Suzanne Challice

July 3, 1949 - May 27, 2023

Born July 1949, Sue passed away at home on May 27th 2023. The daughter of Orvale ‘Red’ and Jeanne Gravelle, she was raised as a RCAF kid, hopping from base to base with her large family. After Jeanne passed away, Phyllis Gravelle stepped in as a loving mother, and later grandmother. Family was a driving force in Suzanne’s life. After the death of her husband, Russell Challice, she raised 11 year old Christopher, and 8 year old James, on her own. She made time to visit both the Gravelles and Challices, making sure her kids got to know both families. In addition to her familial duties, she was also a veteran scouter, an artist, and Grade School teacher at St. Mary’s C.E.S Grafton. Her legacy is not only her sons, and her many beautiful paintings, but also the lessons and support she gave to children throughout the Northumberland region. She will be missed greatly, and the world is poorer for her passing. She rests with Red, Jeanne, Paul, and Becky Gravelle, as well as beloved husband Russell Challice. She leaves behind her mother Phyliss, her sons Christopher, and James, as well as her grandsons Tyler and Hudson. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Marge Allison - June 22, 2023

Dear Christopher, James, Phyliss and Family: I am truly sorry for your loss. I had not heard about Suzanne's passing earlier. She was a joy to work with at Wal-Mart. I loved the pictures she would show me, that she had completed. She was a very talented woman. She always made a point of saying "Hi!" when she came into the store. My condolences to all of you and your families.

Carmel Scott - June 15, 2023

I am shocked, yet again. Suzanne and my beloved Mom taught together in Grafton, at St. Mary's. Mom always spoke so highly of Suzanne and loved her so dearly, as Mom knew all of the tragedies poor Suzanne had faced. Rest in Peace, Suzanne. I just KNOW you and Mom are up there giggling away like crazy at each other. Just as you always did, here on Earth. Carmel Scott.

Lori Depaepe - June 15, 2023

My deepest sympathies on the passing of Sue. She was my oldest son's teacher at St. Mary's Grafton. I can't express how much I appreciated her kindness to my son, including coming to one of his birthday parties. She shared her love of art with him and was one of his biggest supporters. With the problems he had, he could not have done it without her help. I am so very sorry for your loss. She was a wonderful person.

Kathy and Mike Thompson - June 14, 2023

A dear friend, and neighbour. To dearly loved to ever be forgotten. You took me under your wing the first day I sent my daughter off to school, shared many coffees, introduced me to the worlds best shepherds pie I have ever had and also to “ Christmas meat pie”. We spent one whole summer teaching our kids to gamble ( rumoli we politely called it). My girls hoped for rain that summer so we could play in the afternoon as well as evening. So many lessons taught around your kitchen table. Your paintings hang in my home. You are hung in my heart. Love you

We always had something to talk about even for a couple minutes. She had such a wonderful personality and always made us smile. She was so proud and worried about Jamie going to the Ukraine. She was excited about moving to her Son’s. She will certainly be missed by all! Our prayers and thoughts are with her Family, Friends and all who called her “Mom”.

I first met Mrs Challice in Grade 5 at St Mary’s Elementary School in Grafton. I have so many core memories from being in her class. I loved her personality, her devotion to each and every student. Her laugh and smile were priceless. Her artwork was worth a million dollars in my eyes. She continued to help me spread my wings through out the school years. Always giving me advice, and a shoulder to cry on if needed. I also had the chance to work with her at our local Walmart. Still laughing. Smiling. always in a positive spirit. I remember her telling me please Allisha call me Sue. You no longer need to call me Mrs Challice. It was always so hard to call her sue but always answered to whichever I ended up greeting her with. Dear Family You are so blessed to have Sue as your mother/grandmother. I was a grade 6 teacher at St. Marys Grafton for 6 years. I transferred from another school to Sue's. Before transferring I visited the school. Sue and her praises for the school were the reason why I choose to transfer to that school. It was an honour and a privilege to teach with such a dedicated. If you are her sons. She loved you and was proud of you. If you are her grandchildren . She loved you too and waited a long time to be a grandmother. If you were one of her students. You were blessed in both faith and academics. It was a please to teach side by side with Sue Challice. Sending you my blessings and love. Go in peace. Go in faith. Go with Russell. Jackie Alls Grade St. Marys Grafton

Don and Mary Jones - June 5, 2023

Chris, Jamie and families… I got to know your dad Russell first as employees of General foods. This led to socializing with both him and Sue and some very fun times. Sue always had a big smile and great sense of humour. She was honest and authentic. Then there was the sports involvement when Chris and Jamie played with our two sons ball and hockey. Sue was one of the loudest fans cheering on her beloved sons. Although we lost touch over the years when we would meet up it was like no time was lost. Chris and Jamie know that she will be remembered fondly.
