With much sadness, we are announcing the passing of Sally Elizabeth Bates. She was eighty-seven and lived life to the fullest during every one of those years.
The world was a whole lot brighter with her in it... it seems fitting that it is cloudy on the day of her death, June 27, 2023. Just over a week after she was admitted to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Palliative Care Unit. The family is very grateful for the warm and compassionate treatment she received there.
Sally was a caring mother of three, grandmother of five, and great-grandmother of four. She was a teacher for a time and then a fabulous school bus driver... she called that "the best job ever." She was a loving daughter, sister, niece, aunt, cousin and friend, but the most important role for Sally was to be the devoted partner for her husband of sixty-six years, Ron. She said she believed she was born to be his other half, and she did a beautiful job.
She asked not to have a formal funeral, but a special "Gathering for Sally" will be held at the end of July. Family and close friends will be given the details.
The loss of Sally will be felt by all of us lucky enough to have known her lovely spirit. That spirit will now live in our hearts as we remember her. And that is as it should be.

I’m so sorry for your loss Ron.
I had the honour of meeting the beautiful Sally Bates when her daughter Maria introduced us. Outside of the warmth she exuded, what stood out for me, is her great love and knowledge of birds. I was so impressed... as they would fly by, she would instantly know what kind of bird each was. This memory of Sally will always be close to my heart. My deepest condolences to the Bates family.
