It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald Edison Mouncey.
Don lived a rich and full life and fought for every tomorrow he could have. After being stationed in Germany while serving in the Canadian Army (1950 - 1953), Don began working at the Toronto Board of Education. He held many positions over the course of his 33 year career, eventually retiring as Chief Caretaker at Kew Beach Public School in 1986.
Post-retirement, Don influenced residents of local halfway houses where he worked as a Commissionaire. He was a lifelong member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Canadian Dragoons. A champion dart player, he continued to place in Senior’s tournaments as late as 1998. Euchre, cribbage, cooking, reading and completing crosswords & jigsaw puzzles were a few of his favourite pastimes. Seasonally, he loved to garden and fish. Don was a humanitarian who loved babies and befriended animals big and small. His kind and generous spirit has touched the lives of many over the years.
He will be particularly missed by the love of his life and wife of 67 years - Shirley (nee Scriver). Don is pre-deceased by his son Brian. Don’s love, teachings and kindness will be remembered and forever shared by his daughters Donna Schmitt (nee Mouncey) (Michael) and Cheryl Mouncey (Roger Armstrong). Don forged a special relationship with each of his grandchildren - Erik Schmitt (Camille Giffin), Julia Poyntz (nee Schmitt) (Blair) and Jaslyn Mouncey Park. He took pride in and loved each of them. It is Don’s hope that his great-grandchildren, Mya & Nolan Poyntz and Madeleine & Phoebe Schmitt, will carry on his legacy of kindness, generosity and curiosity.
Don wanted to give an especially huge thank you to Dr. Tirone David of Toronto General Hospital, whose life-saving surgical procedure brought 18 additional years that he would not have otherwise had. Don was grateful to Dr. David until his dying day, telling everyone who would listen of the Doctor’s greatness. Thank you to Dr. Reesor (Peterborough) who took care of Don for many years prior and since. Thank you
to the administration and wellness staff at Quinte Gardens and the responding paramedics who assisted him numerous times along this final journey.
Special acknowledgements and a thank-you go out to Dr. Lynch and her medical team at Belleville General Hospital - especially the amazing nursing teams who provided excellent care during Don’s recent stays in Towers 5 & 6. Thank you, Dr. Kaci Carter, for jumping in with both feet and working toward ongoing support. Thank you to the staff at Veterans Affairs Canada and to the Southeast Community Care team, who supported Don to remain out of hospital as much as possible.
Don was remembered in a private family service on December 9th, followed by cremation. A celebration of life will be planned in 2024, so that he may be honoured by the friends and extended family whose lives he influenced.
He had arms long and strong enough to embrace everyone and everything that he loved.
He had hands dextrous enough to fix anything.
Except our broken hearts.

R.I.P. Mr Mouncey! It was always a pleasure to be in your company
My condolences to Shirley and her family at this time. I remember both of them fondly when I would see them on Sundays for their morning swim at the YMCA.
We are saddened to hear of Uncle Don's passing. He was a "gentle" man and a gentleman and a great brother to Jim and Bet. Mike still remembers Don's return from overseas after leaving the army in 1953. He also has good memories of working with him during the summer. A great guy!

We only knew Don for a brief couple years when we moved in next door to him and Shirley. We enjoyed trading fresh garden veggies from his garden and us giving him treats that I enjoyed making. Both Don and Shirley are missed by Camile our granddaughter who would look forward to seeing regularly. We will especially miss seeing them both during summer months on their regular walks. I will always cherish the time we did get to know them. They are very special people who will always hold a special place in my heart.
