It is with heavy hearts the family of Terry McDermott announce his passing at Kingston General Hospital Saturday, April 1, 2023, at the age of 75. Terry fought a difficult but brief illness and passed peacefully surrounded by his family. He leaves behind his cherished wife Elaine McDermott (nee Parker) who he shared a wonderful marriage of 52 years with. Together, Terry and Elaine raised their two sons Brian (Joanne) McDermott and Mark (Stephanie) McDermott. Terry was immensely proud of his sons. He was the loved grandfather to Cameron, Matthew, and Cole. Brother to Rosemary (Peter) Munro and Christine (Randy) Appleby. Terry will be greatly missed by all his extended family and friends.
Terry had a distinguished career with the Ontario Provincial Police, retiring as a Staff Sergeant after twenty-nine and a half years of service. Terry served his community throughout life, coaching baseball and hockey, refereeing and serving 34 years as a member of the Cobourg Rotary Club.
Terry’s passion for sports has been passed down through his sons to his grandsons. Whether it be on the ice, at the ball diamond, and especially on the golf course, nothing made him happier than watching or participating with his grandsons.
In keeping with Terry’s wishes, a cocktail party celebrating a life well lived will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Dalewood Golf Club 7465 Dale Rd., Cobourg, Ontario from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Cornerstone Family Violence and Prevention Centre or Ed’s House Northumberland Care Centre.

Our many fond memories of Terry include enjoying watching him referee our children’s hockey games, and appreciating his instinctive reactions when authority and enforcement were called for at licensed community events such as RibFest and Waterfront Festival. Rotary volunteers were always glad he was there to take charge. Terry was always a good friend with kind words of encouragement. Elaine and family, we are thinking of you.

To Elaine and the entire McDermott family. I was saddened today to learn of Terry's passing. During my 35+ years in Cobourg, it was a pleasure to get to know Terry both personally and professionally. As a lawyer, I came to know Terry through his police work, where he was always some searching for a positive outcome for whatever challenge might have been on his plate, while maintaining the highest level of dedication to his job. Through the Rotary Club and other circumstances, I knew a man dedicated to the wider community and among the very first to say "I can help with that". In a job in which he must have experienced considerable pressure, he always had a smile and a positive attitude. This is a great loss to his community, and of course to his family.
Mark, Stephanie, and Cole, we are so sorry for your loss. We hope your memories of happy family times spent together will provide comfort to you all through this difficult time.
Elaine, Brian, Mark & Family, Terry will be so sadly missed. He is now playing Poker with Dan. RIP dear Friend
