddies, but their spouses as well. He was a gracious and most welcoming host, putting on a fine spread with the assistance of caterers. My deep sympathies to his large family. May you take comfort in sharing many memories of all John meant to you and hopefully recall of many of his humourous observations of life.

Jennifer and Pete - July 16, 2024
