Kenneth Wayne James Petrie

July 11, 1946 - April 14, 2023

Ken passed away at Northumberland Hills Hospital on Friday April 14th, 2023 in his 77th year. Predeceased by his father John Petrie, mother Mary Checkley and stepfather William Checkley. Ken was a loving brother of Jack Petrie (Jytta), whom he reunited with years later, betty De Vos (Frank), Gary Petrie (Louise), Mary Checkley Ainsworth, and Bill Checkley (Ray). Devoted uncle of Francois De Vos (Vicki), Michelle Silliphant (Paul), Scott Manley (Andrea), Josh Ainsworth and great uncle to Wes, Nolan and Ava. Ken was very active in the Cobourg Sports Community for many years and became Cobourg District Sports Hall of Fame inductee in 2020. Ken had a lifelong tenure of volunteering for the youth through baseball and hockey. You could always see him at the arena, ball park or bingo hall and most of the time he had a hearty hello and twinkle in his eye. The family would like to thank the whole staff of Hope Street Terrace in Port Hope for the past 11 years of excellent service they provided to Ken as he dealt with a debilitating disease of dementia. Friends are invited to call at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St., E., Cobourg on Friday April 21st from 12 noon – 1 pm., followed by words of remembrance at 1 pm. Interment in Cobourg Union Cemetery. If desired donations may be made to Cobourg Legion Minor Softball Association or Northumberland Minor Hockey Association.

Ken's passing brought back so many special memories when the central area kids gathered to play the seasonal sports of softball/baseball, touch football, basketball and ball hockey. Ken was always at the center of these activities as he organized games and mini tournaments. It was no surprise that Ken transferred his skills to serve in so many formal capacities in the sports community. His knowledge of fastball, baseball and hockey was deep and many very accomplished coaches had the good fortune to work with him. Ken left a huge legacy.

To Ken's Family: Please accept our condolences. The Town of Cobourg and all of Northumberland County has lost a wonderful and hard-working volunteer who contributed so much to baseball and hockey. Ken coached many baseball teams in Cobourg and Port Hope with Bill (including those of our sons Andrew and Michael). They became great friends (along with the late Dave Tredree) and enjoyed many lunches together, discussing the local teams, the Blue Jays, and the Petes. Our family still talks about Ken today and we will not soon forget him.

Roxane Brunette - April 19, 2023

Dear Mary I am so sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in the memories you all have of Ken. He had such a since of humor. You knew he was up to something when you seen that sparkle he had in his eye. When you run into him at the arena, and or the park or at the store, he had a smile that was contagious. He always took time out of his busy day to stop and say hello with his heart, not with his word. But he always sent you on your way with a word of wisdom. He was such a clever and smart man. He treated everyone he met or spoke to as an equall and with the utmost respect. He is a good soul. He is now coaching one of God's many teams. ?
