William James (Jim) Stirling passed away peacefully on August 14th, 2023 in Cobourg.
Jim was in his 99th year and lived each one of them to the fullest, right up to the end. Born in Hamilton in 1925 to Scottish parents, Jim lived a life of learning. After his participation in WWII as a Navigator with the British Navy in the Fleet Air Arm, he returned to Canada and continued his university education with a degree in Engineering Physics. Jim had a varied and full career with AMF Atomics selling destructive testing equipment, and then with Ontario Hydro at the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station, Westinghouse in Port Hope, and then on to teaching Physics at CDCI East in Cobourg. During his teaching years he took the family to the UK where he participated in a Teacher Exchange. After this, Jim felt the call of the Law which was when he returned to Queen’s University to not only complete his Bachelor of Education, but a Law Degree as well. He set up his new Law Practice in Cobourg with his beloved wife Marjorie. Upon retirement, both Jim and Marge immersed themselves in Cobourg, the city they loved, and spent their time with friends playing bridge, travelling, participating in Probus, and volunteering. Jim is survived by his three children Cathie (Morris), Robert (Judy) and Lisa (Steve), and his seven grandchildren, Lauren, Jeff (Carolyn), Kate, Tom (Sarah), Colin (Julia), Peter (Kristen) and Erin, and his three great-grandchildren Emerson, Elle and Avery.
A Celebration of Life will be held on September 16 from noon to 3 pm at the Columbus Community Centre, 232 Spencer Street E., Cobourg, ON.
In memory of Jim, donations to the wonderful Ed’s House Northumberland Hospice in Cobourg would be appreciated by the family.
Jim has been a friend of our family since his days in Queens Engineering. Jim and my dad, along with others, became lifelong friends. The group shifted in many ways over the years but ultimately stuck together. I got to know Jim a bit better in the last ten or so years of his life. He was very good at maintaining connections with people in Peterborough and Belleville and didn't seem to mind doing the drive to keep in touch. Jim was also an excellent host for anyone who dropped by in Cobourg, whether it was for cycling, bridge, or just a visit. Each visit included an update about Lisa, Cathy, and Rob and all the grandchildren and of your accomplishments. You were the apple(s) of his eye. May all your memories sustain you and even bring a little humour.

We are so sorry at hearing of Jim's passing. What a great loss to the whole community. We only knew him from bridge but his intelligence, zest for life, love of people and patience with us least knowledgeable players. When he entered the bridge room the atmosphere would change as he injected excitement and energy. He will be so missed Francine and Brian Birket

Condolences to the family from Peter B. ... being sent by one of his OLD time friends.
Dear Cathy, Rob, Lisa and families, I have still saved the messages from your dad that were on my answering machine when he and I were trying to touch base around his birthday, and before he went away to your cottage and to the lodge. I may save them for a long while as I love to hear him asking cheerily how things are up in Perth. We have had so many good conversations in the past year. His friendship with dad was indeed one of a kind . I will remember your dad so very fondly. He always expressed such pride and and love for all of his family. I send my deepest sympathy. Valerie

Jim and I met at a beginner's lawn bowling training class many years ago. When Jim hurt his shoulder and had to bowl with his other hand, he was still better than me. Even so, he treated me as if I would go on and be a champion at this sport! A wonderful, fun man to be around. Condolences to the family.
Truly a life well lived…. Many fond memories growing up with Rob and the family. Condolences to Lisa, Cathie and Rob.

So sorry to hear of the passing of William James Stirling. I met William and his family at Ste Anne’s Spa a few years ago and fell in love with the whole family. My Husband is William Joseph Stirling and my son is William John Stirling. We have lived in the cobourg area for 28 years and have come across this other WJS many times in conversation and finally got to meet him in person. Condolences to all the family
I have always felt honoured to be related to Jim Stirling. I knew him simply as uncle Jim. I always enjoyed visiting him and also why he came to visit us in Oshawa. Our Canada Day visits to Cobourg were amongst the best. You could discuss anything with him as he was so well versed on so many subjects, and he never backed down from giving you his opinion. Through any conversation I ever had with him there was always a laugh or a smile, he was so easy to talk to. Jim Stirling, uncle Jim was a man with great intestinal fortitude and I will miss him dearly. He truly is an angel who has earned his wings. Love Neil Carter

Jim touched so many people. He was a wonderful and accomplished family man who loved spending time anywhere and anytime with his children and grand children. We were fortunate to get to know Jim on his many trips to Muskoka. He shared advice, history and his views on life in general. His wisdom and humour will be missed. Our thoughts are with all of his family.
My dear Uncle Jim, how he will be missed! I am happy to say that I managed to chronicle some of the Stirling family history, but there were many more trips to Coburg not completed in order to document Jim’s vast repertoire of tales and Adventures So now we are the old ones, responsible for carrying on the wisdom and ancestral heritage My career path was much more similar to Uncle Jim’s than my own father’s Love Mary
We will miss Jim. Good tennis player. Our sympathies to the family
Such sad news. Jim lived a very full and long life. He was a man of many talents. Although we never had the pleasure of playing bridge with Jim, he was a formidable opponent. His sense of humour and great wit will be sorely missed. Condolences to his family. RIP Jim
Cathie, Robert, and Lisa, Jim led an amazing life! He was a Renaissance man. Always learning and living day by day with vim and vitality. He often inspired me when I would see him biking at an advanced age or at the library checking the Bridge results from the Toronto Star. He was such a sharp and witty man. He definitely had an impact on my life! William James Stirling July 31, 1925 - August 14, 2023 - REST IN PEACE -
Sorry to hear of your dad's passing. I ran into him earlier this year at the grocery store and I stopped to speak with him as he was our lawyer when we purchased our first home back in his early days of law. I remember him telling us that he had just recently become a lawyer; we were awestruck by that. He was a wonderful person and a great member of our community. My condolences.
We knew but were hoping to see him a few more times at the bridge club. Our sincere condolences he was a lovely person and incredible bridge payer lots of humor .M
Jim was one of those characters that you rarely meet in life: knowledgeable, witty, gentlemanly and kind. It was always fun to play bridge with or against him. We also shared a love of opera and I always enjoyed our chats after the screen productions at The Loft or the Capitol Theatre. He is a great loss to all who knew him. Sincere condolences to all his family.
It was a pleasure knowing and playing Bridge with Jim. He was much loved and admired. As a person he was a 7NT.

“Mr Stirling” was the quintessential teacher. Too good for many of us, including me. He fought earnestly to enrich us and was gratified if only a few appreciated him. Very interesting guy, nice man to the n’th. Condolences to his family. ?
A gentleman and a scholar and fun at tennis, both playing and between games.
To the family of Jim Stirling.... I was saddened to hear today of the death of my former colleague in the practice of law in Cobourg. Jim's broad accomplishments in so many varied and challenging fields speaks loudly of his love of continual learning, which he no doubt passed on to his school students and later to his fellow solicitors. I am sure that this never ending openness to learning something new and rising to that challenge is what kept him so active and involved throughout his life. I trust you will all a long lifetime of memories to comfort you in these difficult days.
My condolences to Jim’s family. He was a great inspiration to me as a student and a business man

Mr. Stirling was my grade 11 physics teacher. He had an incredible amount of patience and very unique ways of relating concepts to reality. Condolences to the family.
Catryn and I send our love Rob. I recall the times sitting in Jim's class when the 8:59 express would arrive. The look on his face time and again is a vivid and wonderful memory.
Just two weeks ago Jim gave me advice on how to best mind my tomato plants. It is somehow ironic that he passed on the 20th anniversary of all lights going out in Ontario. I will miss the light you shed, Jim.
An inspiration in life, remembering him will always bring a smile to my face.

Mr. Stirling was my grade 11 physics teacher. He may have been my home room teacher. He had a very affectionate nickname, Slide-rule Stirling as he taught us all how to use a slide-rule. RIP Mr. Stirling.
There is a hole in my life today; our darling and beloved Jim is no longer here to teach and inspire us. But I am not sad, rather I am happy that he was able to pass this earth in a dignified and peaceful manner. See you on the other side, Jim! Love, Margie ❤️
We only knew Jim from the last 13 years as the lovely neighbour round the corner, and I enjoyed a few glasses of wine on the deck while we solved the issues of the world. He will be missed in so many ways. RIP Jim.
