After a brief illness John Joseph McLoughlin passed at the Northumberland Hills Hospital Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the age of 84 surrounded in the love of his family. Pre-deceased by his beloved wife Elizabeth “Lily” McLoughlin in 2017. Loved father to Alan (Darlene), Dermot (Julie), and Stephen. Cherished Grandad to Keith (Carley), Colleen (Ross), Shaun, Sarah, Dustin, Ashley (Eric), Makayla (Cory), Julia (Jared) Victoria (Jackson) and loved great-grandad to Clara, Avery, Jacob and Alexa. John will be missed by his siblings Dennis (Enda), Bridie (Tom) and Tom. Uncle to Derek and Glenn and brother-in-law to Patrick and Cathleen. John was an accomplished runner and soccer player, completing both the New York and Ottawa National Capital marathons which he trained for tirelessly. Over the years, his love of soccer never dimmed and he continued coaching children, passing on his knowledge, encouragement and love of the game. As a nature lover he could always be seen carefully tending his garden and flowers working hard to bring colour and beauty into his life. John McLoughlin had the heart of a hero, the hands of a farmer, and the soul of a cowboy. But above all else, he loved his family and we loved him. John McLoughlin, the kindest, gentlest and most generous of men. A Funeral Mass will take place at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, 379 Division Street, Cobourg ON, Saturday, December 30, 2023 at 10:00 AM followed by a reception at the Knights of Columbus 232 Spencer Street East, Cobourg ON. In the Spring, John will be laid to rest along side his wife Lily at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Covenant House Toronto.
Dear Alan, Dermot and Stephen, I was so sad to hear of your dad's passing. I remember him with fondness to be such a gentle and kind man. Sincere condolences to the McLoughlin family, relatives and friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
Dear Alan, Dermot, Stephen and families, I knew your Dad for 10 years. He was one of the kindest, most sincere people I have ever met. He really struggled after his darling Lily passed and whenever I would see him he would share stories and tell me how much he missed her every day. He also shared with me how much he loved you boys and his beautiful grandchildren. Your Dad truly was one of a kind and I personally will miss him. I'm sure that he'll have the biggest smile on his face when he finds Lily waiting to greet him. RIP John?? God Bless You all, Debbie Wannamaker
