Peacefully at Extendicare in Cobourg on Friday, May 20th, 2022, at the age of 96 with her daughters by her side. Mary was predeceased by her loving parents Thomas Shanahan and Elizabeth Walsh and her siblings James Shanahan and Edward Shanahan. Mary is survived by her children and their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Heather Hebert (Robert Knox) and Heather’s children Jason Levine (Alena Vankova), Jennifer Levine (Jamie Pond); Joanne Hebert (late Donald McLeod), and their children Charlotte McLeod (Matt Cote), David McLeod (Jeanelle Dundas) and Ian Hebert (Deborah Mayne). Great grandmother of Nella and Benjamin Levine and Amelia Pond. Also missed by her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends in Montreal and Cobourg. After retirement Mary travelled extensively to Europe especially Ireland where she led trips to her favourite destinations. Mary was a strong believer in giving back to the community and was quite active in the Catholic Women’s League. After moving to Cobourg in her 80’s from Montreal she immediately became involved in the community of her new home Legion Village. Mary enjoyed knitting and in her later years, family members were the recipients of a personalized Christmas stocking. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday June 24th at 1:30 pm at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cobourg (corner of University and Division) with visitation at MacCoubrey Funeral Home (30 King St. E. in Cobourg) on Friday from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm. Cremation to follow. A reception will be held following the Mass at the MacCoubrey Funeral Home Reception Centre. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to a charity of choice, Extendicare Activities, Legion Village or Northumberland Hills Hospital. Dear Heather, Joanne and families, please accept our sincere condolences in the passing of your mother and grandmother. My mother was Bernadette Forster who also lived at the Legion Village and a very dear friend of your mom’s, before her passing in 2017. I had the pleasure when your mom was well and before my mom passed of driving your mom and my mom to church and various functions. Your mom was a very beautiful, kind lady and I enjoyed our conversations and car rides together. I was planning on attending the funeral today but due to sickness I am unable to attend. I wanted you to know that you are all in our thoughts, hearts and prayers during this sad and difficult time. Yours sincerely Cyndy and Rob Harper

Dear Heather & family I loved seeing your Mom every week at my salon she always was a no nonsense kind of gal and had the best stories of her childhood and her wonderful city of Montreal. Her love and pride for her grandson & grandaughter shone in her eyes as she told me of their accomplishments. She lived a wonderful, full life and now she’s with her maker. Please except my heartfelt condolences. Now it’s time to rest.
