On November 3, 2023 my fella Ken, Kenneth Vernon Stubbings, allowed his body to rest quietly and without suffering, with me by his side. He was 61.
Ken was born in Lindsay, Ontario on April 6, 1962. Not long after our marriage in 1985, we made Cobourg our adopted home and remained embedded in work, recreation, and community life here since that time.
Ken was a highly respected member of the Northumberland County staff for 35 years and 10 months (in Ken’s words). He rose to the position of Health Safety Emergency Risk Manager, a position he held for the past 20 years until his retirement at the end of 2022.
Ken was a master carver and an active member of the Northumberland Carvers for many years. His amazing works of art adorn the homes of many friends and family. As an accomplished runner, Ken completed 105 marathons (and several ultra marathons) breaking the challenging 3-hour barrier on many occasions. Carving and running were his two most significant passions. Ken was also an active volunteer in the community assisting with many Northumberland YMCA and running events. Ken never hesitated to lend a hand when he had spare time.
Ken was the devoted husband of Lynn, the “Papa” of Stinky (Pixie), loving son of the late Vernon and Betty Stubbings, cherished brother of Paul Lywood (Carrie), the late Linda (Peter Beer), and Cheryl (Wally Nugent). Lovingly remembered by the many in-laws, nieces, and nephews of the Stubbings and Perdue families.
Ken is dearly missed by all his work family at Northumberland County, fellow runners at the Northumberland Runners, fellow artists at Northumberland Carvers, and his many, many friends.
I offer my deepest gratitude for the incredible love, support and care from our family and friends. The medical team worked to provide Ken the best treatments and options. The compassion shown to both of our needs is appreciated beyond words. Dr. Mark Essak and Dr. Teresa Cheung have both given us so much comfort this year. They became so much more than our medical saviours; they became a part of our family. Their lead with his extraordinary care, coupled with Ken’s determination, allowed Ken and I to share precious quality time over the summer months.
Thank you, Ken. You were my person, my best friend, and the love of my life. It’s hard to imagine life without the guy I literally grew up with.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Ken’s life with me at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E., Cobourg, Ontario. There will be an evening visitation on Tuesday November 7, 2023, from 6 pm to 9 pm, and the Celebration of Life will be at the Funeral Home on Wednesday November 8, 2023 at 11 a.m. I invite you to dress casually, as you would when you visited Ken at any time. Reception will follow at the Funeral Home Reception Centre with interment at Lent’s Cemetery.
Donations to Northumberland Hills Hospital, Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice Care Centre, Cook’s School Day Care Inc, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Lastly, love your people deeply! It seems like just a short time ago that I was that 14 year old girl (almost 15) heading out on my first date with that handsome 17 year old. Now at more than 44 years together, he’s still my very best friend and I wonder where the time went. It’s not a lie when you hear there’s never enough time. Cherish every moment.
The service will be live streamed from this website.
Always so heartwarming to see Ken and Lynne as they were so much fun and we shared some good times together - at parties mostly related to the daycare - anytime I would run into them we always had such a good chat - all I can say Lynne is I hope that Ken is able to share some of those "special goodies" with wherever he is now - and just know whenever I see those treats, you both will always be in my heart - big big hugs to you Lynne - Hallie Gibson (from Collingwood) xoxoxo
Lynn, the Stubbings and the Perdues... my heartfelt sympathy on the loss of one so dear as Ken. I knew Ken from my days in H&S for the City of Toronto. He was an astute champion of safety practices, procedures and policies which made life more liveable for his work friends and colleagues. He openly shared his knowledge and visons with those of us who knew him from OHMSPA. May your memories of Ken brighten your darkest days...he's flying safely with the angels now. RIP Ken, your H&S friend, Chandra
This was a day shared at Lynn's with Karen and Rosemary. A cold somber day Heading to Lynn and Ken's We have a plan I would love it any other way. But this is how our day began. As we enter a beautiful driveway A comment is said "Well here we are"!! Then look at each other Gaze at the house From the car. As we enter, you feel welcome Although much silence Is all we hear. A faint "hello" But no one is there. I feel uneasy, As l tiptoe through This beautiful home Made just for two. We gather the photo books Each of us expressing An awwwwww And a sigh. Page by page We share an emotional look I feel a tear I wanna cry. Oh the stories These pages tell It's a LOVE STORY Displayed so well. It's hard to pick and choose We all have our favorite No choice is wrong We cannot loose. As we display the photos on boards For all to see. I am taken back How can this be? A life so perfect HE HAS HER!!! SHE HAS HE!!! I glance around the room My eyes full of gloss These treasures, these pleasures This is truly, an unbelievable loss. Stainglass, and his carvings A life shining through Oh my Lord What can l do? My eyes are focused On a corner cabinet Of figurines. Oh my heavens What a story So serene. Little Precious Moments Each a gift of love ❤️. Each unique as if the Lord created Precious moments from above. I Smile for the 1st time today. As l touch the cabinet glass. I suddenly feel a tear Then l ask? Why is that God's greatest gift The gift of Love ❤️ Hurts so bad ? When we have our Person Our life companion He's all l had. Then l am once more taken back To the Precious Moments Not only figurines PRECIOUS MOMENTS Are moments!! The best you've Ever seen. Remember your 1st Love ,first dance!! How he held you That shy loving glance. Remember your wedding day Joyful bliss A promise of Love ❤️ Sealed with a kiss. Oh Lynn, my heart goes out to you on the loss of Ken! It doesn't surprise me that his determination, which he brought to everything, marathons/ carving/quality/ care/safety etc gave him a bit more time to spend with you, the love of his life! I cherish him each season when we bring out the little father Christmas sleigh & reindeer which he selflessly donated, through a "guess my best average times of many fall marathons" to the Y's Strong Kids programme! I will think of him fondly and continue to carry his spirit forward in his honour. I am indeed thankful that you got to have 44 years together. And I am a better person for having known him!
My deepest condolences to Lynn and family. I was a running friend of Ken’s for many years and like many, lost touch unfortunately. But I will always remember Ken and his positive motivation and inspiration when we were marathon training and running together. Truly a fine person.
Lynn, so very sorry to hear of Ken’s passing, you’re in our thoughts at this difficult time

I am so sad to here the news of Ken's passing. I worked with him closely with emergency planning while I was employed with the County. He was so thorough with his preparation and execution of the mock exercises. The residents of Northumberland were in a better place with Ken's preparation. I have a hand carved stained glass wood frame he made in memory of my daughter which we will cherish forever. Dam Collins EMS Chief (retired)

Having lived in Cobourg all my life I have had many encounters with you both over the years through the Y, various sporting and other events.
