It is with heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Vernon on Thursday January 27, 2022, at Hospice Peterborough, after a long battle with several medical challenges. He was the cherished son of the late Vernon and Rose (Williams) Murphy. The loving brother of Joanne (late Brian), John (Mary) and Patricia (Matthew). Predeceased by his brothers Harry (the late Lynne), Bryan, Robert and his sister Marie (Ron). Cherished uncle of Christine (Rob), Craig (Jaime), Paul (Julie), Lisa (Trevor), Jeff (Anya), Kate (Jose), David (Christine), Patrick, Ken, Catharine, Marika (Chris) and Luke. He will be lovingly remembered by his many great nieces and nephews. Vernon served as custodian in several lakeshore schools including St. Anthony’s Catholic Elementary, St. Stephen’s and St. Mary’s Catholic Secondary Schools. A service and internment will take place in the future when COVID restrictions are lessened. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Hospice Peterborough. Their loving, professional care filled Vern’s final days with comfort, laughter, and friendship. Donations in memory of Vernon may be made to Hospice Peterborough.
I am so sorry to hear of this news. Vern worked as a custodian and tended to my messy classroom at St. Stephen's for a few years, always with a smile on his face and fun anecdote. My condolences go to Vern's family and friends at this time.
Had the pleasure of working with Vern at St. Mary's Cobourg. He was so pleasant and such a joy to work with. He always found something for us all to laugh about. He was a caring man and I treasure the times we worked together. RIP old friend.
I was very sad to hear the news of Vern’s passing. He was the custodian in my wing at SMSS and was a very thoughtful and interesting man to chat with. He was a collector and we would talk about some of the vintage collectables he found at the thrift shops in town. A kind and gentle soul with a great sense of humour. RIP Vern. You will be missed!
One day after school Vern came to ask me about a bike he had seen abandoned for several days in the school bike rack. As many of you know, Vern was and "avid collector" of many things and I assumed it was for another one of his many ongoing projects. After asking around I discovered the bike had been left behind by a young girl when the back wheel lost a few spokes and became warped and the bike unrideable. I let Vern know and noticed that the bike had been been taken away that night. Two days later he returned the bike to me with a new back wheel and asked if I would just let the young girl know that her bike was fixed and that she could ride it again. I'm sure that many of you have similar stories of Vern's immense generosity of spirit and his heart of gold. He will be missed by many of us in the schools in which he worked. Our condolences go out to his family and friends.
