Brother-in-law to Doreen and Gerald Harry of Kingston and Uncle to many nieces and nephews with whom he shared a special bond. Lifelong friend to James D. Jones. Joan and family, I am so sorry to read about Ross. He was a man of another generation and had all of the qualities that people aspire to. Ross always had a quick and wonderful smile when you met. He had all the time in the world to listen and chat. I likened him to the way it used to be in any small town. Ross will be missed by many, but remembered forever for his generous spirit. You have my sympathy and I will be remembering Ross for a long time. Take care and know how much he was loved by so many and the lives he did change.
Ross was a wonderful, kind-hearted soul whose youthful exuberance and engaging smile always brightened any encounter we had with him and his family. We recall Christmas drop-in gatherings and, on one occasion, I caught a glimpse of what a precocious kid he must have been as he described how he had traded and negotiated with his schoolmates to collect the entire series of Bee Hive Corn Syrup Original Six Hockey Photos. His dedication to carrying on beloved traditions may have it's genesis in the school yard. A good man has gone and we will miss seeing him just around the corner.

Joan and family, I’ve struggled to find the right words that honour Ross appropriately. I keep coming back to the Maya Angelou quote - “ I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. Much love to you all.
The little train and Christmas scene in the store window always heralded the holiday season. It must have taken many hours to set up. Cobourg has lost someone special. My thought and prayers are for you the at this time.

Joan & family My sincerest sympathies to you all as well as Roy, Marg and families. You have lost a treasure. Hold tight to your memories as you find your way through these sad times
My deepest condolences to Joan and the Quigley family. When we moved to Cobourg in the early 50s, Ross became one of the first friends of my brother, Murray, so I’ve known him since I was three years old. Even as a boy, he was vibrant, kind and enthusiastic, a joy to know. I treasure the conversation Ross and I had when I phoned him to arrange to give some trophies of Murray’s to the Cobourg Hall of Fame. His reminiscences were filled with kindness and humour. He was a remarkable person and I hope that knowing how well-loved he was by everyone whose life he touched will bring his family some comfort at this dark time.
Dear Denise and Rory, So sorry to hear about your father’s passing. You have my deepest sympathies. Donna Matthews
We are so sorry to hear about the passing of Ross. An amazing man who always made you feel special in any interaction whether at the Hardware Store, YMCA or on the sports field. It feels like I've known Ross forever. He was such a real fixture in the community in so many ways, but I'm not sure when I first met him. He was always such a class act in every way and made me feel important every time we interacted. Anna worked with him at the YMCA and would always talk about what a gentleman he was to her. Condolences to the family. Ross has left his mark on our town and will be missed by many.

So sorry to learn of Ross’s passing. My sincere condolences to Joan and family. Fond memories of playing in the church hockey league as kids, and later as fastball teammates. I remember Ross being an outstanding athlete whose skills were only outshone by his personality. Rest In Peace, Quig.

We are so sorry for your loss Joan and family, it is also a great loss for the town of Cobourg. Ross was a unique businessman. He hired locals and student staff, treating them like family and creating a workplace where they loved their time in the hardware store. You were drawn into the store, even if you did not need anything. It was such a pleasure to be greeted by Ross with his ever present smile, having a lovely chat where he was more interested in your life and of course a laugh or two. Ross will be missed by all, he truly loved Cobourg and did so much for all who lived here. Ross is the unofficial Mayor of Cobourg. Our sincere condolences.
Joan, Amy, Rory and families: such sad news to hear of Ross's passing. Our deepest sympathy at this sad time. We know he is dancing with the angels now.

We were so sorry to hear of Ross's passing. So many wonderful comments from everyone who was lucky enough to know him, and all true. What a lovely man he was and he will be greatly missed. A sad loss for you all and for this town.
It's with sadness on hearing of Ross passing. A nicer man would be difficult to find. He was the man that hired me at Lakefront Utility and as much as he was debating about me I was wondering about the type of boss he would be. As I found out he was one of the nicest bosses I've ever known. A gentle soul with a fun sense of humour, a warm smile and above average intelligence. He was a kind, friendly man. He was someone I was fortunate to have known and worked for. I send my sincerest condolences to his family. Cobourg has lost a fine citizen. He will be missed by many. May he rest in Peace.
Thinking of all of you and your loss. Ross will be greatly missed, he touched many lives. Les, Kerrie Travis, Connor and Judy Brill

I first met Ross shortly after moving to the area in the early 90s - one of the first retailers I met - and from his, along with Joan's friendliness @ Quigleys, I knew I had chosen the right community for my retirement. I didn't know Ross well but our paths did cross frequently during our recent work for Ed's House. I was always greeted by Ross with a wonderful friendly grin and warm conversation. Ross has made a tremendous contribution to his community - as more than evidenced by all the tributes to him on this site. The community will truly miss him but his family especially so. May the knowledge that he has left a fabulous legacy and lived an extremely full and worthwhile life bring his family some consolation during such difficult times. My thoughts and sincere sympathies are will all of you.

On behalf of the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame, and myself personally, I would like to extend deepest sympathies to Joan and the family. A big loss for family, friends and the Cobourg community. People like Ross don't come along all that often. I met Ross a number of years ago when he came to the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame to gather information in order to start a Sports Hall of Fame in Cobourg. He was enthusiastic and excited about the possibility of having a Sports Hall of Fame in Cobourg. He always believed that it was possible. His enthusiasm rubbed off on us and we also wanted this to happen for him and for Cobourg. He lived to see it happen. While he always gave credit to others, I told him during a phone call a few weeks ago, that this would be his legacy. Ross Quigley was a genuine, nice human being and he will be missed. Thinking about his family at this very sad time.
Our deepest sympathy to you Joan and your family. Ross will truly be missed by all.

Joan, Rory and Amy and families, We offer our heartfelt sympathy to you in the loss of Ross. Our friendship with Ross goes back many years through high school and later as a neighbour. He was always a kind and supportive friend with an unfailing cheerful disposition. For many years, he and my father attended hunt camp together. I’m not sure how much hunting was done but they sure had lots of laughs and there were many tall tales that came out of those get togethers. As well, Ross and my father had the hardware business in common. We are thinking of you all at this sad time. Doug and Ann Closs

Joan, Amy and Rory Over the past decades, there are a few notables that Cobourg residents remember as being special folks who were significant contributors to their community in so many ways. Ross is one of these people. Beginning with his youthful and outstanding play as a Cobourg Cougar to his more recent founding of the Cobourg & District Sports Hall of Fame, Ross has been an icon within the local sporting community for over 60 years. … and he was so much more! A loving husband, father and successful business man who constantly gave back to his community in so many ways. I never heard Ross speake ill of a single person. On the contrary, he was always upbeat, positive and very much the perfect, gentle soul. Although Ross will be sorely missed, he has left us a legacy of wonderful memories. I’m privileged to have known him. Ron Swallow

To Joan and Family, We send our most sincere condolences. Vivid recollections from Ross’s hunting and fishing expeditions with our fathers are cherished memories. Late night hockey games at the old arena were part of a childhood well lived. Ownership of the hardware store was a further connection. Ross’s kindness and lovely smile will be greatly missed. I have had the privilege, like so many others, of knowing Ross through the last 5 decades, whether it was his friendly assistance for hardware supplies, help with sporting equipment, or just a chat on the street. In the fall of 2020 I got to confirm everything I knew about Ross while sitting down with him during a couple of 89.7 Legacies interviews. His humility, his pride in his community, the love he had for all sports, and most of all his love of family all flowed out during those interviews. I am so honoured to have known Ross and know that his memory will live long in our hearts. He will truly be missed.
Dear Joan & family.Steve & I send our deepest condolences.Thinking of you at this difficult time.JB

Joan, Rory, Amy and family. May the special memories of Ross bring you some comfort during this time. He truly was a person that had the biggest, kindest heart. When I think of Ross I think of you Joan. The two of you truly embraced each other and have always held a special spot in my heart.
Dear Joan, Rory, Amy and his adorable grandkids who he spoke of often and loved so dearly, Ross was such an ambassador for Cobourg. As a newcomer to the community many years ago he was the oh so friendly face at the local hardware store on King who I always looked forward to chatting with. I had the privilege of working with Ross many years later and became one of his ‘hey kiddos’. Ross had the ability to make everyone he knew in his life feel so special. Love and hugs to the family during this difficult time.
I was shocked and saddened to read of Rosses passing. I knew Ross from the 50s when he played softball for a Cobourg team that played in the Peterborough Mens City Softball league. Ross was a pleasant guy. We were reaccqainted later around 2012 when he visited the Peterborough & District Sports Hall of Fame. My sincere condolences to Rosses family. I'm sure his pleasant disposition and personality will be missed by all.
Joan,Rory,Amy and families. We are so sorry for your loss. Ross was a man who exemplified integrity, humor and caring for everyone that he met. He touched so many lives as a person, player, coach and employer. He made everyone feel at ease and everyone around him smile. Perhaps because he was always smiling. Our thoughts are with you. To the entire Quigley family, please accept my deepest condolences on Ross' passing. For a fair number of years now I would stop into the Hall Camp to see the guys. I thoroughly enjoy the visits. As I get to know each of the guys a bit better each year, I will remember Ross. I will cherish the visits I had with Ross at the hunting camp. He was always genuinely interested to listen to my stories and proudly shared his stories with me. Like I was one of the guys. I will continue the camp visits but will miss seeing Ross. He was a class act. God speed my friend.
Our deepest sympathy Joan and family. I will always have fond memories of our years at Beaudries hunt camp with Wallace and Annie.Ross and his good friend Ernie Outwin would entertain us in the evenings, reminicing about their time at the Ont. hospital.we all laughed til our sides were sore. I first met Ross way back when we were involved with the Santa Clause Parade and I was still at Winchester and then again through the Legion's youth sports program. To say one of Ross's things was to make life long friends is so true. After all these years, when ever we crossed paths, he always had a smile and a warm greeting even on the golf course. We have all lost a little bit with his passing. I know I have. My thoughts and prayers are with Joan and the family. Rest in peace my friend. (From Bobbie)

Joan and Family, It was with great sadness that Maureen and I learned of Ross's passing. He was an all round good guy and one of Cobourg Rotary's finest and funniest Past Presidents, teaching a lot to those of us who followed him. He was also Rotary's final Hockey Captain, no one could follow him! Always good to talk to, he will be missed by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Please accept our sincere condolences. Malcolm and Maureen Blackburn
Dear Joan, Rory, Amy and families, please accept my heartfelt condolences. Ross was such a special man who truly made Cobourg a better place to live. He touched many aspects of our community and dedicated his life to it. His passion for the Cobourg Sports Hall of Fame was contagious and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him. He will be forever missed.
Sorry to hear of a wonderful man passing. When I would see him I would call him Grandpa even though he was only a few years older than me. We would always laugh . Such a sad loss for our family AND the community. RIP my friend.
I got to know Ross through the Day of Caring as we were both on the committee. I looked forward to our site visits each year…riding around with Ross from location to location. Always a story to share, a wave and hello to everyone he knew (which was pretty much everyone) and a lot of laughs along the way. The sparkle in his eye when he spoke of Joan or the pride in his voice when speaking of his children and grandchildren…it was easy to see the dedicated family man he was. A true community oriented person if there ever was one. He loved his town and it showed. His town loved him. RIP Ross…you will be greatly missed❤️
Joan, Rory, Amy and families. So sorry to hear of Ross's passing. I'll always remember the countless hours he put into our softball and hockey, as kids. The Town of Cobourg has lost it's # 1 fan.

Sorry to hear about Ross, always loved going to the hardware store and he would greet me as, hey big guy what can I get ya, every time, and on the street it was hey big guy, RIP Ross
Joan, Rory, Amy - and families - A painful time for you, and for the many friends Ross made - and kept - throughout the years. As I absorb the news, flashes of memories come back, from high school days on. For years, whenever I came home to see my parents, I always managed to go to the hardware store: in part to get something needed, but perhaps more to get that final sense of being "home". The warmth of the greetings from Ross and Joan, the kindness and assistance - was always part of being back in the home town we all loved. Memories of Ross are all good.
I know Ross he is a Man that will be mist by a lot of us he is the one that put up hockey displays in the cobourg arena and many widow train displays at this time of year. I know his Mom Effie from her teen years as she and sister went to Colborne High and came to my Moms to get hair done good mems.
Joan, Rory, Amy and families our thoughts are with you on the loss of such a wonderful husband, father and Poppa. Our 60 plus years of friendship has given us many great memories of good times together. Knowing him has made our lives richer and we will cherish those memories forever.

Ross has left such a legacy of love and pride in both his family and the community. I will think of him often, he has showed me how one person can make such a difference. How fitting that both he and his family were wrapped in love and care. He completed a full circle by being in a home he helped build.
