On December 18, 2022, Raymond Feraday passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by family in his 96th year. Beloved husband of 65 years of the late Betty Feraday (nee Barratt), Ray was survived by his eight children, eighteen grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and his brother Gerald. A well-respected veteran Detective of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Force, Ray served and protected the public for 38 years in the heart of the city.
Well-read and self-educated, Ray worked hard from the age of 14 to help support his family in many different professions until he found his niche on the Police Force as an investigator.
As an athlete and mentor to many, Ray was a fitness advocate. A winning hockey coach of 52 Division while on the force, he enjoyed playing hockey right into his 84th year.
Ray was a Renaissance man who excelled at anything he put his effort to. With his beautiful multi-octave voice and perfect pitch, Ray was a much-loved member of the Saint Anthony's Choir and the Toronto Police Choir.
When he wasn't at work you could find him with his children coaching football, track, cross country, hockey, and boxing at St. Michael's high school, and city championship floor hockey and basketball at the local recreation centre. All the neighborhood children were welcome to participate and enjoy his mentorship.
In his retirement, he enjoyed a flare for writing and poetry. He composed over 2000 poems and penned three books of his memoirs.
Regardless of his many interests, Ray's real passion in life was his family. He was happiest in the presence of Betty and his Grandchildren. Ray will be dearly missed by all that knew him, but his legacy of love will live forever.
The Feraday family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to Saint Elizabeth Health Care for the care and compassion shown to Raymond and the family.

I got to know Ray Feraday through my friendship with Dan and it was always a pleasure to sit down and hear his views on sports and his stories. He left a memorable impression on all he met. I will miss our chats and seeing him at Varsity Blues football functions

Sincere condolences to the whole Feraday family. I met Ray while Dan and I were playing football at U of T and Ray was a constant positive presence at all of the games. Ray's cheery face and attitude would brighten all of our days. Ray continued to support his children as he was a frequent visitor to the Blues' golf day outings too, as usual, with the friendly attitude wanting to know what was happening in other peoples' lives. Ray, you were a great man, left a tremendous legacy through all your children and will be missed immensely. Rest in peace my friend.
Terry and I were very saddened to hear of the recent passing of Ray (aka Mr.Feraday). I first met Dan, Ray, and the rest of the Feraday clan in in the fall of 1977. Little did I know how my life would change as I had new friends and a supportive family for life. I knew Ray as a police officer, father, fitness enthusiast, hockey player and finally a friend. I certainly looked up to Ray and appreciated his knowledge and stories over the years. If you knew Ray, then you certainly knew Betty and all their children. I could not imagine raising a family of 8 children today let alone a few years ago. My fondest memories of Ray (and of course Betty) include family dinners with their own family and parts of the U of T football team (many pies for desert) and early morning hockey at Maple Gardens with the Toronto Police. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Feraday family.
Dan, my condolences to you and your family. I have good memories of friendly conversations with him whenever we met. He will be missed.
Dear Feraday Family, Wishing you all my heartfelt condolences in the loss of your amazing dad, grandfather, uncle, great grandfather and friend. Ray was truly larger than life! He possessed such an incredible passion for life and was such a role model for so many. I feel so blessed to have crossed paths with such an extraordinary man. I will cherish all those memories, always. May you all find comfort knowing that Ray touched so many lives with his bright beautiful spirit. Such a blessing!!! Thinking of you all with love!
A great man of integrity who's pride was his family and his police family. He was an inspiration to many people along life's journey and he was respected by every person he ever encountered. One of the finest gentlemen I have ever met. My condolences to the family. Rest in Peace Brother 761 from 180 - 55 Division.
It was with sadness that I heard of the passing of Mr. Ray Feraday. He truly was exceptional in so many ways. He clearly was devoted to his family, he set an amazing example of how to be a father and leader in the community. As his obituary reads, he was indeed a Renaissance Man. Mr. Feraday broke the mold of how you viewed a police officer in his day, he was ahead of his time. Active in sports, and fitness his whole life, and then excelling in writing poetry and singing was inspirational. He set a high standard of personal integrity and will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
The last of the fedora BCD. Ray and myself were partners at 52 Division in 84. Even with a big age difference we connected immediately. Both of us city boys and hockey guys. I recognized that Ray was a quality human being when I watched him around his family his first love. We played together at that Gardens broke bread and worked together. I still remember Ray (60s) a fitness nut going to weight room at 400am in tie and white shirt to pump iron when it was quiet in the dee office. Father Ray as he was known by some was a special guy and thanks to his son Dan for bringing him by my house in Port Hope a few times. Thanks Ray as I do when people like you leave regret no spending more time with you.
Our sincere condolences and best regards to David and the entire Feraday family. Jackie and Adrian
David & family, I was saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved father/father-in-law/grandfather, Raymond. The love and support of a father can never be replaced, but we hope you find some comfort & strength in the love of family and in the warm embrace of friends. With our heartfelt sympathy, Nella & Gaetano Cece ??
I was very saddened to hear of Ray Feraday’s passing. I first met Ray (a.k.a. Grandpa) while I was playing football with Dan and the Varsity Blues. We later connected at Maple Leaf Gardens for early morning hockey, Blues events and more recently breakfast get togethers. I so much appreciated his warmth, welcoming nature, discipline, wisdom, talents and sense of humour. Grandpa truly made a difference in people’s lives and will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out the entire family.
I could write for days…. So many great memories… great conversations. I had the extreme honour in receiving a poem on my retirement from Ray and to this day still have and read it with a smile . Many times at my shop he would drop by just to say hi….. He always had a story and we always had a laugh. We even connected another way …. He and my late Grandfather John Murray worked together on the Toronto Police Services. My thoughts are with the entire family …. A great man has left us. ❤️
It is with sadness that we receive the news of Ray Feraday's passing. Ray was such a remarkable man who touched so many people. I have always felt a strong connection due to our Varsity Blues connection with Dan (Ray was a great supporter) and through Metro Police where my father, John (Jack)?Howlett, worked along side Ray. My father greatly appreciated his colleague as being a great man of principle. What always struck me about Ray is how he always felt he could help people and lift them up through his support. And indeed he did. And he has left a legacy of great people in all his wonderful children. Thank you Ray for gracing this world with honour and integrity. You touched the lives of so many.

My sincere condolences and best regards and prayers to the entire Feraday family! I am truly privileged to have been mentored and coached by Dan on the field at U of T and in our chosen profession of policing. Mr. Feraday was a true leader and left a great legacy continued by his children. RIP !
I never had the honour to work directly with Ray however I did have the pleasure of meeting him through his son Dan. Ray was an exceptional, pleasant and remarkable person to be around. He always made you feel welcomed. He was friendly, affectionate and, without a doubt, admired by many. His love for sports, and in particular, hockey, was quiet evident however his loyalty and love for his family was greater. He will be missed. My condolences, prayers and thoughts go out to all members of the Feraday family.
I was saddened to hear of the passing of Ray Feraday. As a young constable I worked for Sgt. (Father) Feraday at 52 Div. Ray started out as my supervisor, but rapidly became a mentor, an ally and a trusted friend. Ray had a way of bringing out the best in his young officers and was always quick to praise their efforts. He truly was a supervisor who taught by example and stood with and by his men. Our friendship continued past both of our retirements and I will miss our visits and phone calls. Best of luck to all of the Feraday clan. Jim C
I write this note with fond remembrance for Sgt. Feraday. I remember him as a very giving and generous man, from my time at St. Michael's College School, where I was fortunate enough to play two sports with his son, Dan, Freshman Football in our Grade Nine year and on the Junior Varsity hockey team in our Grade Eleven year. Whenever we were playing, "on the road," Sgt. Feraday always made sure that we had rides to those games, and I was fortunate to ride with him on many occasions. He was always very encouraging and supportive of us as student athletes. From St. Mike's, the years went by, and one Sunday morning, at Mass, at St. Isaac Jogues church, in Pickering, I saw a familiar face. In the foyer, after Mass, I re-introduced myself to him, and to my amazement, Sgt. Ferady remembered me. When my mom was called to her eternal home, in 2013, Sgt. Feraday, with Dan, was there for me, by attending her funeral Mass and reception. Now, I offer prayers for his eternal soul, and condolences to the Feraday family.
Saddened to hear of the loss and passing of Detective Sargent Feraday. Always a class act and he has left a impressive legacy. My condolences to his family.
So many great memories of Mr. Feraday. Such an inspiration every time I talked with him. My favourite memory is playing hockey at Maple Leaf Gardens with Dan and Mr. Feraday for a few hours every Thursday morning. We were on the same line and it was fun to see his competitive edge after experiencing so much of his support. Our family's thoughts go out to the whole Feraday family.
An incredible man with an amazing personality and heart that always made you feel welcomed. I had the great privilege of sharing stories and laughs over breakfast many times. My condolences to the family, my prayers are with you.
A contagious smile and a great sense of humour! We had some great laughs over breakfast, while hearing stories of the glory days. Rest in peace <3 My condolences to family and friends.
Our sincere condolences to the Feraday family. Ray was an amazing, funny, and loving man. He will be missed. Sending love and hugs.
My sincere condolences to the Feraday Family. Ray, always a gentleman, would go out of his way to engage and support those who were fortunate enough to share time with him. He will be missed.
Ray was a great man and a great character. It was an honour and privilege to have known him. He will be missed.
On behalf of the Mccormack family we extend our deepest sympathies. All of us including our Dad Bill McCormack met and worked with Ray. Just a gentleman. Godspeed. Our prayers are with you.
I was heartbroken to hear of Ray’s passing. Ray told me of his fond memories of watching my father and Mike O’Sullivan (Shawn’s father) box at the West End YMCA. He said he jumped into the ring with Mike for a few punishing rounds only once. Ray was like a father figure to most young coppers at 52 Division including me. He taught me a lot. I cherish the time that Ray spent with me and will always cherish his memory. My condolences to the family. RIP Ray. Quintin

People have always spoke of Ray with such genuine love and respect. I spent a very small amount of time with him and even in that short moment I understood why. A true gentleman. My condolences to Dan and the rest of his very large family.
Deepest condolences to Dan and all the family. Ray was a wonderful man who my father always had great respect and admiration for. Ray was always a gentleman who helped many a young copper with sage advice. They truly don’t make them like him anymore. Rest easy Ray. God bless
Our sincere condolences to Dan and his entire family during this most difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
What a happy and enthusiastic man was Ray Feraday. I met him first as a boy. We played touch football in Dufferin Park. He was a few years older and he ran like the wind. Then as I entered high school, I joined St. Anthony's Young Men's Choir and was so pleased to run into him there again. Always a gentleman unless someone bit a fellow copper's ear off. My condolences to the family. Frank Napolis
My condolences to the family ?
So sorry to hear this sad news. I loved meeting your father and grandfather, Ray, he was always so pleasant to talk to and he clearly enjoyed life. He was a great poet and shared some of these one time when he was at the tennis court with Marie watching our matches. Always interested in other people. He enjoyed a wonderful long life and no doubt heaven's gates were opened wide for him.
Sending my deepest sympathy to the family Ray will be muchly missed. I'm glad I got one last kiss. I connected on a deeper level with Ray and am so glad I got the chance to get to know him and his family. Rays poetry was natural and came from the heart ❤️ I made a promise I would meet him on the otherside and I will keep that promise.
My condolences to the Feraday family. My thoughts are with you. God Bless.
Deepest condolences to Dan and to the entire Feraday family. Your Dad is special and will always be an inspiration to us all.
Although I never met Ray I feel that I knew the measure of the man by the quality of his children. His son, Dan, was very helpful in assisting my son as he applied to join Toronto Police some years ago. I met Dan through a mutual friend and listened to him talk about his parents and family, which he holds in very high regard. Ray must have been quite a Dad to have his sons admiration for him. Warmest thoughts and prayers at this time of remembrance and love. L
"You're my favourite" Condolences to your much loved family.
Heartfelt condolences to the Feraday family. My dad sang along side of him at St. Anthony's. I'll let Dad know. He was thrilled to hook up with Ray a few years back. Rest easy Mr. Feraday.
This truly genuine soul will be missed by all whose lives he touched and I feel very fortunate to have been one of many. Love you Uncle Ray. From one of your favourites ;) Love to all of the Feraday Family.
As an original and long time member of St. Anthony's Men's Choir, I can tell you that Ray was one of the most memorable and respected member of our choir. We always enjoyed Ray and Betty at our social gatherings. There are very few of us left, but I will advise them all of Ray's passing. My condolences to your family.
To all my Feraday cousins; I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Uncle Ray. He was truly one of a kind! He had a lust for life, a wicked sense of humor and he clearly lived his life to it's fullest! He left a lasting and positive impression on everyone he met. Our deepest condolences. Greg & Jenni Barratt
My personal condolences to my friend Dan and the entire family. I recall Ray as a thoughtful, kind and introspective man. Easy to like and respect in equal measure. Many of us were fortunate to know Ray because of his association with the Varsity Blues football program. He was a proud and devoted father to two of my teammates and stalwart fan of the rest of us. One specific occasion stands out in my memory. After a difficult road victory, we exited the dressing room and headed to the team bus lugging our large equipment bags. Ray was there to greet his two sons, but then quickly approached me wanting to carry my bag as a thanks for the protection I had provided for his son during the game. I was touched that he would even think of me. And that sums up his life...always thinking of others. It was my honour to have known him. May he Rest in Eternal Peace.
Condolences with your families loss. Wishing you and all your family strength. His family is his legacy. All my best. Ray
Our sincere condolences to the Feraday family. Your father/grandfather has left a great legacy. He will be greatly missed.
Our sincere condolences to all members of the greater Feraday clan. While Wanda and I have never met Ray personally, we are aware of his impressive legacy, and those he mentored and touched during his lifetime.
Expressing our sincere and heartfelt condolences from Joseph and Terry Runza
Clearly this remarkable man will be missed by his loved ones. May he rest in peace. I pray that God bless all of his loved ones with strength and grace to get through this part of the journey.
Ray was my platoon Sergeant when a small town boy started policing in Toronto (Metro). His help and patience with me launched a 36 year career in policing. Thank you Ray. Rest in peace you made a mark on many lives.
