It is with deep sadness the family of Dr. Derek John Bowerman announce his passing at the Northumberland Hills Hospital, Sunday, June 19, 2022, at the age of 93. Pre-deceased by his wife, Julie Bowerman (nee: Smith). He will be forever cherished by his children, Robin (Douglas), Giles (Nicola) and Roderick (Tisha). Loved grandfather to Lauren (Harley), Alice (Charlie), Lottie, Charlie, Harry and Owen. Proud great-grandfather to Freddie and Jack. Brother to his Sister Janet Fennell. Derek will be deeply missed by his extended family and his many friends. Derek practiced for over 40 years as an Ophthalmologist in Oshawa. For many of those years he shared a private practice with Dr. Barbara Craig. He was also a long time member of the Oshawa Golf and Curling Club. The family would like to extend their most sincere gratitude and thanks to Anita, N.P., as well as all the nursing, physiotherapy and occupational therapy staff that cared for Derek in both the Restorative and Palliative units at Northumberland Hills Hospital. Your kind, gentle and compassionate care did not go unnoticed. As per Derek’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. He will be laid to rest with his wife at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation.
Brings good memories. Derek was a mainstay of ophthalmology for many years in Oshawa and surroundings, always approachable, available and appreciated.
Sorry to hear the news of Dr. Bowerman my condolences to the family. I was a patient of Dr. Bowerman for many years right up to his retirement. He was a quiet man and took the time needed, never rushed. He always came out to call in his patients something you don't see now a days. A job well done. Very caring in his quiet way. RIP
Derek was very friendly to me when I was a student member at the Oshawa Golf Club and featured a bright grin and sharp teasing wit. Loved his dry sense of humour. Very proficient at his profession also. Could explain things in layman’s terms. Big loss for the community.
We remember with fondness your quiet kindness to us, especially the generous help to our father Ronald Howlett to access medical support for vision issues in England. Wonderful dinner parties and visits were fun and relaxed and your fine dry wit will be missed. Our monthly lunches after Julie passéd were always looked forward to. Thanks and love Julie and Derek.
Derek and Julie were my neighbors for many years. They were a lovely couple and my children enjoyed playing with their granddaughter when she came to visit. Our condolences to the family.

I'm so very sorry to hear this sad news. I have many fond memories of Derek and Julie and time spent with Robin at their home in Oshawa. My sincere condolences to Robin and Lauren and all of Derek's family.
Seeing this notice stirs my memory. I was an OR Nurse in Oshawa and knew Dr. Bowerman well - a good guy to work with and a good friend as the years went by. We kept in touch for some time after retirement but had lost that and I often thought of him as some of us still get together once in awhile. The group is getting smaller as the years go by.
