Clara Florence Chant

March 19, 1931 - June 5, 2022

Chant, Clara Florence (Mellis) - After a long life of 91 years, surrounded by her three
grandchildren, Clara died with grace on the evening of June 5, 2022, at the Village of Taunton Mills in Whitby, Ontario. Reunited at last with her daughter, the late S. Diane Prentice, who died nearly 20 years earlier. She will be deeply missed by the grandchildren she left behind and who loved her so profoundly: Chad Prentice (Bobbi), Kory and Stephen McGrath, and Leah Prentice (Alex). She will be forever remembered as “GG” to her great-grandchildren she so adored: Koen, Klara, Damian, Mars, Danielle, Jules, Cash, and Drew. Survived by her sisters Mary Field, Heather Mellis, and Evelyn "Kitty" Lipa; and brothers William Mellis and Murray (Gwenyth) Mellis. Sister also to the late Carol Doucette and Laura Hanna. Daughter of the late William Mellis and Mary MacLachlan-Mellis. Spouse of the late Lawrence Chant. Clara will be remembered by her many nieces, nephews and cousins. Clara lived her life with dignity and class, an open mind, and a kind spirit with a deep sense of knowing. She was strong and resilient, she was wise and witty. Clara retired from Bell Canada in 1994 and she made lasting friendships where she lived, worked and relaxed over the years in Cobourg, Hampton, Ottawa, Oshawa, Buckhorn Lake, British Columbia, and in Whitby. Gratitude is given for the excellent care she received at Taunton Mills. A private interment beside her daughter at the Heritage Cemetery of Saint Peter in Cobourg to take place soon. An intimate gathering to celebrate her life will be held in July and notices will be sent out.

Im very saddened to hear of the passing of Clara. She was my favourite Aunt on my mother’s family and I regret that her and my mother weren’t closer after she left Ottawa. I enjoyed our time together while she lived here. My thoughts are with the immediate family at this time. Best Wishes, Candace
