With heavy hearts we announce that Matthew Holdstock passed away unexpectedly in Cobourg on Thursday, May 5th, 2022, at 43 years of age. Loving partner of Wendy Beales and cherished father of Soren Holdstock. Beloved son of Don Quesnel and Gillian Thibeault (Maurice) and adoring brother of Janine Grein (Markham) and Vanessa Quesnel. Matthew was a loyal friend who treated his loved ones as an extension of his family. Matthew shared his many gifts with those who knew him: his incredible cooking and baking, a sense of humour which rivalled a professional comedian’s, a capacious intellect which all his friends and family leaned upon for advice, constant creativity, the uncanny ability to master any skill, and an unparalleled gift with language which he shared with us all. He was an avid gamer and dedicated and loving partner and father, who is described by his son as loving, caring, selfless and the best daddy in the world. He was a man with a strong moral compass, who was uncompromising about protecting people who needed it, and who cared deeply for others. Matt will be truly missed.

Wendy and Soren, I was so sad to hear that Matthew passed away suddenly. He was an amazing person who did such amazing work with us at the BDC. He always went above and beyond to help and his efforts were noticed and appreciated regularly. We always loved having him join us on projects. He spoke of his son often and how much he enjoyed spending time with him. Family was his true North. Though it has been years since I last saw Matt, his memory is vivid in my mind. I spent a lot of time around him, especially in high school, as we shared the same circle of friends. Matt was always kind, funny, smart and quietly observant. He had a deep and natural empathy, an awareness of the wounds of other people, that felt rare for a young person. He often spoke of both of you and his life in Cobourg. One memorable conversation that always makes me smile was when he paused in the trampoline jumping with Soren to answer my phone call.
