John Walker Hayden

I will miss John greatly. He coached me in minor fastball back in the day and was a great role model. We were then on the opposite sides of the basketball court for years when John coached at Cobourg East, myself at Cobourg West. When the schools joined, John and I coached together for the last six years of my career, in boys and girls basketball. We both loved that young Ben was a regular presence on our bench beside his Grandpa. He was a true gentleman, good natured, kind and caring, and he will be missed by so many of his former students, players and colleagues. To Adrianna, John and Julia, Anna and I wish you comfort going forward and adjusting to life without John. We will miss him.

I met Mr. Hayden when I was 10 years old and a student at Burnham School. He was always kind and cared about his students. Basketball was a huge part of his life. In 1999 my children attended Terry Fox Public School. I was 33 at the time and soon found out that Mr. Hayden was a teacher at Terry Fox. My boys loved all sports, but Basketball was one of their favorite games. They both had the opportunity to have him as their Basketball coach. He taught them so many things on the court. I worked with John in the Cobourg Minor Soccer Club and the Lakeshore Minor Basketball League. He always had the best interests of the kids in the program. He took extra time to help children who were disadvantaged. John was one of the key people to start a Minor Basketball program in Cobourg.

There are a handful of boyhood friends who had profound and lasting impacts on the type of person I aspired to be, and John was one of them. He and Herman Jensen and I hung out together in public school days when I first arrived in Cobourg, and John even then struck me as the eptome of strength and goodness. He was a wicked softball pitcher. We went our separate ways and 60 years has passed since I last hung out with John. But I have never forgotten him and what his example taught be about true decency. Rest in peace, John.

Would like to extend my condolences to the family and friends. Mr. Hayden was a teacher of mine at Terry Fox back in the 2000s. If it wasn’t for him, I don’t think I would have even finished high school, let alone graduating college to then, fulfilling my dream of working in the medical field.. this world definitely lost a very kind, special, and amazing soul.

It is with great sadness that I learn of John's passing. I worked with him at Terry Fox PS. He was always kind and a mentor to all the students and staff. I had great respect for his work ethic and as an overall human being. He loved his basketball and spent many hours coaching the kids and taking them to Blue Jays games. Rest in peace John you earned you wings.

Dear Adriana, John and Julia - We are holding you close to our hearts at this difficult time. John was a huge presence throughout my own career as a teacher beginning with time spent with him at Dr. Hawkins. John's patience, guidance, experience and sense of humour made an indelible impact on me and I tried to model my own teaching and coaching after his style. When we would occasionally run into each other after his retirement it was fittingly in gyms as this is where I saw him especially shine. Mr. Hayden and I did pretty well all the sports like football, baseball , and Mr. Hayden's absolutely favorite Basketball. Helping being the ass. coach for the basketball team at terry Fox for one season, and got a chance at the end of the season to go to a Toronto Raptor Game with the whole team. Dear Adriana, John J, Julia and families - I am so sad to hear of John's passing. He was such a special man and we have all been privileged to have had him in our lives. John was our pitching coach for the Cobourg Angels in the 80's and early 90's. Starting in the gym in April through to September, he dedicated his time to our team (2 games, 1 practice a week and tournaments) while raising his own family. His patience and knowledge of the game enriched our team not only in wins but in personal growth. I reconnected with John recently when he was writing a story on his fellow Angel coaches - Again, giving of his time to enhance our sporting community. John was a special soul who touched many lives. You could always see that he would eventually coach once he finished playing. John was an intelligent and polite gentleman who always had a positive attitude. I am so very sorry to hear about John’s passing. As a colleague I was able to witness the ability John had to engage students and make everyone feel valued and capable. Dear Hayden family I was so saddened to read of John’s passing. Our friendship goes way back to the 50’s at Central school, not that we kept in touch but I always got the huge smile and hug whenever we met. Hometown kids seem to keep the closeness when they stay in Cobourg. John was one of the kindest, most compassionate gentlemen I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was at the head of the class in school and also way back on the pitchers mound. It was a pleasure knowing you all these years John, rest easy. Adriana and family. I was so saddened when I saw this notice. In my almost fifty years of officiating basketball I have easily worked with over a thousand coaches. John stood out as one of the most caring, sincere and respectful of all of them. No matter what happened in a game, how bad a call I made he never lost his composure. I do not even recall a harsh word. Just his big smile and his constant positive encouragement to all. John was a true gentleman. His passing is a real loss not only to his family, but the community as well.

Julia, John, mrs. Hayden and family, How sad I am to hear of his passing. Your dad and husband was my mentor. One of the best people I ever had the fortune of knowing and getting the chance to work with. I felt so privileged that I got to share in time with your amazing family because of my friendship with him and Julia. I became a teacher because of him and still have the letter of reference he wrote for me in 2007 because his opinion is one I valued more than most. He truly was salt of the earth and I know he will be with you all forever. Xo.

My sincere condolences to Adriana, John Justin and Julia. A compassionate, loving person,John will be sorely missed. My memories of John predate many of the condolences I have read. I remember John as a fearless, determined teammate on our championship softball teams. I remember travelling with John to Maple Leaf Gardens in the 60’s to watch the Beatles in concert. I have very fond memories teaching alongside John during my early teaching days. I learned a lot from him. He was a very caring person. I was able to reconnect with him later on when he coached my son basketball at CCI. My son appreciated his devotion to the sport and his kindness. You will be missed Mr. Hayden. My condolences to you and to your family, Adriana.

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Hayden's passing, such a great man. I fondly remembered him at the soccer fields as kids and was lucky enough to run into him out and about over the years. My sincere condolences to the family.

John was a special human. He cared about people. All people. He did not judge. He accepted. John listened, taught and showed kindness to those around him. My condolences to the family. I truly enjoyed having Mr. Hayden (John) as a teacher and coach at Grant Sine. John's love of the game of basketball was amazing and at the time we enjoyed the great Celtics vs Lakers rivalry. John even followed our basketball team on to high school to coach us for a year.

Many memories come to mind as our families continued to connect over the years, what with our children's activities at Burnham with J.J and Julia, and now with our grandchildren's friendship and sport's activities with Ben. Adriana and family, I have had the privilege of knowing John ever since his time at Terry Fox P.S. I, as well as many, admired him for his competency in his field, athletic talent and respect for others. To the Hayden family, I am deeply saddened to hear this news. I respected Mr. Hayden so very much. He was one of my Grade 8 teachers at Burnham. I recall one geography assignment where I had done particularly well and his lovely note on my assignment meant the world to me. I still have it and cherish his incredibly kind words. Adriana and family so sorry to read of Johns passing..knew him from his days at Grant Sine school and he taught all of our nephews and niece along with our son Jeremy who recently passed..he was a kind caring person and great teacher..always had time to stop and talk when we saw him around town…cherish his memories!
