Richard Allan Hoffman

October 26, 1947 - December 4, 2022

Peacefully, with his wife of 50 years at his side, at the Toronto General Hospital on Sunday, December 4th, 2022, Rick Hoffman at 75 years of age. Rick was the son of the late Rita (Fortin) Hoffman and the late Elmer and Vera Hoffman of Pembroke Ontario. Cherished husband of Duane Anne Kensley Hoffman. Dear brother of Arlene Grosskleg (Barry). Brother-in-law of Louvain Kensley Good and Gil Kensley. Treasured uncle of Krista Caughey (Ian), Julie Yuke (Nathan), Trevor Good (Danielle), Murray Good, and great uncle of Meara, Molly, Ronin, Madison, Evelyn, and Cameron. Father to Pat DeKievit (Tina and their children Johnny and Amanda). Rick was a Big Brother to Larry for 47 years and Brad. They quickly became part of our extended family and brought us much love and joy. Rick was a role model and supporter of many including Ed Hulford and his son Bryston, Rob Crocker, Pattie, and Karen. Rick and Duane are Godparents to Greg Harris (son of life-long friends the late Heather and Ron Harris). He was a loving neighbour to Dan and Elaine Harp and their two enchanting children Sullivan and Ruby. Rick loved to hear their greetings “Hi Rick”, “Whatcha doing Rick?”, “Where ya going Rick?”. Childhood and life-long friend of Gerry Prince. He is also missed by his cat Jamie who was his constant buddy. Rick was a licensed funeral director for 50 years. He worked in Ottawa at Hulse Playfair Funeral Home, the Mackey Funeral Home in Lindsay, and for 30 years at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home in Cobourg and Colborne. He was a faithful member of St. Michael’s Church. Rick was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus for 50 years. He was a proud member of Colborne Rotary for 30 years and was named a Paul Harris Fellow for dedicated service. He was always active in the community being a volunteer at the Northumberland Hills Hospital for many years. Rick was the “Go-to” man. Whether it was work, organizations, colleagues, community members, family, or friends, everyone would run things by Rick for his help and support. Rick was always selflessly there for everyone. Visitation will be held at MacCoubrey Funeral Home, 30 King St. E. in Cobourg on Friday, December 9th, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm with Parish Prayers at 8:45 pm. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 10th at 1:30 pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church (Corner of University Ave and Division St. in Cobourg). Reception and Celebration to follow at the Columbus Community Centre on Spencer St. E. in Cobourg with tributes said at 3pm. Cremation to follow with later interment at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery in Campbell’s Bay Quebec. Duane would like to thank Dr. Meade and the nursing teams of the Constant Care Unit B5 of Peterborough Regional Hospital for their loving care over the 8 weeks of Rick’s hospitalization. Special grateful thanks to Dr. Jason Young Lee and his team at Toronto General Hospital. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to Big Brothers/Big Sisters Northumberland.

MESSAGES OF CONDOLENCE / DONATIONS

Michelle Feather - December 25, 2022

I loved working with Rick, he was no nonsense, hardworking, and such a joy to be around. I appreciated his wisdom and tutelage as a prospective, and then newly licensed funeral director. Rick was wonderful and positively integral part of my career. I cannot fully express my appreciation for him, I wish I could have articulated this to him. Thanks Rick, for everything you did and all that you were not aware you did.

Duane and family - Please know that you are in my thoughts at this time. As one of the many funeral directors Rick has mentored over the years, I am a better funeral director because of him. Although I drove him crazy at times, he was always there to help guide me with humility, kindness and the odd bit of frustration when I needed it. I carry the lessons I've learned from Rick with me and will always cherish the years spent working with Rick at MacCoubrey's. Rest easy dinosaur.

Londa Robinson - December 9, 2022

Duane, I'm sorry to hear about Richard. I regret not being able to spend more time with in my adult years, but circumstance and distance are unfair in that regard. I can tell you that some of the favourite memories of my youth are those of long summer days at the cottage in Otter Lake. Both you and Richard were always kind and treated me like family. I also remember that you both didn't hesitate to attend my High School graduation when I'm sure you could have been doing more relaxing things with your time. To anyone who would ask, I would describe Richard as a man of dignity and class. A true Gentleman. As Godfathers go, you couldn't ask for anyone better.

Dear Duane, where does one find the words to describe the depth of our sadness for your loss. We know Richard would not want us to dwell on his attributes, because of his quiet, giving and humble nature. However, we cannot be quiet about this wonderful man. He was our friend for well over 50 years. He was intelligent, generous , compassionate and kind. He was GOODNESS, an example for all of us to strive towards. We shared laughter in the good times and tears in the harder times of life. He was always there , someone you could trust and count on. We will always remember our friend with an unwavering respect and love. Love from us both, John & Sheila 💕🙏

Gerry Prince - December 7, 2022

The Lord giveth: I have been a friend of Rick's for 60+ years. Sixty years may seem like a long time to many people, but I can assure you that the years go by too quickly. Life took us in different directions, but the one thing that remained the same was staying in touch with each other Looking back over the years, many memories of Rick come to mind. To share a few: I remember... Rick trying to learn how to play the trumpet. He was exiled to the backyard. The noise he made caused the neighbourhood dogs to bark. He soon gave up this quest. I remember... going to John's Grocery at the end of the school day, sitting on overturn milk crates, having cokes and chips with Rick, Jeff, Art and just kibitzing. I remember... getting dressed as a funeral procession group for halloween with Rick, Buffer, Jeff, Art. Nancy. Winning the prize for best costume at the teen & twenty dance then appearing on the local late night television I remember... when Rick and I would come back to Pembroke to visit our families, getting together for a beer and catch up at the local Legion. He would drink Molson Golden Ale. ( a favourite brew of his Dad) I remember... when Rick was undertaking funeral studies, he would bring homework home.. a mannequin head that he and Sharpie would spend time applying make up on. I remember... going to his wedding in Campbells Bay. I remember... so many more memories with Rick. The Lord taketh away: I am glad I had Rick as a friend and I will always have our memories. It is with much sadness that I won't be able to attend Rick's funeral service. I know how hard today will be and I will be thinking of you and the whole family
