Ruth Marion Doherty

April 19, 1938 - December 8, 2022

Ruth passed peacefully December 8, 2023 at Streamway Villa surrounded by the love of her family. Now that the weather has warmed the family would like to invite all those who knew and loved Ruth to a graveside service at Cobourg Union Cemetery Saturday, July 22, 2023 at 11:00 AM. Following the service friends and family are welcomed to the Columbus Community Centre, 232 Spencer St E, Cobourg, ON for a celebration of life from 12:00 – 2:00 PM. Ruth would want to ensure that everyone is comfortable so please feel welcomed to dress in casual attire.

It is with heavy hearts the family of Ruth Marion Doherty (nee: Lansley) announce her passing at Streamway Villa Thursday, December 8, 2022. Ruth was a strong-willed, hard-working woman who spent her life caring for others. In her final days she was able to pass peacefully surrounded in the love of her family who had the chance to give that care back to her. The family takes peace in knowing that Ruth has been reunited with her husband James Doherty who passed away March 31, 2005, as well as her beloved dog, Molly. Loved mother to Patsy (Emrys) March, David (Carolyn) Doherty, James (Andrea) Doherty, Kathy (Wayne Stanley) Doherty and Katrina (David) Burton. She will be missed dearly by her 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Beloved sister to Janet Inglis and Arthur (Linda) Lansley. Ruth was born in England in 1938 and immigrated to Canada with her family in 1951. Ruth and Jim were married in 1958 and together raised their 5 children in Cobourg. Between working to care for others and raising her children, Ruth somehow would find the time to do the things she enjoyed which included knitting, crocheting, gardening, and pickling. Even as her hobby of knitting and crocheting became more of a challenge as Ruth aged, her children and grandchildren could be sure to receive a sweater, blanket, pair of slippers, or dishcloths along with a jar of pickles during the holidays. The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude to the staff at Streamway Villa for their care, compassion, and comfort of Ruth. As per Ruth’s wishes, cremation has taken place and an interment will take place at Cobourg Union Cemetery in the Spring of 2023. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northumberland Humane Society.

As Patsy's husband I have had the priveledge of knowing Ruth for over 40 years. She was the middle generation of Lansley women that fled a war torn England. Ruth and the others epitomize that popular poster expression: "Carry On". She had more than her fair share of life troubles, yet was able to press forward serving others, bond to friends and care for her family. Her inner strength and spirit are already sorely missed.
