Peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital on Sunday February 25th at the age of 81.
Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Edward and the devoted mother of Julie, John (Grace), Christopher (Adam) and Paul. She was the proud Grandmother of Madeleine (Kate) and “Aunt Marg” to many nieces, nephews, and their families. She will be lovingly remembered by the Teskey family and many neighbours and friends.
Margaret loved and treasured her family and friends. She was a kind spirit with a huge heart who loved to laugh.
Born and raised on the family farm (Maple Tree Farm) on Telephone Road north of Colborne - she was a proud Canadian with Irish roots. During these years she developed her love of animals. In her youth she was known for always picking out the prized calf for the Fall fair. Margaret was a story teller. She loved telling stories. Some of her favourites were about growing up on the farm or the time she spent on her cousin’s farms.
She met, fell in love, and married Edward and together they had over 61 years of adventures. They raised their children in Cobourg and had a household with an open door where there was always someone stopping by. She loved living in Cobourg. Spending time with others and being active in the community were her passions.
She spent a lifetime working and volunteering with a multitude of organizations and initiatives in the area. Some of her favourite years working were as part of the team at Rebound Child and Youth Services.
She absolutely loved volunteering - always wanting to roll up her sleeves to help others feel welcome. She was driven by the philosophy and set the example - that if there was something you could do to help others - you did it - and you encouraged others to help too if they could. One of the causes closest to her heart was the volunteering she did with Northumberland Hills Hospital Palliative Care unit. And she also did the intake and coordination of new student volunteers that would work throughout the hospital.
For over 20 years she worked tirelessly as a PVNCC School Board trustee - helping expand facility access for local students, helping to expand services for students with special needs, and she helped to secure the approval and funding for the build of St Mary high school - eventually becoming the Chair Person of the School Board. She also played an active role as a member of the Ontario Health Board and Cobourg’s Police Services Board.
Margaret loved music and live theatre and the many years she spent as a member of Northumberland Players and as a Capital Theater volunteer. She was an avid fisherman who also enjoyed gardening, knitting, painting, crafting, golfing, watching baseball and hockey games, travelling, being a member of Probus and playing cards but most of all she loved having fun.
Cheers to you Mom. We will miss you dearly.
Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Sabatini, Dr Smith and Dr Xi for your compassionate care of our Mom. We would also like to thank the incredible staff and wonderful volunteers at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, countless other health care professionals in the area and Palisade Gardens staff for their care, kindness and support of our Mom.
Donations to the Northumberland Hills Hospital are welcome if so desired.
A private family celebration has already taken place.
My sincere condolences to Marg's family. I worked with her at Rebound and her passion for her family and this community shone through all she did. I woud run into her in the community now and then, hear her voice on the phone when she'd call in here and there. I wish her and Ed all the peace. Bless you all, Brandy
Julie, John, Chris and Paul. I just got a call from Alison Lester with the news. She needs me to sign something which I will do tomorrow. I will tell Beth and Kim immediately and want you to let your brood know how much your family’s kindness, and affection were so much a part of our life on Parkwood. I’ll send a proper tribute when I have time to collect my thoughts. She’s one of those larger than life people that bless us so seldom.

Marg absolutely loved her family & was so proud of her children. Never a conversation without sharing her happiness of family visits & accomplishments. Marg & Ed were a team, supporting each other in all their involvements . Their weekly calendars were full of where they were going & doing together, helping where ever they saw a need. She was the representative on the school board, the Police Services board, Rebound Child & Youth Services to name a few. Very sorry to read of Marg's passing. We met while volunteering at Capitol Theatre. One afternoon, after the patrons were seated, I was saying to Marg and Ed "I would like to have a garage sale but we can't have one where we live." Without missing a beat, in unison, Marg and Ed replied "You can use our driveway on King Street East." They added that if they were not home they would leave the door unlocked for us to help ourselves to any food or drink we needed. WOW! Such a kind, trusting couple to one and all.

Our family extends their most sincere condolences to the Godawa Family. I had the pleasure of working with John several years ago at GE/Complax/Budd Plastics in Cobourg. Through conversations, I realized John was the grandson of Mr. & Mrs. Charles McGuire. My grandfather Bill Theobald was a very good friend of Charley McGuire’s. Our Mom, Grace Chapman, had the pleasure of reacquainting with Marg in Feb/23 at Palisades. Mom was able to go & visit your Mom at Cobourg hospital, Jan/24. She too wishes to extend her sorrow in the loss of your Mother?
My sincere condolences and prayers for the Godawa family. I remember your mom's smile and good sense of humor.
To the children of Marg and Ed, we offer our sincerest condolences. Both of us went to Colborne High School with Marg, knew her during her years in the dental offices in Cobourg where our children were seen, and more recently worked with her on a number of projects at St. Mary's church in Grafton. She was a force to reckon with and made things happen. Both lived a full and caring life, reaching out to help others with humility, kindness and commitment. May they enjoy their eternity together.
Truly sorry for the loss of your mother, she was one of the people who made Cobourg a caring community to grow up in.
To all the Godawa family & especially Madeleine. (Your Grama was so proud of you, her favourite granddaughter.) I am so sorry for your loss. To the Godawa family. Sincere condolences on the passing of your mom. The number of commentaries here certainly demonstrates her importance in the lives of so many and in our community! I always remember that whenever I was scooting around the neighbourhood selling cookies or raffle tickets or whatever it was that your door was always open. Sometimes quite literally, and you'd hear your mom or dad shout from whatever part of the house they were in "Come on in!", even though they had no clue who it might be. That was who they were and they are loved and missed for that. Sending love and best wishes.
To John and the entire Godawa family please accept my sincere condolence. From what I remember of your mother, which is supported by the many written tributes here, there is a little doubt she was an exceptional lady and mother. From all the Barrett’s, her memory and legacy live on … RIP

She raised some beautiful, caring children.

Julie, John, Chris and last, but not least Paul. Im so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear mom. Marg and good ole Ed always made sure I felt as if I was home during all those early 80s sleepovers. Mom would announce that we were going to Godawas for a swim on those hot summer days, and my oh my, the joy and anticipation. All the while I thought JAWS was waiting for me in the deep end, mom and Marg were chatting away the afternoon. Truly a defining part of my childhood, and never to forget. Comforting to know those 2 friends are together again, with no more suffering.
My sympathy is extended to all of Marg's family and dear friends. I had the pleasure of working with Marg on the committee to assist a refugee family moving to our community. Marg was always a joy to visit with and I learned something new with each and every visit. What a wonderful kind soul your Mom was. She will be in my prayers.

Marg was such a great person, I worked with Marg at the NHH Auxiliary, she was always ready for a chat and a laugh. As a volunteer on Palliative Care, I enjoyed chatting with Marg on my shifts, right to the end she had a great sense of humour. Rest in Peace Marg, you will be missed.
Julie, John, Grace, Paul, Chris , Adam . I am sorry for the loss of your lovely Mother . Marg was the Queen ! She endlessly gave to her community. A wonderful lady to play cards with and have a chat. She lived life to the fullest . I will miss her smiling face and I know you will as well . Mother's are never forgotten ❤️
Paul, I am so sorry to hear of Mrs Godawa’s passing (I could never call her by her first name). She was such an influence in my life growing up. The friendship she had with Mom was admirable. I will always remember sitting in your TV room on Parkwood watching movies (multiple movies at a time) while Mom and Mrs Godawa sat in the kitchen drinking tea and talking. And talking. And talking. And talking, until Robert had to say “Well, I suppose….”. Hot summer days spent by and in your pool, with your Mom letting us make our own chips just to keep us occupied. Plain chips with ketchup are NOT ketchup chips, but plain chips with a bit of vinegar sprinkled over top were a suitable replacement for Salt and Vinegar if we ate them before they got soggy. The memories built with your family are some of my favourite and best memories, and I will carry them with me forever. Mrs Godawa brought my Mom a friendship that spanned decades and I am at peace knowing Mom has her best friend with her again. I hope they are laughing…..and talking and talking and talking.

Marg was a lovely lovely friend to everyone she met. She was kind, happy, always upbeat and positive and she was never without a humorous story- often about her childhood on the farm or her relatives in the Stoco area. I didn’t know Marg for a long time but soon after meeting her, came to feel that I had known her my entire life. My sincere condolences to her family as anyone who knew Marg will certainly feel her absence.

Truly sorry to hear the passing of a great person! Marg was my ‘Tawny Owl’ when I was a Girl Guide growing up in Cobourg and when I moved back after 30 years in Toronto she was one of the first people I ran into. Marg was everywhere and did everything it seemed! And she was calm and gracious and wonderful to be around. I know you’ll miss her - we all will - but the world is a better place for having had Marg in it!❤️
