Mum passed away at home suddenly and serenely in the afternoon of Monday November 21, 2022 at 91 years old. She was not ill and did not suffer.
She was born in 1931 in what is now Pakistan, then spent her formative years in China including four years in the Weihsien internment camp before returning to England where she trained and worked as a midwife. She met Dad at a Canadian Air Force base in France in 1958. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married the same year. Mum and Dad moved to Canada and welcomed six boys. She lived almost 50 wonderful and peaceful years at Stillbrook, the family home, most of it in the garden.
Mum was devoted to her huge, adoring family: her husband of 63 years, Graham; her brother Peter (Jean); her sister Christine (Richard); sons Rick (Sylvia); Philip (Qian); Graham Jr. (Sylvie); Michael (Ruth); Andrew (Heather); and Will (Suzanne). Mum’s deep love for her 16 grandchildren can be seen in the many letters and books she wrote for them.
Her next greatest love was music. She played the piano her entire life and was the organist and music director at St. Mary’s Catholic Church for the past 45 years.
Mum was rooted in her faith and attended Mass daily. There was no issue too great that couldn’t be solved by a prayer to the appropriate saint. She enjoyed her ecumenical Bible study group that ran for almost forty years.
Mum had a lasting impact on a huge number of people through her life of service to others. She was a friend, volunteer, and confidante, counseling with wisdom from her many years of listening and contemplation.

Dr. Stratford and Family, Our deepest sympathy for your loss. Gay touched so many lives in so many ways. I had the privilege of getting to know Gay when I taught at St. Mary School. She was a talented musician and our paths crossed many times working with the School Choir. Her ability, quiet confidence, caring and gentle way instilled confidence in whomever she interacted with musically and otherwise. As a young teacher, I was truly grateful for this. Gay was a talented writer. I added her songs to my repertoire and taught “Go Forth” to many Choirs within our school board, spreading God’s message through Gay’s music. Thank you to Gay and her Family for her time and dedication as the choir leader and organist for so many years. May your treasured memories of Gay bring you comfort and healing at this time. Gay has ‘gone forth’ to her well deserved rest and place with God.
Rest in peace. I thank God to have been able to cross your path. You are an extroadinary person ! Warm prayers from Réunion Island. Betty and the Paquiry Family
Will, Suzanne and Family: Our sincere condolences on the passing of your Mom. She was a very special lady. Tanya and Dave

Graham and family. I’m so sorry of Gay’s passing. I will miss her on my weekly visits. Please accept my condolences. Shirley.
Dr. Stratford and family, we send our deepest sympathy at the passing of Mrs. Stratford. We did not know her well, but were honored to hear her play the organ so beautifully at church every weekend and hear her read the readings. My husband and I would also see her walking along Country Road 2 quite often. I had recently mentioned that I had heard your house had a wonderful double staircase and was invited to come for a visit and to see it. I wished I had done so and got to know her a little, she sounds like she was such an amazing person. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all. Sincerely, Mike and Mary Sawyer and family.

Gay was a remarkable woman, a beacon of light who enriched the lives of everyone who knew her. She was a woman of Faith. She had a gentle strength and a quick wit and our time spent together was always inspirational. She loved to write and we have kept and cherished every one of her poems ... none more than her beautiful "Advent" received the day before her passing. May God comfort Graham, the boys, and her whole family. May her memory live on in their hearts forever.

I’m so sorry to hear of your mum’s passing. Please know that I’m thinking of you at this difficult time. Gay was a loving and caring person to me as a young child. I’ll always remember her sweet smile.
To Dr. Graham and the entire Stratford family, we are shocked and saddened with the loss of Gay, certainly a loving wife, mother and friend to her faith community and to her many friends in the Grafton area. My mom often talked about the Bible study sessions hosted by Mrs Stratford at her home. She will be remembered for her long walks along Highway 2 between the village and Cherry Hill Road and her frequent stops to just say hello. She will be missed on Sunday mornings playing the Church organ at the 10 am mass. Thoughts and prayers to all of you.
Deepest condolences to Will and family. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
As long as we've been in Grafton the Stratfords have always been so kind and generous to our family. Just a couple of weeks ago as my mom, David and I drove by St. Mary's we saw Gaye and Graham in the parking lot. I drove up and rolled down the window. We received such a warm and loving greeting from this iconic couple, always there supporting our family, our church and our community. I will forever remember Gaye's music making the mass so rich week after week. And of course, my family has also been blessed to have the care of this amazing family of doctors. Our love and condolences to all of you from all of the Corcorans.
Wishing you peace to bring comfort, courage to face the days ahead, and loving memories to forever hold dear in your hearts. Peter and Christine

Dear Graham, How we will miss Gaye's beautiful smile and lovely conversation on walks through her dearly loved Grafton. She was a true inspiration to all she met. Know we are thinking of you at this sad time. Love, Joy and Doug Clark
To all the Stratford family. We were so sorry to hear of Gai's death. She and Graham had a remarkable marriage and achieved so much. Their personalities truly complimented each other, and they were always giving. We have so many happy memories of time spent at their old house in Cobourg and especially at "Stillbrook" in Grafton. There were dinners, conversation, music, a few winter walks to cut down Christmas trees, and one memorable occasion when the dogs knocked down the family tree and promptly ate Gai's home-made decorations. The house was full of fun and generosity. Gai always seemed an oasis of calm. She was really kind to Michael and I when we first arrived in Cobourg and also to our parents when they visited from Wales. I am sure you will all miss her greatly. Our lives, especially as we get older, seem defined by memories and Gai left some indelible ones of her faith, her intelligence, her humor and her kindness. Love to you all from Faith, Michael and the Jones and Brown families.
