Doris Hynes

June 23, 1929 - October 16, 2023

Passed peacefully at the Golden Plough Lodge Monday, October, 16, 2023 at the age of 94. Doris’ family takes peace in knowing that awaiting her arrival in Heaven, was her beloved husband George Edward Hynes who passed in 1996. She is the cherished mother to Larry (Susan Bailey) Hynes, Nadine (Jon) Morris, Glen (Janet) Hynes and Bob (Angie) Hynes. Loved grandmother to Krista (Todd), Carey (Tara), Chantelle, Bradley, Daniel (Alex), Steven (Ashley), Kevin (Beckey), Brandon, Kira (Tom), Katrina (Cody), Cody, Ariel, and Jayce. Loved great grandmother to Dustin, Sawyer, Aleah, Luna, Eli, Natalie, Harley, Kinsey, Chelsea, Lincoln, Oliver, Kaleb, Evangeline, and Landon. Doris was very proud to be a great-great grandmother as well. She will be missed by her brother Bob and sister-in-law Helen. Pre-deceased by her parents Bertha and Arthur McCracken as well as her siblings Douglas and Eileen. Born and raised in Colborne, until her family moved to Cobourg. She attended the Cobourg Collegiate Institute (West as was only high school at the time). She met/married George Hynes in July 1948. In the early years she had several jobs at the Cobourg Canning Factory, Illahee Lodge, Dairy Queen, and finally and for a long time at General Foods/Kraft – 1969 until she retired in 1988. While at “The Foods” she helped the Activity Club plan and travelled on many bus trips (with or without George). At same time as working, she and George (who worked at Ontario Hospital) raised 4 children. Doris loved to entertain/FEED family and friends. Anytime, anyone would stop to visit on went the coffee/tea and a bite to eat. Many family meals (always including extended family) were prepared by her in the kitchen at their home on Bagot Street. Doris spent many hours’ playing cards both at home and at halls, Legions, VON. As well as going to Bingos, thanks goes to all who were generous enough to take her to these events, as Doris never had her driver’s license, but she’d repay them by paying their entry fee. She always wanted to pay her way. Even at the hospital she wanted to make sure she paid for her overnight she wanted her family to stop at the desk and pay before being discharged. After a short few weeks in the Legion Village, she was moved to the Blacklock Cottage at the Golden Plough where she spent the last years, again playing bingo, even as Dementia got worse and worse she’d continue to play. Doris loved to knit, so many sweaters and scarves. She never thought these items were worth or good enough to sell – but it was ok to give to family members. Sometimes family were given a sweater or two or three over the years – birthday gifts or just because. Over the years, Doris and the Hynes’ had many cats, dogs, canaries. The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to the staff at Golden Plough Lodge especially those in the Black Lock Cottage for all of their exceptional care and compassion towards Doris. A visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home Friday, October 27, 2023 from 12:00 – 1:00 PM with a service at 1:00 PM. Following the service Doris will be laid to rest at Cobourg Union Cemetery with her husband George. To those who wish to attend, a celebration of Doris’ life will be held at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Lounge following the burial. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Golden Plough Lodge or a charity of your choice.

One of life's undeniable truths...no one every left Aunt Doris' house hungry. I shared many meals with Uncle George and Aunt Doris as part of their extended family. I recall as a teenager witnessing Aunt Doris preparing her world famous gravy and questioned why she was pouring water into the gravy from one of the other pots on the stove. She proudly told me "I always add pea water in my gravy". Seeing my raised eyebrows, she clarified "Not PEE water...PEA water". This remained a standing joke between Aunt Doris and myself thereafter. Miss you Aunt Doris.

CRAIG MCCRACKEN - October 26, 2023

I am sure you all know how I felt and still feel about the whole Hynes / McCracken clan. I love you all very much. I think we were very fortunate to have each other and all the great memories from Bagot St, with Larry , Nadine, Glen, Bob, Bill, Gary, Eileen, Bob & Helen, my mom and dad, Maureen, Janine, George & Doris and of course Nan & Gramp, and all the extended family members once time went on and our families grew. ( I really hope I have not forgotten anyone.) Doris & George's place was always a very welcoming comfortable place to grow up and I was lucky enough to spend a lot of time there. It was indeed my Cobourg home. Doris was always very kind, not just to me but to all of her family and friends. It sounds cliche but it really is the end of an era. By the way does anyone have a vintage Honda 50 we could ride around in circles in the back yard? I will see you tomorrow. Good-bye Aunt Doris, with all my love, Craig McCracken

Aunt Doris was a sweetheart. At family gatherings she always prepared a feast for all of us. She always sat me at the couch side of the table. She knew that , as an under nourished, University student I would over eat and promptly fall on the couch , like a freshly nourished serpent ,and fall asleep following the feast. Loved that woman and all that she did for all of her family. Rest peacefully Aunt Doris. You have earned your place in Heaven.

I have fond memories of growing up at the Bagot Street home with Glen and the family. Doris made you feel right at home and part of the family. I enjoyed her statements about things, but the one I remember most was when they were doing some house updates and she asked " how far is it from the wall to the ceiling". Always makes me smile. My thoughts are with the family. John
