Peacefully, at Northumberland Hills Hospital, Cobourg, on Friday, May 12, 2023, in her 86th year. Beloved wife of Gerald. Loving mother of Carmel (Bill) Scott, Dave (Desiree), Rodney (Angela), Robert (Susan), Sheryl (Kevin) Walt, and Paul (Vicki). Theresa was predeceased by her daughter Lynne on May 10, 2023. Cherished Grandmother of Andrew Scott, Tyler (Stephanie) Scott, Mitchell Scott, Alexandra Scott, Jamie (Joey) Paolini, Kristen Ferguson, Brookelyn Ferguson, Skylar Ferguson, Spencer Ferguson, Juliana Walt, Jordan Walt, Molly Ferguson and Colin Ferguson. Great grandmother of Lennox Scott. Much loved sister of the late John Burns (Monica), the late Edward Burns (the late Mary), Mary Howard (the late Jim), the late Kathleen McDuff (the late John), Alice (Karl) Collins, Jim (the late Marion) Burns, and Fran (Murray) Munro. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Theresa was a devoted school teacher with the Catholic school board in both Cobourg and Grafton. She enjoyed spending her summers in her beloved vegetable gardens and flower beds. Many were blessed to have experienced her as a teacher.
The family would like to thank the staff at Extendicare, Cobourg for their exceptional care over the last 8 years. The family would also like to send heartfelt thanks to the compassionate staff of the palliative care unit at Northumberland Hills Hospital.
A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 10:30 am, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Cobourg. Reception to follow at MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre, 30 King Street East, Cobourg. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

"Mrs. Ferguson" was a great teacher when I was in grade 5 at St. Mike's. Unfortunately for me, I only had her for half the year as she left to have baby number 4 or 5. Condolences to the Ferguson family for the loss of your wife, mother, and Lynne as well.
Condolences to all the family. I had the privilege of having " Mrs. Ferguson" for my grade 8 teacher and then many years later having nursed her as a patient. She was a strong and tolerant person with a great sense of humor.

A wonderful send-off to Theresa. The playing of the Bag Pipes, Holy Mass with comments by the celebrant directed to the family, and a reception fit for Theresa. We came to give you love and support.

I had the pleasure of knowing Theresa when I was an elementary student then later as a colleague at St. Mary’s in Grafton. I’ve always revered her for her practicality, fairness, kindness, and strong faith. She was a teacher to emulate- a beautiful soul. Sincerest condolences to the family. I wish to send condolences to all of the Burns Family. Theresa was such a ‘down to earth’ lady. She loved her students as they loved her. Her life was interrupted by that terrible stroke and I am sure that she was ready to go to be with her Heavenly Father . Having her daughter’s passing , Neither had to go alone. May they both find a wonderful resting place.

Dear Ferguson Family I am so sorry for the loss of your sister and now your mom. To loose your sister is devastating and then your mom 2 days later is just heart reaching. I want to let you know that I have you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Please lean on each other for comfort while going on with your journey. There will be times when you get a small fragrance smell of a perfume your mom and sister wore. Then a thought will pop into your head. Then you will be looking for something you have missed place. That is your mom and sister beside you letting you know that they are there watching, helping, and reminding you that even though you can't see them, they are here in spirit.

Mrs. Ferguson was my Gr 4 teacher at St. Michael's and I remember her as a no-nonsense, down to earth teacher. Probably because she was raising a brood at home, she extended that firm and loving guidance to me and all my classmates. May you all be comforted by the memories of happy times.

Theresa was the ultimate mom/teacher who was a class act in balancing work and home life!! She loved teaching life lessons that are so valuable in our troubled world!!
