Juliet Ann Mannock

March 6, 1932 - December 29, 2023

In Cobourg, Ontario, and Juliet wanted us to say, “after a happy life”.

Much loved sister to Caroline Webb, generous, loving aunt to nieces and nephews, Jessie, Ian, Sheila, Jane and Richard and ten great nephews and nieces and treasured friend to so many throughout her life. Predeceased by parents Patrick Mannock and Laura Whetter. When Juliet walked into a room you knew it. Bright, beautiful, literate, generous, and so dynamic with a measure of acerbic wit thrown in. Working a room is a catch phrase but Juliet did it with caring and kindness, easily conversant with each person she knew about their particular interests and skills. Juliet moved from London, England to Toronto and then to Cobourg after her retirement from a varied and challenging career including modelling, acting, counselling, sales and finally for many years as a researcher for the CBC. Never idle and never really retired, she then enjoyed turning her Cobourg home and property Into her “gardenesque” style with beautiful gardens, collages and vibrant colour inside and out. She created delightful pieces of jewellery and hand dyed silk scarves to give to friends. Juliet may no longer be with us in person but her spirit, love of life and impact will live on in so many of us who had the unforgettable experience of knowing her.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Julie Eckhart - August 25, 2024

So very sad to hear of Juliet's' passing. We were neighbours on Gertrude Place in Toronto. We lost touch when Juliet moved to Coburg and we moved to Vancouver. She was kind, generous and very funny. I had never had my own garden before and Juliet quickly took me in hand by helping to plan the garden and bring over many cuttings and plants that she had split. You could not ask for a better neighbour and friend. I sent condolences to her family.

Richard Longley - April 10, 2024

Apologies belated response. Just learned, with great sadness of the death of Juliet Mannock. Friend, colleague (for 21 years) at the CBC, essential recommender of books and authors; knowing Juliet, working with her, visiting her and her cats at home and in her garden - all fascinating - learning her gardening secrets from "Gardenesque", learning the latest target of her abundant "measure of acerbic wit" (walking on glass to avoid becoming one) was a sometimes dangerous delight. Beneath her quill-shooting porcupine armour, though, there was a timidity that inhibited Juliet from expressing the creative best of her undoubted genius. (Relic, perhaps, of a childhood that she described as challenging?) If she had, unleashed more of that creativity, regardless of the risks to her self-confidence, Juliet would have been explosive, in thermonuclear rather than firecracker proportions. They don't make women like Juliet any more. She is missed! PS Photo of Juliet smiling, is a surprise! Photo of her (taken in London in the 1950s or '60s?) with characteristic piercing gaze, startling but not surprising in its beauty.

Roberta Albert - February 2, 2024

Juliet, a neighbor and friend was instrumental in helping me establish a little gardening business, offering gardening tips and introducing me to future clients! We also enjoyed very competitive games of scrabble in those long winter months. I miss her strong spirit and many chats over cups of tea and delicious sponge cake she made for us to enjoy.

Gwen Hudson and Dan Hogan and family! - January 31, 2024

I will now treasure all our garden chats, cuttings shared and plants divided all the more. Wherever you are now; I truly hope there is a garden for you to putter about!

Hillary Newton - January 19, 2024

Ok, I didn’t say enough. I was the baker at the buttermilk for a couple years and riding my bike home every day past Juliet’s. The last time I spent with her she and I walked around the garden collecting a beautiful bouquet to take home.

Hillary Newton - January 19, 2024

I was pleased to have known Juliet. She touched all of us.

Pat Goodland - January 15, 2024

I worked with Juliet at CBC on Sunday Arts Entertainment. She and I shared a love of gardening and cats and a similar sense of humour. We went on several shoots together and had lots of laughs doing it. I visited her home in Toronto and later in Cobourg. She seemed happy there in retirement. I have a necklace that she made for me. I will always think of her when I wear it. I shall miss her. My condolences to her friends and family. She was a vibrant lady and had a good, interesting, long life. We were lucky to have known her.

Kaye Torrie - January 14, 2024

Juliet bought our little house after our family outgrew it. It was such a joy to drive or walk by and see how lovingly she kept it up. I do wish we'd gotten to know her better, clearly she had much to teach. My sympathy to all who loved her.

Nancy Archibald - January 14, 2024

I worked with and around Juliet at the CBC for many years and a funnier conversationalist in any circumstance would be hard to find. Juliet was pithy. I loved her garden in Gertrude Place, huge and beautifully surrounding her small house and I loved ‘gardenesque which appeared on my desk with irregularity and gave pleasure through advice and wonderful drawings.& She was special and thoughts of her will always be connected with flowers and funny, wicked observations on life and its inhabitants.

Liz Jenner - January 13, 2024

I knew Juliet for many years at CBC - and am sorry to say I lost touch with her after she moved to Cobourg. What a vivacious, smart, insightful and fun person! Always delightful to spend time with her, at work and socially, full of curiosity. Yes, she had an acerbic wit - but that was part of her alluring personality!

Julia Mustard - January 13, 2024

So very sad to read this news. What a wonderful spirited woman she was. I worked with Juliet for a year on a book and we forged a long friendship over many cups of tea and biscuits in her tiny, splendid English garden of her cottage on Maud Place. We shared a deep love of the world of images, photography, art and printed ephemera. Juliet later became friends with my mother, Binty, with whom she shared British roots and many commonalities. I recall her telling me of a magical tree that had been painted on the wall and ceiling over her bed in her childhood bedroom…early influence that perhaps cemented her love of the natural world. I loved her laugh, her riotous cynicism, her collages, creativity and colourful aesthetic. Farewell, dear Juliet…I am so thankful to have known you.

Robin Spencer - January 12, 2024

Juliet melded into our family like a great aunt full of wisdom, wit and humour. She engaged us all in intellectual discussions and we had many great laughs. I will miss her lively spirit, her quiet side talks and her grand presence. I am thankful she was part of our lives.

Miriam and Richard - January 10, 2024

We have truly delightful memories of the friendship Richard and I shared with Juliet, which started during our years in Toronto when we all rented apartments in the same huge house in Rosedale. I think she kept us in cakes and cookies for years. More amazingly - given my lack of talent - she even taught me to crochet, and painstakingly supervised me as I made a bed-sized blanket. It's still in use to this day. We kept in touch over the years by email and phone, and always enjoyed hearing Juliet's take on the world and its foibles. She was a most spirited lady throughout her entire life, come what may. We will miss her a lot. We send our sympathies to Caroline and Juliet's many nieces and nephews. Miriam and Richard

Frank Godfrey - January 8, 2024

Juliet often stopped by our place on Mathew St. I received stern lessons on growing roses, but she really did enjoy our garden, I think. What a person !

The "ancient of days" never forgave me for "that schwas word" at Probe. How I miss those days with you and Mike, Juliet. And we learned never to call you "Juliette." Rest in peace.

Katherine Commisso - January 4, 2024

Juliet was a wonderful woman. When I was much younger I had the privilege of spending time in Juliet’s garden with her, laughing and smiling, she truly was so at peace in her garden. She will be more than missed, she will be remembered and honoured. Thank you for being a friend Juliet. I love you.

Doug and Jill Lawrence - January 4, 2024

Dearest Juliet! An extrordinary and happy life you had, indeed. Of the many memories we shared over the years, conversations over the counter at our bakery are the ones we cherish most. You kept us on our toes and contributed greatly as an insider who was always a willing taste-tester and honest critic. We loved her! She gave us no choice really.

Jill Kinsella, Severen Rigo and Milo - January 3, 2024

We had the wonderful opportunity to develop a friendship with Juliet over the last two years. So creative, cheeky, witty, kind, sharp and chic. Loved spending time with her discussing life while tea-ing or having a G&T in her fabulous home, along with her feline companion, Lola. A truly remarkable and beautiful spirit who stayed true to herself right up until the end. You will be missed greatly, sweet Gardenesque.

Allan and Debbie Elder - January 3, 2024

Jennifer Darrell - January 3, 2024

Her loving obit captures so much of the Juliet I knew in her later years (after her move to Cobourg) and much of her life that I regret I did not know. |I also knew a woman who was never one to admit defeat, always ready to try something new (including "thugs", as she called them, from my country garden), not one to tolerate fools lightly and oh so proud. My deep sympathies to her sister Caroline and other family members and dear friends.

Mandy Howard - January 3, 2024

I had the distinct pleasure of being Juliet’s PSW for a short time before she moved out of her house. We always laughed and chatted throughout our visits. The first time I walked into her “1 of a kind house” she was amused by my Wow! What a great place! She certainly was unique! I will always treasure the chats and laughs we shared!
