Joan, I remember how dedicated Fred was to you and Heather and Gary. And he had enough love and dedication to give to his parents and sister and extended families. As a business teacher from the East I had occasion to see Fred at business meetings in our board. I always enjoyed our visits. He was supportive, helpful, had a great sense of humour and clearly cared about people. Sending condolences and prayers to his family.

My memories of high school are faint but one thing I know for sure is that Fred was a teacher that I could count on. He was the best. He was the guy who was a constant & we all could count on him to either make us laugh or provide a pat on the shoulder with some comforting words while we tried to survive our teenage years. Mr. Long was one of my favorite teachers, I’m so sad to hear of his passing. He brought so much life and enthusiasm to West High school students!

My sympathies to Mr. Long’s family. He was a former teacher of mine at C.D.C.I West. He was able to teach me math when previous attempts in my life failed. I remember his time on the radio and how good he was at broadcasting. Whenever I ran into him he took the time to speak and find out how my life was. The last time I saw him was when the West was closing and we had an opportunity to walk the halls one final time. We met each other again in the library - my favourite place. He was a kind and caring man who left a wonderful impression on me. My condolences to all.

I have many fond memories ranging from the weekends we spent together volunteering at CDCI West to expand West Radio by running wiring, attending his business and law classes and being entertained by Freddy and the Romantics. A band that perfectly embodied Fred's spirit. He positively impacted the lives of so many people with his unwavering enthusiasm and devotion to his family, students and community. Joan, Heather and Gary, So sorry to hear of your loss. Many wonderful memories of Fred. From a young age I always enjoyed the trips up to the cottage on the Trent river. Moving on through high school, it was a treat taking in a Leafs game during the Monday night visits with Fred and my dad. And... Who could forget the annual Christmas Eve Dinners. It was like we had our own version of Christmas Vacation. Condolences.

My condolences to the Mrs. Joan Long and the Long family. Of the teachers that taught me, Fred was one of the memorable ones always full of passion. He shared what a Chartered Accountant does. Thus I am grateful that he shared that with his class, as he formed by career.

I worked at CHUC for about 6 months in 2001 and 2002 and I produced Fred's commentaries during that time. Our conversations before and after recording often went longer than we intended, and I really enjoyed them. Condolences to his friends, family and former students.

My condolences to Mrs. Long and the entire Long family. Fred was a great teacher and also a mentor to many young people, in particular me. He recommended me for my first job in radio at CHUC in 1978. I was 17, and half way through grade 13. A guy quit on a Saturday and the program director called and asked if I could be in at 4 o’clock to pick the music and be on the air at 6. The first thing I did was read a 15 minute newscast. And almost 45 years later I’m still working in news. Before that, Fred and I ran all the wires and hung the speakers for the school radio station at the WEST. That’s how I learned the ropes before the job at CHUC. He made high school meaningful. And Fred was a really nice person. My sympathies. Ian

Fred and I were on the air at CHUC every weekday morning in the early 1980's. I was the morning guy, while Fred did his best to read a most decent newscast. We had FUN. We often would throw out the "raspberry of the day", which actually resulted in me getting a one day suspension. Larry Hall couldn't take a joke at the best of times. Fred was loved by all and I truly appreciated his professionalism and candor and love of life. Oddly enough, Fred's passing comes on the heels of another CHUC alum, Kent Matheson. This year is not starting out well, especially for those of us with cancer. To Fred's family, rest assured he is listening, talk to him as often as you want. And Fred says, there's always next year, Oh, that was about the Leafs.

I met Fred after he had retired, but more recently recall Saturday morning breakfasts with him and John; it was a joy to be invited to join them as they caught up on the weekly family matters. It was a sad day when Fred could no longer join us, but I was still updated on his state of health and the Long family happenings, again through John and Cheryl. I was sad to hear of Fred's passing, but his suffering is now over, and we can all enjoy all the happy memories we have of our interaction with him and the family. May he rest in peace.

Fred's family were my neighbors on Northwood Drive when I was much younger. I also had him for a teacher at C.D.C.I. West in the early 80's. Sad to learn of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family.

Fred was by far one of my favourite teachers! I loved his unique sense of humour and the energy he brought to the classroom. His passion for music also livened up the school. He will be missed. However his legend and but spirit will live on in those he thought and had the pleasure of knowing him!

I'm so sorry to hear of the passing of Fred. I have many, many fond memories of working with him (and a lot of goofing off with him!) at CFMX. My sincerest condolences to the family.

Fred always provided some interesting ways to win a poker hand at our events over the few short years that I knew him. Holding his cards till the last minute then displaying a really good combination of wild cards and others to take the pot. Although I did not know Fred beyond the times we were together playing cards, I could tell from our conversations that he was an interesting individual. My condolences to Joan and the family.

My God, you could not meet a nicer man. Fred impacted my life in many ways at many times. As a supply teacher, as a customer and more so as a friend. Joan, I am speechless. As always, I am here to help however I can. I was just saying to Cheryl that we should stop in and bring Tim's, but the would've, should've, could've will haunt me. Mr. Long was a memorable teacher of mine at CDCI West in the mid-1970s. I was not the most attentive student in my years at the West, yet in spite of my faults he always treated me with kindness and respect. So sad to read that Mr Long passed away, I could never bring myself to call him Fred even when he asked me to. As others have expressed, Mr Long was without a doubt the best teacher I had. But he was so much more than a teacher, he was a mentor, a friend & an exceptional community member. He is big reason I chose a lifelong career in business. He will be forever in my memory. Rest In Peace Mr Long.🙏

I am very sorry to hear of Mr. Long's passing. My sincerest condolences to the family. Mr. Long was a really fun teacher at the West HS and I enjoyed the radio station he led, his band and the sports that he helped coach. Many students benefited from the music, sports and conversations at school. Thank you Mr. Long, you will be fondly remembered.

My deepest sympathies to the family. I taught with Fred at Cobourg West Collegiate. There are many fond memories of Fred. He had a great sense of humour. He had an awesome radio voice and showed his love of music through "Freddy and the Romantics".
