After a courageous five-year battle with cancer, John passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family on December 4, 2023 at the age of 76. Beloved husband of 44 years of Kathy (nee Mackell), cherished father of Jennifer and Maggie, and dear brother of Dr. Linda Hutton (Dr. Mike Grace.) Missed deeply by the extended Mackell and Grace families. Born in 1947 to Leonard and Phyllis, he spent his youth in Montreal and worked summers at Martin’s General Store in Highgate Springs, Vermont. A natural athlete, he played hockey into his seventies starting at his alma mater for the Loyola Warriors Hockey Team. From there he played for the East Coast Hockey League, the NHL Old Timers, Hockey for Heart Group, and weekly games at the Cobourg Community Centre after retirement from a career in Financial Services. John was known for his devotion to family, strong work ethic, and passion for sports. He will be remembered for his calm and steady presence, his perseverance, and his kindness. He never missed an opportunity to help someone. He did it often and without fanfare. He was a good and gentle man, a champion husband and father. A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King Street East, Cobourg, ON Thursday, December 8, 2023 . Visitation to be held from 12:00PM - 1:00PM, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1:00PM. An open mic period will be offered to guests who wish to share a brief memory during the service. Friends and family will then be welcomed to a reception. If desired, in lieu of flowers, please consider your favourite charity.

Our sincere condolences to the Hutton family. When I first met John at our pick up hockey right away I knew he was a very skilled player. So fast and smooth on his skates, great puck handler and playmaker. Enjoyed many conversations and stories. Will be greatly missed.
Kathy and family, I just wanted to let you know that I am so very loss for the loss of John. I'll always remember you owned the 2nd house on Platt Road. Come back to visit, see one more sunset, and let's raise a glass to a life well lived. My sincerest condolences.
John was such a great guy. Some amazing childhood memories with John and the girls. A true sports fan that got me into and brought me to my first ND football game. Saturday game time will always remind me of Mr. Hutton. Rest well John. You will be missed
Kathy, Jen and Maggie - I am sending you all the love, all the love I can imagine to comfort you in your sorrow. I hope you know that your dad/husband will be with you as you carry him in your heart, as you carry around with you all the memories you have of him.. People live on because they loved and because they were loved. People live on because they made a dent, had an impact in the world. Though your dad/husband is no longer with you in a physical form, I’m sure you already know he is with you in spirit, in your heart - forever. I remember how hard it was for Addy and Gabriel to lose their dad. And I guess the only thing I can say is talk about it with everyone and anyone, talk about him until your tears run dry each every and any time your grief tells you to. Talk about it until you find peace, until you are talked out and then each time rest there with him in this newest version of the bond you have with him. He will continue to have your back, your shared love will continue to guide and inspire you … All my love, Maureen
Our deepest sympathy, love & support are with you and your family today. John you will be missed, I have had the liberty of calling you a good friend. May we meet again.
John was a gentle man and a gentleman, always kind and curteous. He was especially proud of Jennifer and Maggie and talked of them often. He will be missed by all who knew him. My thoughts are with Kathy, Jennifer and Maggie who have lost their greatest supporter. Love Jackie
So sorry for your loss. I will always remember what a loyal fan of our elementary school sports teams John was, sitting on the bleachers reading his newspaper until the games started and he got coaching from the sidelines. You could tell how much he loved and was proud of Maggie. Sending condolences and love to all of you during this difficult time. Love Alison

My condolences to the Hutton family on the passing of John. Jocelyne & Jim Haggarty Denver, Colorado
Kathy, Maggie and Jennifer I am so very sorry to hear the news. I met John about a dozen years ago when we sold him tickets to a Notre Dame football game. He insisted upon buying us a beer and after a couple of hours we did get to the game in time and a cherished friendship had been born. I always looked forward to meeting up with John at games in the ensuing years. He was a delight and I will miss looking for that RUDY hat on campus.
We are so sorry to hear about John’s passing. We always enjoyed his smiling face coming into the office. We will greatly miss him. My heart goes out to you

Spent many hours on and off the ice with John before and during our days at Loyola. Good friend great teammate. Our condolences to the Hutton family.
I only met John 4 months ago and he has left a lasting impression on me. He was a kind and generous man whom I’m sure was respected by all that had the privilege of knowing him. He would come in every morning to buy his newspapers wearing plaid pants, sporting a gentle smile and always staying to share a few kind words. My heart goes out to all that knew him, and I wish his family nothing but comfort and strength in the days that follow.
Kathy, Jen and Maggie sorry to hear about John passing, please accept our condolences. Alison and Brad Dusto

I had the privilege of working with John for many years during some difficult times in the financial services sector. He was a consummate professional in every way - well respected even by those who did not necessarily always agree with him. He was a great contributor to our team and provided many with sound advice which made our institutions safer for depositors. Our sincerest condolences to Kathy, Maggie and Jennifer as well as his entire family and many friends.
John - You always made me feel welcome in your home and family and is something I will always appreciate. Thank you for the great conversation and beers over many hockey games. You were a calming spirit and true gentleman in every fashion. Rest in peace.

I met John at the CCC while playing pick up hockey. Early on it was quite evident that he was in a different league than most of us. His skating was excellent, his passes were crisp, and he possessed a great shot. He made everyone feel part of the game and would often impart hockey tips to me. I enjoyed his company and his willingness to treat everyone as equals. Sincere condolences to his family. John Walter Hutton January 14, 1947 - December 4, 2023 ~ REST IN PEACE ~
